Here is something even more pedantic..Territorial waters extend for about 22 km from the shore line of each country.. So given that the Baltic is wider than 44 km, Poland and Denmark (or Sweden) don't technically have a common border since there are separated by international waters..

Isn't the territorial limit extended to 200nm these days?

(okay, I googled it, and I'm none the wiser... it seems that territorial waters still stick to the 12nm limit, but there's such a thing as exclusive economic zones which extend to 200nm. So - do they have a border or not?)

Yes, but only in open oceans, as far as I know. You can't do that in the Baltic Sea or the Black Sea for example, or you would automatically end up with border disputes.

Oops! Of course I actually meant to say that Poland has two entirely separate borders with the Czech Republic, or Slovakia, or perhaps with both of those two states.

Just another colonial here, but, when we read the title "British - Stupidest nation in Europe".... Is "British" the nation or is "Britain" the nation?

It is due to British education system. Your law allows Brit youth leave school at 16. Most European nations` requirement, including Poland, is 19.

3 years of schooling at this age is a substantial difference.

That is why Polish emigrants come to Great Britain to aid it with their knowledge.

I am just from the colonies- I don't know. I am also confused by a person being called a Britain- I have heard it used when talking about a group- for example, a group of britains --maybe I am wrong on that.

My Nana just used to say she was English- so much easier.

The publication the article comes from is a bit of a 'rag', so why worry what it says. The British education system is in need of an overhaul, standards have fallen rapidly over the last twenty years. Hopefully this may be rectified? Poland's education system is no better though and there is the problem of 'cheating' and being able to buy qualifications. As nations we should be looking at countries like Japan for some ideas.Whatever the levels of education a nation has there will always be people that have no interest in learning or retaining knowledge. I know British people who don't know who Nelson was but I also know Poles who don't know who Skłodowska was either! Nations aren't stupid but people can be.

IN Poland you have to stay at school for an extra three years to hone your rote learning and cheating skills.

Copernicus ,Curie-Skłodowska ,Arctowski ,Heweliusz and Funk are all Poles who I admire for obvious reasons, people who's achievements I would dearly love to emulate but never will! However the list of British scientists who achieved great things is far longer! There are far longer lists of notable British engineers, writers, historians, warriors, sports men, composers, artists too!!!!


Yes like the woman who insisted that she had a 'degree in psychology' but did not know who Pavlov, Freud or Jung were ( or Eysenck ).

The woman who insisted she had a 'degree in chemistry' but didn't know what 'tytan' or 'rubid' was.
The man with the 'electrical engineering degree' but couldn't explain why copper conducts electricity in Polish or English.
Obviously there are Poles who have a good education, fairly awarded degrees etc... but come to Shropshire and Powys and you'll find lots of Polish people with qualifications that don't seem to teach them the most basic facts of their supposed subject.

Speak for yourself, but the Scottish system is doing well and has just been further decentralised and control put back in the hands of the teachers. You're referring to the English system there ;)


The Polish system is improving rapidly at school level, but there's still the culture issue of cheating being acceptable. I absolutely tore apart one of my classes one day after catching some of them cheating - they now know that trying to cheat results in a major telling off, being sent to the director AND their parents being told as soon as I see them. For some reason, they don't cheat ;)

As for buying qualifications - if you're in Poland, you know what the difference is. Someone turning up with part time studies in English from a private university will always be known for having bought it.

You know the score as you're in Poland but in the UK it's a problem when people claim 'real' science and engineering degrees, it's dangerous in the workplace!
