But your small enterpreneurs take advantages of that fact. In 2004-2007 seemingly there was too little ppl to work in unskilled jobs so Polish influx helped the UK economy. In crisis the influx stopped but still, small rate of wages which Easter European were willing to take, certainly helped some of them to survive.
It encouraged businesses to pay rubbish pay (you think they set up agencies in Poland because I wanted to do Poles a favour?), Poles dont have the same outgoing, 5 Poles sharing a 1 bed flat dont have the same outgoings as 1 Brit living in similar property..Hence the reason they aford to take those "small rates of pay" plus let's face it, it was better than they got at home! Hence the reason they came to the UK and swamped the job market (you know the laws of supply and demand dont you?). But, I will say this, not all Poles are taking small rates of pay, a friend of my pulls about £35-40K a year (with over-time) and one of the engineers at work is Polish..She wont be working for "small rates" either..
In Poland we have similar situation in agriculture sector where not too many ethnic Poles want to work for so little money. The farmer can't pay better wages because it would make their business unprofitable so they hire Ukrainians, and everybody is happy.
You dont get it do you? Things dont improve if you constantly have a supply of cheap and willing labour, how can standards be improved? The wages in the UK have decreased in the last 5 years due the country being overpulated and there being fewer jobs..Companies are in a position they know there will be 200 candidates for one job...Im all for being competitive, but we have to draw the line somewhere...
