News / Poland's Ruch Narodowy - should it be banned? [62]

They seem to have quite a fooling, though I don't even know if they take themselves seriously.

News / Hooligans in PRL times ... and Warsaw in 2012 [28]

I was there on Sunday night. Quite the sight.
I have pictures and a write-up here: polishmeknob.blogspot.com/2012/11/independence-day.html

Anyway, it was pretty insane. I just don't understand why they're so angry!

Life / Polish clothing - Polish folk costumes [28]

My mom tried to encourage me to participate in Polish folk dancing, when I was a kid. Now I wish I would have listened to mama:(

Is Polish folk dancing organized like Irish stepdancing (i.e. competition-wise)?
Plus, it's never too late to start ;)

Life / The Polish Way to Ask Questions [41]

That's weird question... How can someone ask about a girl/boy that someone doesn't have?

It's implying that you would/should/had a girl/boyfriend, but right now do not.
Like I said, it may be polite, but it's kind of irritating sometimes when you have to think for a second to find out what they may be asking.

Life / The Polish Way to Ask Questions [41]

While Poles are often exceedingly polite, they have a peculiar (and often infuriating) way of asking questions. Basically, in my experience, they rarely ask direct questions. Instead of saying, "Do you need help?", they will most likely say, "You do not need help, right?" (They are being polite implying that I am not helpless.) Or, they will say something like, "Tell me about the girl/boy that you don't have." Instead of saying, "Why are you single?" It's all done with good intentions, but it's rather annoying.

Does anyone else have these types of experiences?!

Law / Fees/tax on importing Computer from US to Poland [7]

Buy it in the US, but have it shipped to a friend/family member in the US. That person can open the packaging and send you the computer listed as a GIFT on the customs declaration. This will help you bypass the sales tax.

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

The same thing happened in PL in 1999 and then 2001 it was back to normal. As the road infrastructure gets better in Warsaw, people will move out to houses in the burbs.

True, true. Also, as the rail infrastructure improves, people can buy cheaper places in small towns in the outlying areas.

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

The thing is, is that there's still plenty of demand for housing.

Plus, prices in Warsaw need to fall quite a bit more for younger folks to be able to buy them.

Food / Paczki - Receipe for polish donuts [19]

Translating it was a pain though. These recipes often skip steps, leave out ingredients until almost done, and assume you've made the recipe over and over before. Some editing and stuff had to be done to actually make it usable by someone who is not a skilled babcia.

Food / Paczki - Receipe for polish donuts [19]

Merged: Traditional Paczki Recipe from babcia!

I got it from a babcia herself!

Without much further ado, here's a traditional recipe:

1 kg flour
100 grams yeast
1/2 liter milk (warm)
7 yolks
1 whole egg
3/4 cup sugar
100 grams butter (melted, cooled)
1 jigger (shot) of rum or spirytus (grain alcohol)
Juice of 1 lemon
Pinch of salt
