If you have Polish roots, if you feel Polish, if you have Polish loyalties, then you are Polish, whether you speak perfect contemporary Polish or not, whether you are a Polish resident or not. They don't understand that.

You will come to Poland, and you may be cheated and framed by Poles, you being naive in the new strange environment, but those thugs and thieves will take your Polishness without giving it a second thought, and they will exploit it. Family, you know. That's the worst case scenario. On average, the Nation will embrace you.

BTW, what you call an ethnicity, in Poland is a nation. Americans twisted the good old meaning of the word to create something meaningful out of a formless mix of national splinters. There are only a few Poles here in these forums, so don't get confused.

The main reason is from WWII, more specifically from the Charge of Krojanty which occurred on the first day of the German invasion of Poland, in which Polish Calvary (which made up about 10% of their military personnel at the time) attacked a battalion of Wehrmacht infantry, and were fired upon by German Armored troop transports. The remains of dead horses and cavalryman caused reporters who went to the battlefield shortly after to conclude that the Polish Calvary charged German tanks, and the Nazi's took advantage of the reports for use as propaganda.
