Genealogy / Krupski name [36]

Hello everyone. Well, this is my first post :) I do not speak polish , forgive me!
I am searching for any input on the name Krupski.
My grandfather was Dominick Krupski and he was born to John Krupski and Annie Dzmitkowicz Krupski ( maiden and married name) in Suffolk county newyork in 1918. My grandfathers birth verification letter states that both John and Annie were from Russia but my family has a history of Polish nicknames like " Ski" for my grandpa and my Uncle " Polock". I understand that many Polish reigons were under russian rule around the time they came to the US and I know that upon arrival many names were either misspelled or americanized. I am aware that it could have been Krupksa, krupskya etc...and I find no trace of the name Dzmitkowicz anywhere, I am thinking it was more like Demkowicz. ( Jan Krupsky..etc....Ana Demkowicz...?)

I can gind NO information on either of them, as most Krupski famly tress are of polish decent. I feel like the long lost krupski of someone and I fit nowhere in anyones family tree. Worse case scenerio ---My grandparents were the last survivors of their family and all information was lost with them.

Any information or input would be appreciated!

Genealogy / Krupski name [36]

her father was Konstantin Ignat'evich Krupsky. I believe he was orphaned as a child and can find no trace of brothers or any son who could have passed on his name. So, 99% sure that I am not related to Krupsky.

Thank you for your response however :)

Genealogy / Krupski name [36]

Yes, I have checked many places. Familysearch, geneology.com, familytree.com. I find no information past my grandfather. It is as if they just disspeared. But you know, I should check again. After staring at the computer for hours my brain starts to fizz and it is possible to miss information.

I might just have to save for a couple months and pay to join a forum. Shame you have to pay to find your roots.

Thank you! Alot of people have told me that this name was just not linguistically possible with the polish language. Dzmitrowicz, Dymitrowicz yes maybe....at least I know that there is even the slightest possibility that Dzmitkowicz is possible :) ahhh....the taste of hope!

Caprice49. It is the name on a Verified Transcript from the Register of Births for my grandfather. Annie Dzmitkowicz Krupski. Although it still could be misspelled. With my luck it is.

Genealogy / Missing/unknown letter in my great-grandmother's last name. Any ideas? [34]

I was having the same problems with my great grandmothers name Dzmitkowicz.
You should check out
stevemorse.org
It is linked to Ellis island and has search engines for other ports of entry, marriage indexes...you can really narrow your search or broaden it out in the case of spelling errors. Census, Marriage, death, birth, indexes for most ports of entry, even canadian borders.

Check it out, it may help.

I have a theory!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! a lower case "k" in cursive can very well be mistaken with a lower case "r". In all actuality it could be just Dzmitrowicz, of which there are plenty in the North East US. The slash on the ' t ' could have just been a wee bit too flourished and made the ' r ' look like a ' k '......:z

Or am I getting too complex? :o)

Anyway, I am hoping to get in touch with a long lost aunt who would know more about it all than any other. I hear my grandfather was a mean bugger and didn't talk about his parents.

The original birth was probably signed by hand by my great grandma in cursive of course.
Her name was probably Dzmitrowicz OR Dymitrowicz. The person typing the transcrpit in 1936 from the original probably changed it to Dzmitkowicz, thinking the ' r' was a lower case ' k ' and maybe or maybe not interchanging the Z and Y as both in cursive can be mistaken.

Alrighty then.
It is funny how things sometimes are simpler than we make them out to be. :) I shall feel dumb for 24 seconds and move on!
Thank you all again for your suggegstions.
I will try to be a big girl and take it from here :p

Life / Alcohol problems of Polish people [141]

I would really say that Polish people love to drink-well most of them(many of you are probably thinking"no s*it") But does anyone here have family who have problems with alcohol?
I certainley do, my family. 2 of my uncles died of alcohol. Its the polish and the Irish who haves drinking problems-i think.

My dad was a severe alcoholic since I was born, He died from it in 2008. Probably the worst drunk there is. My uncle Polock drank his whole life and finally his heart gave out. My aunt and uncle both struggle this day with alcohol. My Grandpa Ski was a mean drinker and I think my grandma was too.....The krupski side of my family has always been associated with severe alcoholism, known well in the little bars in our community. I have to watch myself too.

But is it because they have Polish blood? No. Every nation has it's drunks.
Even the animal kingdom has it's drunk :

Language / I need some encouragement from Polish language speakers! [30]

I have been looking at the Polish language for the past few weeks. I usually dance around a language for a month or two. Looking at it, putting it down, looking at it again, getting just a little taste and I have to tell you...Polish seems really hard for me! I speak French which is the easiest to learn and I even found Albanian easier than Polish.

There is a language program you can download for free called Byki. It is not high class but is covers the basic things, days, greetings, etc...you learn by reading, listening, repeating and writing. You should check it out.

To me it when you learn a language it is good to eat sleep and drink the language. I put Post-it-notes all over my house nameing whatever I stick it on in the language I want to learn..door, wall, couch, good mornings and how are you's on the frig so i see it when I wake up.

Genealogy / Krupski name [36]

Thank you for your reply and I apologize for the late response. I had to step away from the search for a few weeks. It was making me brain dead :)

I got in touch with my Aunt Kathy who lives in Maine. Obviously she is no longer a Krupski as she got married. She sent me some paperwork and pictures of her parents but most of it is for her mothers family. However she did state that one of her aunts ( my grandfathers sister I beleive) is still alive and they call her Aunt Fritzie. My aunt Kathy is not young anymore, neither is AUnt Fritizie but she promised me that she would try to get ahold of her and ask her some questions. My grandfathers family is from Long Island, that is where they settled after they arrived from Europe. She told me he had many brothers and sisters.

I'll be honest. Not one of my close aunts or uncles has any information on the krupski side of the family. My aunt Kathy would be the only one and even than she does not have that much information. Look, my father drank a lot. He used to joke about how we had distant relatives that owned a potato or pumpkin farm somewhere in NY. I never took this to heart because ppl exaggerate when they drink but you never know.

That is all the information I have. Besides the rumour that my great grandmother Annie Dmitkowicz commited suicide in NY.
It is quite possible that we may be distant relatives. I am searching blind here with the hope that one day I will come across someone who says " Hey, that was MY great grandfather too!"....fat chance though, huh? :)
