To sum up - a TVP journalist was reporting on the monthly Smolensk marches when some bitter and twisted individuals started attacking him without any reason whatsoever. This certainly sums up the attitude by government supporters, where they're willing to indulge in violence towards anyone that they don't approve of. It certainly reminds one of the attitude in Russia towards independent journalists, where violence is common towards anyone that doesn't present the approved Government point of view.

Notice how the usual suspects have very little to say about the violence here towards a credentialed reporter.

So then, what should we do as Poles, citizens of Poland and foreigners to commemorate this dreadful event every month?

Personally I think that marches are not enough. I think full military parades, the whole feckin hog baby. The army, the navy, the secret service, the mountain rescue teams, cops, straz, and puppies in military clothes. Parades like this every month. Priests and alter boys too, you can never have enough priests. Nuns can feck off though, nuns are feckin weird.

Maybe also we should crash a new plane every month and every month we'll draw lots in the Sejm and whoever gets the shortest one will have to pilot the plane. But y'know to be nice, Chairman Jarek should be first.

Oh we need the mohair berets involved too......hmmm.....let me see, maybe they can help with dual roles, firstly they could stand around stinking of wee wee and singing mad songs and they could also organise bake sales, y'know, if we're gonna crash a plane every month we've gonna need dinero and through the sale of their lovely cakes and buns Poland will easily be able to afford it.

What suggestions my good friends and frenemies of Polish forums, how can we help PiS in their propaganda war?

You know how Ireland has the Angelus at 6.00? Well, every morning at 8.41, we could play patriotic clips and the national anthem along with pictures of Lech Kaczyński, and make it obligatory viewing in classrooms, in prisons and other places. Most classrooms have TV's, so this shouldn't be a problem!

Nah, they're not allowed, they've got separatist tendencies and the Dear Leader Chairman Kaczyński will not tolerate that. And they speak funny, so we definitely can't have that.

I reckon though, we need masks. Lots of masks. Everyone should have to wear one (a Lech one) on the 10th of each month until Justice Has Been Done. Lech beer also cannot be sold on the 10th of each month to avoid any sort of jokes.

What about putting some of the opposition supporters in a big cage outside the Presidential Palace and abusing them, like with the Romans and the people they fed to lions? There's that "Two Minutes Hate" in 1984, so this could be the PiS version..whaddya think?

And midday too Delph. How well I remember in school, the intercom crackled into life and we were all on our feet in an instant with deafening scraping of chairs and tables. It also involved genuflecting, thirty five of us in limited space. Ah happy days.......

I must say monthly commemorations sounds a bit over the top. Are they actually proposing that? Surely some low key annual event such as a commemorative mass (attendance optional) in each major town's cathedral would be sufficient.

Merged: At long last - a Smolensk memorial outside Presidential Palace

A memorial to the late Preisdent Lech Kaczyński and 95 other Poles who died in the 2010 air disaster in Smolensk, Russia will be built in front fo Warsaw's Presidential Palace. Such plans had been hotly opposed by the former government led by the Civic Platform party which had wanted it erecetd in some out-of-the-way corner. "There will be a monument dedicated to those who died in the crash, it will be a monument to President Lech Kaczyński," Kacvzyński's twin brother and former prime minister 'Jarosław announced at a memorial gathering at the site. "Such was the will of (the current Polish president (Andrzej Duda)," he added.

Listeners of Radio Maryja behave the same, and now PiS government treats it like a credible Catholic radio station. Hint: it doesn't promote catholic values.

A monument to those who died I can understand, but a monument to that embarrassing lousy president? The will of the president is right, but who is the president?

Lousy, undoubtedly yes, but as a president who died in office some sort of monument is to be expected. A monthly thing is just bizarre and what they actually want is a regular public gathering of their hardcore supporters.

What's also to be expected is that the moherowe berety will be having rallies in front of it. Nothing that Jaro/Macierewicz do is straightforward - they know they won't be in office for long and are using the Smolensk crash now so they've got something to use later.

It ****** me off to no end that Poland worships losers so much. For every monument to a successful person, a man or woman who accomplished amazing things - there's ten to those who died violently. The result is that Poles are not taught what it takes to win, and not taught self preservation. The most praised wars and heroes should be those which succeeded. Currently it's the opposite.

A plaque or memorial to Lech Kaczyński and those that died in the crash is one thing. Burying Lech Kaczyński at Wawel Castle is outrageous. Wawel is the castle of Polish kings, and people who made Poland great. No matter how you slice it you can't say Lech Kaczyński made Poland great. Kazimierz Wielki (Casimir the Great) had flaws - for example he was a cynical womanizer. But he had tons of accomplishments. Mickiewicz cheated on his wife, driving her insane - but he was a great poet.

We know the flaws of Lech Kaczyński. What are his great accomplishments ?

None, absolutely none at all. Just chaos and a deterioration in public life.

Most European patriotism is built around failure (massacres, failed uprisings, fallen heroes who made terrible mistakes etc etc etc).


He gave his brother an insurmountable guilt complex for planning the whole mess in the first place?

Endangering the Republic by having all the heads of military on one plane? (seriously that was a serious breach of basic security, the military survived but there's no excuse for such terrible sloppy planning).

Apparently burying Lech Kaczyński at Wawel Castle wasn't enough. In new resolution, the senate is celebrating the 10th anniversary of his swearing-in.

Now you have set yourself up as someone authorised to decide what the Senate may and may not celebrate. Who the hell do you think you are?

It's quite morbid really - and holding a parade with military etc every month - unbelievable.

What's the difference between marching around with pictures of Lenin and marching around with pictures of Lech?

Seems to me as if PiS are using exactly the same tactics as the Communists used.

I live in Poland and have always paid taxes. Sejm and Senat are supposed to represent people like me. I pay their wages. I think they're wasting time and money celebrating a mediocre president. There are much more important things to take care of.

They're trying to start a personality cult.

Kaczyński didn't commit a genocide? I'm against monthly parades though. Not a single casualty of that tragic event was anywhere close to becoming a National Hero and shouldn't be honoured as one.

What's the difference betwee pulling people into he streets and handing them "Students to their studies" and "Zionists to Israel" placards (1968) and doing the same thing with pro-Kod and anti-PiS placards (2015). Both are rabble-rousing circuses serving the selfish goals of one poltical camp.

Merged: Smolensk - The movie!

Now, a couple of days ago I saw the cinema trailer for this epic..... aka Smolensk.

I have just returned from the village quack, after an operation to have my lips sewn together.........

For I intend to go and see this show , and it was suggested to me that bursting out laughing at the development of the premise of the film would be inappropriate given the circumstances.

Thus the undertaking to keep said lips buttoned together.

Having said that, the nation needs to brace itself for the next round of public incredulity at the latest bout of Polish self-loathing. Likely to be seen as disgusting stuff, and totally disrespectful to the victims (though I will sit through it and weigh up the facts portrayed, just as Mary Whitehouse failed to so do with "Deep Throat")

Any others suckers going to throw their hard-earned at another of Krause's "masterpieces of cinema"?

They should be commemorated within reason at the appropriate times and places.

I perceive no reason to do so at a commemoration of a completely unrelated event. What does Poznan 56 have to do with Smolensk?

Would you want the victims of the Kielce progrom commemorated at an event devoted to the Warsaw uprising?

Well, if he did that really, he must certainly have some mental issues, I can see no other reason for that. Beata Szydło promised in her electoral campaign that Macierewicz wouldn't be taken to her government as a minister. That promise wasn't kept, however ...

Smolensk was the greatest civilian air tragedy since WW2, claiming the lives of senior government and military officials including Poland's First Couple.

No it wasn't - there have been many much bigger air accidents, including a couple in Poland.

There is no reason to link that accident in Smolensk to the Poznan commemoration.
