Travel / Ryanair travel by air - subtle scams to be wary of [98]

Ryanair is value for money.
I travel 3-5 times a year with Ryanair Manchester to Rzeszow or Kracow depending on availability.
I dont want pampering on a short flight, dont need to eat or a pillow and blankets.
If I'm nice to the cabin crew they are nice in return.
Booked again for march and at £36.00 return including all charges, all I'm hoping for is someone nice to talk to.... :0)

Genealogy / Looking for Glowniak family from Oleśnica Poland. [12]

Assuming your grandfather was Roman Catholic, the church could hold records of interest (to both of us). Olesnica was part of the Stopnica deaconate in the diocese of Kielce.

My Farther was also born in Olesnica, and indeed parish records were destroyed in the war. However I was able to obtain a copy of his birth cetificate from the archives kept in Stopnica town hall.

There was a small charge of 6zl per copy and I needed proof of kinship and a valid reason for obtaining these. The whole process didnt take a hour but I was there in person.

Law / Registration procedure of a new vehicle in Poland - I have 1 year flat contract and meldunek, is it enough? [7]

Is it enough for register this car in Poland

NO... I had just bought a house in Poland that took almost 18 months, even though both parents are Polish.
So I bought a car with Polish registration from a Polish man in England and drove the thing back to Poland thinking I would save myself the problem when I'm there................. Not quite so.

First came the Insurance, I could insure my home no problem, but the car can't do it without a Nip ( Poland's equivalence to a British national insurance number).

Then spent a day paying the taxes and a visit to a agent who specialises in registration paid the fees and everything was to be OK......No

No Nip no registration.............And I should not have bought a car with Polish reg in England... its illegal...and the car was confiscated.
The car then was bought back from the authorities by my cousin and he insured and registered it, the whole process took months due to my return to England for a while.

Poland is full of red tape, especially when it comes to non nationals.
Things might change next year 2012 apparently there is a lobby to simplify things to fall in line with the rest of europe.

If I were you I'd get a friend to register the car and insure it with you as a part owner.

The thought has occurred, If you had a new European I.D. card would the have to be accepted ???.

Food for thought................. :0)

Travel / Driving to Poland from England - any tips? [264]

Hi Folks ....its been a while.

Done the drive from Manchester England to Gorlice in south east Poland many times, 1400 miles .
Done it by myself and with the wife and lad. Driving a bmw & land rover and traier,
but the best is a motorhome
If you feel tired pull over and go to sleep..... for as long as you like.
If the place looks interesting stay longer.
If your hungry stop and fry a egg.

What I'm realy saying is "whats the rush ?" Take your time and enjoy the trip.

And don't go faster than your Guardian Angel can fly................. :0)

Genealogy / Trying to locate my grandparents names, where to start the search? [19]

Ivonashaver....I can understand the frustration, Ive experienced the same thing on a house purchase because your mother married they look into your fathers line.

If you know where and when your father was born, get a copy of his birth cert. this will have your granddads full name, and your grandmothers maiden name. From there you could check army records to see if perhaps he served in the forces, and these record hold a lot of information.

As sugested look into your Grandads things you could find a Aliens Registration Book when he arrived in Sweeden, or perhaps when he arrived in England, these have date and place of birth registered in them.

The big problem is Polish authorities demand original copies (so get two or three when ordering). These will have to be translated by a sworn translator in Poland, they did not accept translations from a English Buero.

Its a long and difficult road and you may ask yourself.......Why do I want a Polish passport?

Good Luck........

Genealogy / Vintage Photos of Polish ancestors [144]

This is my favorite picture of all time. I saw it when I last visited Poland in April, it is in possesion of my last remaining Aunt. So it is the didgitised copy of a photographed copy of the original which had been cut out in a oval shape.

I shows my Grandad, Grandma and my Father just before he was taken for forced labour to Austria. Grandad was blown up allong with two of his youngest sons all in the same blast. Grandma lost it and was found a couple of days later in a derelict church. She lived on into her eighties and now lies in a 11th century church yard near Wroclaw.

History / Unusual soldier (The bear - named Voytek) [71]

A pal of my father served with Wojtek all the way from Iran to demob in Scotland. he has very vivid memories of Wojtek and his daily bath in the river while in Iran. As a child I always thought that it was just a barrack room story........

she threw a hissy fit because he was marrying outside of his ethnic group.

Met a elder cousin on this trip who at first meeting I warmed to...She was definately the rebel in the family.

I was at that time back in the Lemko village of Bodaki where my mother came from. She eventualy explained that she had literaly been blanked by her father for marrying a Polish man. She left the family home with nothing but made good, now she has her own home and family in a nearby town, and sadly regrets the rift with her father was never repaired before her father died. Now she just visits the village and family from time to time.

My mother married a polish man, I wonder weather that had been a major factor why she never returned to her homeland.......

Genealogy / Vintage Photos of Polish ancestors [144]

Just came back from a trip to Poland, had a great time lost two days at a weding and hooked up with pleanty of relatives I'd not met before.

One aunt pulled out a box full of photo's and proceded to show them to me explaining to me who the particular relative was. It was all quite macarbe, because all the pics I was being shown were of aunts, uncles, cousins and indeed one of my Gran dead, lying in the coffin rosery beads entwined in her finger's.

All the time I was thinking please show me a picture of someone in a happy pose saying cheese for the camera. What can you say though...."Oh yes now thats a good one of uncle Piotr, he looks realy well there. How did he die?"

This happend on several occations with a few different people, and they all had the same photo's. I couldn't build a conversation arround those images, it's as though there was only one person who had a camera and he only went to funerals.

Bizzare quite bizzare.

Got some good ones of my own though :0)

Genealogy / How hard is it to get a Polish passport? [74]

Anybody of Polish origin can have one but what for?

A Good question........There don't seem to be any advantages in possessing one if you are within the EU. American citizens may find it an advantage if they need to buy land in poland.

But any case it will not make you anymore Polish than you are now.

Love / Polish men's pride! [23]

To say you're sorry when you feel you're in the right is very dificult, I've a Polish stuborn streak as did my Father and my eldest son, but we don't dwell on it for long.

In a working enviroment , if it was a public argument and his boss has asked him to leave, the boss won't back down, a matter of face.

An appology may save his job, but if he has a greivience he could take it to a tribuneral.
