News / Amber Gold and other Poland's suspicious institutions [139]

I never thought of that, actually - I imagined idiots in their 30's falling for it!

When I watch TV reports on it, they show only pensioners.

Pawian, being a man of history - do you know if there was ever a high profile case like this in the past, where a "bank" had acted like this?

Yes, I mentioned it

There were two or three frauds like this in Poland.

Check Grobelny parabank fraud in early 1990s:
Sorry, only in Polish:

News / Amber Gold and other Poland's suspicious institutions [139]

Anyone with half a brain would see the 13% returns advertised and run a mile - especially when you can take a loan for as little as 11%.

Unfortunately, mostly elderly people have fallen for it. They were brought up in the old system and still haven`t grasped certain things.

Law / The Stock Exchange - Poland (GPW ... or WSE). Do you invest? [34]

If hard times come, and many say they are destined to come, two year's time will be too promptly to come back to the stock market

You think the black scenario will happen?

Ooops...

But I also thought about it.......

That is why I secured myself with this:

come back in two years time orso.

:):):):)

(unless you are a witty investor who invests on your own).

No, I am not. I tried in 1990s but it wasn`t successful. :(:(:(

Besides, I think it is a deadly boring activity.

News / Why are Czechs more effective than Poles and Poland? [116]

Austria did not develop Bohemia - Austria inherited a developed Bohemia. Bohemia/Czechs have been developed ('playing the game of civilization') as has much of their country for centuries longer then Poland.

Oh, I see. Thanks. I will try to remember that for future use.

PS. Are you of Czech origin?

Law / Investment advice - my options in Poland? [50]

I've accumulated a small sum (around 15k zl)

Yes, it is small, indeed.

My advice: don`t bother to look for an advisor, you will only lose time. Just go and paint the town red for a few nights.

Life / Observation of Polish drivers, by and English anthropologist. [94]

Two years ago, for example, my fiancé Henry took me to visit some friends in Poland.

A perfect example of this situation:
Miraculously escaped death by a car driver who, despite the lack of space on the road decided to start overtaking . " He was lucky I was not killed . Only by truck driver who pulled off the road , there were no leaders " - wrote on the Contact box 24 surfer who has registered dangerous situation . " A classic example of the lack of imagination" - says Marek road behavior pirate Konkolewski Police Headquarters .

Fortunately, such incidents are rare.

BTW, when in Gdańsk, we walked past Amber Gold headquarters. I knew nothing about it then, but I liked the contrast it created with the buildings in the background.

News / Why are Czechs more effective than Poles and Poland? [116]

They lare a bit ahead, yes.

But Poland is catching up. The distance was much bigger when communism fell.

Why ahead?

The answer is simple - in the past, all Czechs were under Austrian control, while half Poland was under Russian control. Austria was better developed than Russia.

News / Amber Gold and other Poland's suspicious institutions [139]

Well, be I'd be interested to hear the detailed explanation.

In short, they buy gold when it is cheap and sell when the price rises. Sort of, playing the market. Currently, this Plichta guy claims they have 100 kg of gold which they are going to sell.

News / Amber Gold and other Poland's suspicious institutions [139]

They are offering 10% return on deposits, and up to 16,5% if you make a 5 year deposit.

It is allegedly based on the price of gold.

There were two or three frauds like this in Poland.

They happen in every country from time to time.

People are hopelessly gullible.

TheOther is on your ignore list. [+]

The Other, I cannot read your post as:

1. I am a bit intoxicated with wine, as a cultural Krakovian usually is on such a beautiful day as today. We spent the day at the lake near Krakow, called Krakowian Balaton. I stayed in the water for 3 hours.

2. You are on my ignore list for posting stupid things about Krakow and Poland.

But if you tell me it is worth reading, I will unblock you. Promise!

Travel / What Polish Region is LEAST VISTED By Foreign Visitors? [6]

there's nothing for Czechs to visit...

A lot. Czechs buy out stuff from Polish shops, just like Slovaks and Lithuanians. Opolskie voivodship has a long border with Czech Republic. It is also tourism. :):):):)

Czech invasion...... on Polish shops:
Czechs - especially those who live in Zaolzie - refrain from shopping on their side of the border. A similar situation is also in the band of the border with Germany.

Many small shops colonial bankrupt . There is also hope that it will be better. VAT on food is up to 14 , and from the autumn will increase by one percent. In Poland there is a 5- and, in Germany, a 7 percent VAT.

News / Amber Gold and other Poland's suspicious institutions [139]

Pawian - can you explain something to me?

Yes, of course.

Why didn't the relevant authorities stop them much earlier?

Can I answer your question with another question, like a decent Jew? :):):):):):):):)

Why didn`t the relevant American authorities stop Bernard Madoff from robbing his clients of 50 billion $ much earlier???? :):):):)

The Securities and Exchange Commission, in a civil complaint, said it was an ongoing $50 billion swindle, and asked a judge to seize the firm and its assets. "Our complaint alleges a stunning fraud that appears to be of epic proportions," said Andrew M. Calamari, associate director of enforcement..."

You are all so insular.

True. Poland was declared a green island a few years ago.

Hi ..why do you polish people never seem to want to mix with other cultures?

What for? I don`t need other cultures to mix with. My Polish culture satisfies me perfectly. I can read about other cultures in the book or Net (forums), that`s enough. Life is too short, you will never be able to mix with all cultures in the world. Better stick to one which you like and appreciate.

SImple, isn`t it?

News / Amber Gold and other Poland's suspicious institutions [139]

I hope none of PF posters invested his/her funds in Amber Gold.

Clients of the troubled parabank Amber Gold have not yet been able to start withdrawing their deposits, as they had been told they could from today, reported TVN24. In one Warsaw branch clients were told they would have to wait several days for their money and will lose up to 35 percent of the value of their deposits.

Amber Gold stopped paying out money on August 3 after the firm's clients had effectively made a run on their accounts, following media speculation that the company was running out of money.

The speculation began when OLT Express, a firm owned by Amber Gold, began suspending flights due to lack of funds - it filed for bankruptcy last week. The scrutiny intensified after Polish media reported that Marcin Plichta, the owner of Amber Gold, had previously been convicted of fraud.

magielfinansowy.nowyekran.pl/post/70440,zlociutki-cos-tu-smierdzi

Enraged clients accuse the Polish authorities of having ignored the parabank`s suspicious activities. But the warnings have been available for everybody to read on Financial Supervision Commission`s site for over 2 years.

Come on, guys, the state isn`t able to think for every citizen.

Law / The Stock Exchange - Poland (GPW ... or WSE). Do you invest? [34]

Today I closed nearly all my units in a fund that invests in WSE. I left only 10 units to keep the account. I made this investment in January 2005, for 7.5 years it brought 30% profit. Not bad. Could be much better, 120%, if I closed units in July 2007 (the peak) or nearly 70% in May 2011. Never mind, I am a long term investor. :)

Now I feel it is better to withdraw from stocks as hard times are coming. But I am going to come back in two years time or so.

30% profit.

Of course, it is clean 30, after deducting tax and average annual inflation.
