CLEVELAND - Only the forehead, upper eyelids, lower lip, lower teeth and jaw are hers.

In a 23-hour operation, transplant surgeons have given nearly an entire new face to a woman with facial damage so severe that she could not eat on her own or breathe without a hole in her windpipe, doctors at the Cleveland Clinic said here on Wednesday.

The highly experimental procedure, performed within the last two weeks, was the world's fourth partial face transplant, the country's first, and the most extensive and complicated such operation to date. Dr. Maria Siemionow led the surgical team, which took turns at the operating table so the doctors could rest, sleep and share expertise.

Merged: Surgeons in Poland perform first life-saving face transplant

Good news for somebody!

Doctors in Poland say they have performed a total face transplant on a 33-year-old man whose face was torn off in an accident with stone-cutting machinery. Surgeons at the Oncology Center in Gliwice said the 27-hour operation was performed on May 15, just weeks after the accident. The head of the team of doctors, Adam Maciejewski, said it was the world's first life-saving face transplant carried out so soon after the damage.
The accident took place on April 23. Previous transplants have taken months or years to prepare.

Interesting- Polish media report the same thing.

It's good the ministry agreed to transport dead body in the helicopter- there is law against it but someone in the ministry used their head.

Interesting- Polish media report the same thing.

I think they mean 'the first done so soon after the injury occurred', as opposed to 'the first ever'.

someone in the ministry used their head.

A rather nice choice of words there Lenka.

The article mentions it's not the first face transplant. Apparently it's the first to be carried out so soon afterwards. Usually it takes months or years of preparation instead of weeks as in this case. Oops too late, Harry spotted it first!

This is what I was hoping the OP would see and change the title of his thread. It wasn't really a first was it?
