News / Flood situation worsens in southern Poland [119]

We have a large canal system, we have sea front defences, we have 100s of reservoirs and lots of dams, but we also have moutains and valleys and large rivers which makes our landscape more difficult than Hollands to manage, we are also an Island and are situated geographically so that we will always generally have poor weather conditions.

Well, I'm sure there's nothing you folks can't manage? Oh, and we have plenty of rainy days too, and it's always storming where I live! (Near the coast.)

We have sunshine here and whilst its been the coldest May on record, its been dry...25 degrees and sunshine on Friday ;0)

Same here, I might actually go to the beach! (But you never really know for certain with the kind of weather predictions we're having!)

Its been 13 years since Poland's last really bad flooding, hopefully it wont become a frequent occurrence..

You know, I really don't want to be a prophet of doom all the time, but with the way things are going with our climate, I think it will happen more frequenty.

This is the problem with rumours, they cause panic and that causes problems.

I agree, people should inform themselves properly before they start yelling, because this is pretty serious business, and I could understand it's easy to freak people out!

Travel / How much money do I need to travel to Poland from Argentina? [9]

Why don't you Google prices for airline tickets? Oh, and while you're at it, you could also try to Google for Polish prices, and then calculate what you might need or spend by using an online currency convertor.

:)

Always happy to point out the obvious!

Venice beat everyone to it and if they can pull it off im sure the rest of the world can!

Venice doesn't float actually. It has been built on pillars. (And it's also slowly sinking?) So yes, I hope we will beat you to it!

;)

But it is rather profound the scenes that i am seeing in pictures and videoclips but one about Poland is it can overcome over any difficulty.

I'm sure they're pretty resilient by nature.

News / Flood situation worsens in southern Poland [119]

Suggesting that Poles build artificial ponds and canals will not be a cheap as letting natural flood plains to flood - as nature intended.

It's a matter of priorities. Ofcourse it will cost a lot, but what will all the damage cost you eventually if you're willing to take a gamble? I mean, nature will always find a way, and the chances it will flood exactly as predicted will be very small, unless you master your water. There will always be unforeseen circumstances, but applying water management will give you much more certainty. Even then you'll have to adapt sometimes. I mean, we might be able to predict the weather for weeks to come, but who says it won't be raining even harder within 60 years or so? It's not only the rivers which cause flooding, and who says the rain will only fall on the natural flood plains? You need a controlled redirection of water somehow, but I guess that's all future talk.

News / Flood situation worsens in southern Poland [119]

What happened, from my perspective, was I couldn't cut the grass (my indicator) cause it was raining a little everyday for about a week. The ground became saturated and then the heavy rain fell and was not absorbed but flooded the whole place.
have really never seen anything like it before in my life.

Well, now you have, and I hope that little insight has been an eye-opener. (Because it's the main reason, believe it or not.)

The Dutch are the leaders in water management and it really needs to be managed here.

Yes, and that's what I mean. (It's usually the condition of the groundwater which causes flooding, and not the river itself, as many people might believe.) I think the Polish shouldn't be too proud to ask for assistance from our little frog country somewhere in the near future. (We've helped the Americans aswell after the flooding of New Orleans happened!) I'm not trying to sound arrogant here, but our country has been studying this subject for centuries. I doubt the people of Poland have the same kind of experience and expertise available to them.

:)

I just called my parents in Kraków. Cellars in their block are flooded. They live near Vistula river. My mother was to attend the funeral of her brother today but was too afraid to leave the house. I'm worried.

I've heard they're doing everything they can, and a lot of people are definitely looking after eachother. I know it's easy for me to say, but you don't have to worry yourself too much!

News / Flood situation worsens in southern Poland [119]

The rainfall causes the rivers to burst their banks.

Ofcourse it does, but the rainfall also causes saturation of the ground, lakes, canals, buffers, etc!

The damage is extensive, two banked walls to the Wisla have burst in Krakow, flooding streets.

I agree, this is serious.

I think we'll be living 50 meters below sea-level by then? (We're actually thinking about creating floating cities, and something tells me we would actually be able to pull it off, so I'm not exactly worried about the future!)

News / Flood situation worsens in southern Poland [119]

No, I don't mean reclaiming land or building below sea level. For your information, we also have created bufferzones (Artificial lakes.) and side canals. You didn't think we were pumping it out all at once did you? No, we need to redirect the water first. We have a word for it, we call it Water Management. I really think you guys should think about it, because I've seen some pictures, and it's not only caused by rivers, but also by the heavy rainfall in some areas. (Which means the water can't go anywhere.) I don't think it will stop raining in the future, so that's why.

Maybe you should think about doing what we've done in Holland. Erect dykes and dig artificial side canals to create a buffer, and pump it out at the sea. It's not a stupid idea, especially not if you're going to look at the future.

Oh, and you really can't blame a few countries for the climate change. We still aren't certain if humans are causing it, but if we could say this with absolute certainty, then all of us would be equally responsible for that.

Tax payers shouldn't pay for eachother? Aren't you happy to help eachother out then? What if it happened to you tomorrow? Jeez, a bit of solidarity wouldn't hurt some of us, that's for sure!

Let's hope it stops raining for you guys, and I wish all of you safe travels. Be careful out there!

If the blame is on the local authorities, are they allowed to pass the responsibility onto the most developed countries claiming it has happened due to the climate change they have caused?

No offense, but that's ridiculous. As if Polish people never had heavy industry, as if Polish people don't drive cars?? You have my sympathy, but no, no blame. If humans are causing climate change, then I'm afraid all of us are equally responsible. I think it's better to focus on what can be done about it.

In some pictures things are looking grim indeed. I'm sorry for those people who have lost their homes. If there's any way volunteers from other countries could do something to help people, you should let me know, because I'm jobless at the moment! (I really wouldn't mind to shovel some dirt if you have a place for me to sleep!)

History / How Polish history is viewed by other countries textbooks [124]

I'm afraid I've read nothing about Poland in my history books. (Or so little I can't remember!) I've seen plenty about it on the news though, especially after that blasted wall came down! I was three or four back then, and I was wondering why all these people were making such a fuss about a wall. (I didn't get it back then!) I used to have a friend who grew up in Holland later on in my life. He was born in Poland, so he told me a few things but it's not like he could tell me much! (He left Poland at the age of five or something!) To be honest Poland was a bit of a mystery to most of us. (Which made me curious!)

:)

So there you have it!

Language / Is it too late for me to learn Polish..? [65]

It's never too late to learn Polish, and you're pretty young so you've got all the time in the world! It's hard to learn the language without a teacher though, because some words are hard to remember, and even harder to pronounce! But if you're going to practice a lot and try to speak it frequently, then I'm sure you'll get there!

:)

Good luck!

Love / Polish girls attitudes towards sex. [568]

I'm a Lutheran and I guess pretty conservative in certain ways but in my view fanasies are absolutely normal and a healthy part of human sexuality.

:)

So keep your fantasies where they belong, between you and your loved one.

Unless you're both honest and open-minded. (It's risky though, there's always a chance someone might regret it.) I wouldn't even tell my loved one my fantasies. (Yes, they're *that* bad!)

;P

I bet some people are curious now. Well, too bad!

It violates international privacy laws, to be exact. Now, leave the guy alone. He's got a gorgeous wife (Yes, he has! I don't mean this in a pervy way!) and he's obviously very happy with her. He already told you he didn't have any intention of starting something with you on the sideline, so you should leave it at that.

First of all, a PRIVATE MESSAGE (PM) is a private message! - between you and Seanus and no one else. Always and with no exceptions.

Refreshing, someone with manners and common sense! (Please stay here, you could keep me from going insane!)

History / If i could write European history i would unite Europe under Polish language [67]

Yes, terrible. You should all speak Dutch.

It could be one of the oldest languages in Europe aswell. Know why? Because it was scientifically proven that our language is the only language on this globe which contains every possible sound the human mouth is able to produce. Other languages all lack a few sounds. (Look it up if you don't believe me!)

It's also scientifically proven our language stimulates the creative parts of the brain, because we use a lot of imagery in our language. Dutch is very creative, and there are literally hundreds of different ways to say the exact same thing. Even with single words. Polish is harder to pronounce, and technically, harder to learn. What makes Dutch hard to learn is our imagery and use of metaphores. Someone who thinks he or she has mastered Dutch will still not be able to understand a lot of things I say, because I would use funny and creative ways to say the same, but in a different way. It'll take most people atleast five more years to understand everything completely.

I wouldn't mind one language in Europe, but you know, it's the same as with the Euro. It won't work anyway. We all value our own identity. And honestly, isn't it much more interesting and funnier to experience different languages when you're on holidays? Variety is the spice of life and all that!

:)

..and I'm a better flirt when I have an excuse to use body language!

Off-Topic / Some Kurdish and Polish Similarities [53]

But these instances dont halt us from the fact that English "house", German "Haus", and Dutch "huis" are etymologically similar and no one has borrowed it from the others.

That's because one and the same tribe settled down in these regions in the past, and ofcourse their language evolved over time. I guess that's what I mean with real similarities and coincedental similarities.

Thanks for your comment STFU. But all due respect I am afraid none of the words mentioned under the post "An Etymological Similitude" are coincidentally similar.

Well, I think a lot of your examples seemed to be coincedental similarities. Some aren't though!

Thanks by the way, language is all I got

I can do magic (wordplay.) with words if I really want to. I love language. (I used to write funny punchlines and poetry a lot, but somehow I've lost my inspiration.)

But I cannot believe that you got Turkish words in Polish too?! How come since Poland was never ever under the sway of Ottomans.

Look at the world map. Slavic territory. Turkish territory. Slavic languages share a lot of similarities, and some Slavic tribes encountered the Ottomans. (There are probably better examples, but I can't help but to think of Vlad the impaler!)

What a breath of fresh air to have an inertesting thread :D

Off-Topic / Some Kurdish and Polish Similarities [53]

You can find coincendental similarities among all the languages of the world. In the past, people travelled the whole globe, traded, and exchanged information. So I'd call it hardly surprising that you can find a few similarities.

:)

But I won't stop you from having fun with language!

Genealogy / DeAmong, DeCroix - Finding a countess [15]

His name wasn't entirely French either. I'd say Adolph Gronland sounds Prussian. DeCroix would definitely be French, and I know we have that name in our family tree somewhere so that's without a doubt, a French Aristocrat. DeAmong doesn't sound French to me at all though. Nor Slavic. Are you absolutely sure about this name?

Love / My recent experience with a Polish girl. [231]

women are creatures that react negatively to too much effort, especially by unskilled people or guys they want to avoid in the first place.

Oh, but really you can never show too much effort, if only you know all the right ways to her heart.

Love / Dating a Polish guy for three years. Will he ever marry me? [44]

Sorry but what sort of 23 year old would want to marry a women 10 years older than him with 2 kids, Thats not what 23 year olds do, they should be out having fun.

I don't know, a 23 year old who's more mature than most 23 year olds perhaps? (Maybe some people have different ideas about fun?) Why should they? Is there a code of conduct for what people should, or shouldn't do when they're 23?

Well than enjoy what you have now and don't let worrying what will happen 10 years from now spoil your relationship.

Exactly.

Love / Dating a Polish guy for three years. Will he ever marry me? [44]

Hey, no one can look into the future, and ofcourse he could always leave you when you're married aswell. You're obviously doing something right if you've been with eachother for three years already. So if you're both happy with eachother then why should you have to worry about splitting up?

Why don't you talk about living together with him? Maybe he needs to get used to the whole idea? (He's still very young, and you're his first girlfriend after all!) If it turns out he doesn't want to live with you then you should move on..

She wants some kind of commitment so the guy doesn't wander back to Poland.

Sure, but commitment doesn't mean anything if it only lives on a piece of paper, and you can't force commitment through a piece of paper either. You either carry a promise in your heart or you don't..

Life / Why are Poles in other countries called "Plastic Poles"? [168]

I'm not telling you that you can't be proud of where you're coming from. I'm just telling you that we're all human, with or without our current borders. I'm proud when I have my reasons to be proud, and I'm not so proud when I have reasons not to be. My nationality doesn't explain who I am as a person.

But ofcourse I'll be cheering when Holland wins the World Cup! It's just that I prefer to be objective. I can point out flaws in my own country, I can talk about problems when I feel the solutions can be simple. Which doesn't mean I'm a traitor.

If you're proud of your culture, fine with me, but you have two cultures to be proud of then. And what is culture? Culture always changes! Anyway, I'm proud of people who truly fight for what's right, and I don't care on which side of the political spectrum they're moving.

I'm not telling you anything. As far as I'm concerned, you're free to be who you want to be, if you allow others to be who they want to be aswell. Simple really. Just my two cents.

:)

As you were!
