Recipe

Serbian Burgers (Pljeskavica)

pljeskavica

Ingredients

1 pound ground beef, preferably chuck
1 pound ground veal
1 pound ground pork, preferably neck or jowl meat; or use 1/3 pound pork belly and 2/3 pound regular ground pork
½ cup finely chopped onions plus minced onions, for serving
1 ½ teaspoons salt
1 tablespoon black pepper; or use 2 teaspoons sweet paprika and 1 teaspoon black pepper
¼ cup sparkling water
6 pita breads, warmed or toasted
Kajmak with herbs (see recipe)
Red pepper-eggplant ajvar (see recipe)

Preparation

In a large bowl, place meats, 1/2 cup chopped onions, salt, pepper and sparkling water. Using your hands, lightly combine ingredients. Cover and refrigerate at least 3 hours or overnight. Divide mixture into six equal balls. Place one ball between two sheets of plastic wrap and use the heel of your hand to pound it to a thin patty, about 1/4-inch thick and 6 inches in diameter. Repeat with remaining meat; refrigerate patties about 1 hour. Heat a grill or heavy skillet to very hot. Cook patties, turning often, until well browned on both sides, about 5 minutes total. Cut pita breads in half horizontally, and serve burgers between pieces of pita. Sprinkle with onions and spread with kajmak and ajvar as desired.

'podmazat' (to bribe)

Sure, Panovie wants their share :)

in Serbia we say `podmazati`.

I can't say for Poland but there would certainly be a demand in Moscow.

There is that restaurant Banja Luka in Warsaw already. They doing fine. What i heard, Poles accept Serbian cuisine but, location is decisive, what i already predicts.

As for Moscow, yes, it would be interesting, too. It could work, i am sure. Just, i don`t have my own friends there as it is case with Warsaw.

By the way, have you already been to this notorious 'Putin bar' in Novi Sad? How come that Serbs betray the whole Russian nation naming a bar after a #1 Russophobe?

i visited place. Cool.

You have also restaurants and cafe-bars named after Tito, back then Yugoslav communist dictator but, in the same time, true gentleman and modern politician in his time.

Listen, you really needs to learn about Serbian logic and spirit. Yes, for Serbs, Warsaw, Kracow, Prague, Bratislava, Moscow, Minsk, Peterburg,.. truly means more then any western European city. No, not that Serbs atren`t aware of the Slavic weaknesses. They are, just, Serbs are Serbs. They truly believe in Slavic spring. Serbs, stubborn traditional Slavs and, at the same time, maybe the most modern Slavs. Go figure that. Sense of humor in Serbs is unbelievable.

See, west of Europe really really mistaken when took part in partition of Serbia and supported destruction of Yugoslavia by the line of German/Turkish interests and, fought against Serbs side by side with worse Arab mujaheedines. It was there stupid mistake. They stubbed Serbs in the back- you know we were in alliance with USA, Britain and France in two world wars. We seriously contributed to the ally victories. Now, Serbs wants to prove that Belgrade represent more important city in Europe then it is Brussels. And, Serbs would prove it. Brussels is only focused on interests of the west of Europe. Belgrade? Founded by the most glorious Celtic (ie Proto Slavic) tribe of Scordisci, that gave greatest resistance to Romans what is recorder in history, Belgrade is class for itself.

Novi Sad. My city. After Prague, Kracow and Chicago, Novi Sad is definitely most beautiful Slavic city. ;)

Crow, please stick to the topic of your own thread please.

Two things I don't like about it - the food is a bit greasy and if you have two many onions and ajvar then you smell too much for work or women.

listen, you can eat pljeskavica with many different additions. i myself, only when don`t have public obligations (or intimate), eat pljeskavica with ajvar or onion.

In most cases i eat pljeskavica without onion and ajvar. i just order pljeskavica with sour cream (on both halves of bun) and then plus tomato, green salad, cabbage. Its my favorite option. Then, as i said, when don`t go in public, i add onion, too.

You know, ... ćevapèići, pljeskavice, etc things. What are my chances in Poland? People would like it?

 -

Ćevapi
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C4%86evapi#Name_and_etymology

grilled dish of minced meat, a type of kebab, found traditionally in the countries of southeastern Europe (the Balkans).

Name and etymology

The word ćevap comes from the Serbian word `cev`, which means tube in English, sometimes with the generally South Slavic diminutive ending -èići (Bosnian, Croatian: ćevapèići/ćevapi; Slovene: èevapèièi/èevapi; Serbian: ћевапчићи/ћевапи, ćevapèići/ćevapi; Macedonian: Ќебапи, kjebapi; Bulgarian: Кебапчета, kebapcheta, Czech: èevabèièi). The word ćevapi is plural; the singular form ćevap is rarely used, as a typical serving consists of several ćevapi. They are also known as Balkan meatballs.

News / Poland to withdraw from Visegrad defence radar project [10]

The difference is that they're all on side except the biggest and most dangerous. Nobody can blame the Poles for being very wary of Russia and its allies.

At this moment circumstances puts Serbs and Russians on the same side (we faces same threat). That gives pretty clear signal to Poles that right now, they don`t need to fear from Russian invasion. It is so because Poles and Serbs represent traditional historical partners. Even more, Poles and Serbians are to each others good loyal brothers. So, even if no other reasons not to confront Poland, at least- Russia won`t dare to risk her relations with Serbia.

Even involvement of Serbs in Ukraine, gives guarantees for satisfaction of Polish interests in the region, on the long run. Yes, i am quite sure that i speak truth when say that are Serbians guarantors of Polish eastern borders. That is something what NATO can`t offer to Poland. Never. On the contrary

Actually, Polish people, intelligentsia and politics already realizing that Serbian challenges must be seen as Polish challenges, if Poland wants to survive.

necessary to be said here.

At this moment of history Poland and Russia are very mutually interdependent.

Till now, in history, Poland may benefited from weak Russia and/or opposite, Russia may benefited from weak Poland. Even then, neither Russians, neither Poles wanted total destruction of the opponent. It is because, no matter their mutual antagonism, they were aware of the extremely aggressive foreign, non-Slavic, factor on both- Poland and Russia. That is situation that exist now too, with further straightening of factors that increase mutual interdependence. Greater danger for Russia, Poland would feel more endangered. Not from Russia but, in case that Russia collapse. It is so, because without Russia, as factor of balance in Europe, same factors that could eventually destroy Russia, after finish with Russia (as if), would inevitable turn to finish with Poland. Reason would be invented in the blink of an eye.

And so, interdependence rising. Why would then Poland want to end this situation and give contribution to the destruction of Russia? For sure Poland won`t do that. Especially, ESPECIALLY, when situation qualitatively dramatically change with every new day and, when now Russia starting to have interest in strengthening of Poland in Central/Northern Europe, same was as profit from strengthening of Serbia on Balkan/Central Europe, as well as, let us also underline, from strengthening of China in Asia, Brazil in Latin America, etc, etc.

Poland to withdraw from Visegrad defence radar project

Its now more political move then anything else.

Poland may easily found itself in the crossfire, between west of Europe and Russia.

Also, if we follow logic of the NWO development, its reasonable to expect that is Poland, next point of crisis in Europe. Its the only vast Slavic state, except Russia, that isn`t fragmented till now. Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Ukraine were already object of trade.

But, Poland has last card to play if her political leadership isn`t entirely corrupt. That is military neutrality on global military alliances and move out of NATO. Still, one may note that Ukraine did played that card and we see that it didn`t save her. Yes, it is truth. Same is with Poland. Crisis is inevitable. Declaration of neutrality would only affect how would Poland go out from crisis. It can`t prevent crisis.

At this moment declaration of neutrality strategically has effect as if Poland declared formation of new Commonwealth. Think of it.

But, that would mean that Poland starting to think of herself. Right now, it suits Russia. Beware, it is west of Europe and USA that are now natural enemy of Poland.

Food / Was Slonina (Lard) originally extracted from Elephant meat? [17]

Shall we back to the topic, please?

well, if you have suggestion how to found out does `slonina` or `slanina` coming from `slon` (elephant) i would appreciate that.

word exist and has same meaning in Serbian, too

yes, some old word in Serbian also sounded like that if not the same. Just I don`t know is it originally Slavic or we (Poles and Serbs) borrowed from some other language.

słone- salty tasiting

ok. Its `slano` in Serbian

solone- salted

Serbs also say `osoljeno` or `posoljeno` or even `soljeno`- salted (when one eat meat and then add salt to correct the taste of food). `soljeno` could have same meaning with `osoljeno/posoljeno` and `usoljeno`, what depending on context.

`usoljeno` goes for meat that is prepared that way... salted, under pressure, smoked,.. this process is in Serbian known as `salamura`. `stavio sam meso u salamuru` > `i have placed meat in salt (?)`

Shall we back to the topic, please?

Food / Was Slonina (Lard) originally extracted from Elephant meat? [17]

and what is "salty" in Serbian? maybe you got it the same way - salty meat.

in Serbian > `usoljeno meso` > meaning if directly translated in English `meat placed in the salt`. This goes for the kind of meat that is prepared that way... `slanina je usoljeno meso` > could be translated as - `bacon is salted meat`

But, there is also `slano meso` > (for example)... `Meso nije slano` > `Meat isn`t salty`... `staviću so (sol) na meso` > `i will put salt on meat`

Point is,... i don`t know if English language has exact words that differ `usoljeno` and `slano`. What is situation with Polish?

What is also interesting, English word BACON has obvious Slavic origin.

etymonline.com/index.php?term=bacon

early 14c., "meat from the back and sides of a pig" (originally either fresh or cured, but especially cured), from Old French bacon, from Proto-Germanic *bakkon "back meat" (cognates: Old High German bahho, Old Dutch baken "bacon"). Slang phrase bring home the bacon first recorded 1908; bacon formerly being the staple meat of the working class.

see this now

Serbian BATAK means `meat from the back and sides of a pig`. Word `batak` in Serbian coming from word `bat` that in English means `hammer`. `BAT` in `BATAK` because one ``hammering the land`` when he walk.

Interesting

Would anyone ever tried to find out if "slonina" was originally extracted from elephant meat?

Is this the same what is in Serbian `slanina`? i suppose so

Yes it is from elephant, too bad we killed them all :-/

There is much more in it then possibility that elephants were all eaten, in the vicinity of Poles.

This could be taken as one of proofs that ancestors of modern day Poles originally populated Poland from the Balkan along the Danube river. Then, if we have `feed-back` of the word `slonina` - `slanina` on direction South-East to the Northern Europe (and if it is for sure based on the elephant meat), we can, by the evolution of language, say that this could be proof that speaks in the favor of Slavic autohtonicity in Europe.

Spot this... one of oldest Europe`s Mammoth`s skeletons is found in Serbia (500.000 years old), on Balkan (that was Ice age refugium during periods of glaciations; refugium means that it was place where was warmer climate and was possible for human civilization to exist in Europe during Ice age; when Ice age finished people started to disperse deeper in continent- always (!), preferable along rivers)

Serbian archaeologists on Friday used heavy machinery to move a female mammoth skeleton -- believed to be one million years old -- from an open mine pit where it was unearthed nearly five years ago.

Serbian archaeologists say Vika is a southern mammoth, or mammuthus meridionalis, one of the oldest species found in Europe, which originated from northern Africa and did not have fur.

History / WWII - who really was the first to help Poland? [900]

Let us here don`t manipulate with situation which was result from the German genocide on Serbs. Chetniks were legitimate members of the Yugoslav Royal Army, while government and King were in exile in Britain.

Story is that Germans, for every 1 killed (by resistance movement) German soldier executed 100 Serbian civilians. So, Chetniks sometimes were forced to negotiate and to accept temporary cease fire with Germans in order to prevent further killings of Serbian civilians.

In any case, Chetniks of General Draza Mihailovic inflicted significant damage to the German forces during WWII. Its well know historical fact.

Through the undaunted efforts of his troops, many United States airmen were rescued and returned safely to friendly control. History / Why is the Battle of Grunwald celebrated more than the Battle of Lubiszewo? [29]

Well elaborated.

just few days ago i spoke to one friend of mine about battle of Grunwald. We both agree that battle was decisive for the survivor of Slavic west and by analogy for survivor of Slavic south. It goes hand in hand. Crucial battles of Poles vs. Germanics and Turks were decisive for survivor of Serbs and, crucial Serbian battles vs. Turks and Germanics were decisive for survivor of Poles.

sure. Lithuanians are now disoriented, subjugated to interests of EU and NATO leading powers. If Poland re-create Commonwealth things would change. But, is it Poland capable for that, its questionable. Still, i believe in Poland.

News / GERMANS WANT TO GERMANIZE KOPERNIK (COPERNICUS)! OUTRAGE! [1016]

I recall reading a study where the hair of Copernicus was analyzed and his Y chromosome signature was found to belong to the r1b haplogroup which is hard evidence that his paternal line was with high certainty German. (Most Polish men belong to the r1a haplogroup.)

that difference coming from fact that modern day Eastern Germans originates from Germanized Serbs, while Poles simple represent other branch of the Serbs (read Sarmatians).

History / Was the Polish/ Lithuanian commonwealth a European power? [111]

Harry

but, dilemma of this thread is clear... Was the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth a European power?

what you think? Why are you so selfish and don`t wish to share your opinion with rest of us?

As it happens, Crow, the vast majority of Poles are very enthusiastic supporters (particularly young Poles) of a newer commonwealth: it's called the European Union. Poles generally would much like to see their Ukrainian cousins in the Union. And their Belorussian cousins too.

believe it or not, Harry, i believe you on this one. Poles are wise.

Even my people (generally very suicidal), after all troubles that were unleashed on us by that same European Union, starts to see itself within EU. Better alive in EU then the alternative- destruction by EU. My people learned lesson. We accept destine of the conquered people and, we are now, after beaten like dogs, more opened. Life of servant is still live, after all.

Yes, yes,.. we shall all unite... Ukrainians, Belorussians, Poles, Serbs. EU leading powers needs us all.

But, it won`t harm if we have our dreams. See,... among those dreams, most beautiful one is the dream about new Commonwealth.

History / Was the Polish/ Lithuanian commonwealth a European power? [111]

No, relations are messed up now.

its a pity.

you got the authoritarian Belarus which try's to minimize the Polish minority (lots of Poles in Belarus, more then statistically reported), Oppressive Lithuanians and last but not least Neo-Bandera Ukrainians

no matter how i contemplate on politics, i can`t see where would finish Belarus. In branch of Slavs/Eastern Europeans led by Poland (what is now let`s say Visegrad Group) or in Eurasian Union? in any case i can`t imagine prolonged crisis between Poland and Belarus. Also, its absolutely mind blowing to me that are Lithuanians so passionately against Poland. Same goes for situation with Ukraine. i can`t understand penetration of those retro ideas there. As for the future trends, i expect normalization of relations between Lithuania-Poland and Ukraine-Poland. Its up to Poland to demonstrate, on one side- its economic power and stability and, on the other side- its balanced politics. Then, things would settle.

Unless things change, most people don't want a union with such hostile countries. There are those who wan't Kresy back, but that's not quite the same thing.

hope won`t die. That`s for sure.

Its National pride, the commonwealth was Poland's golden age.

i understand that.

History / Was the Polish/ Lithuanian commonwealth a European power? [111]

Most Poles are aware of Poland's history.

good news

Those keen on history will acknowledge the Commonwealth's influential role in some European affairs during the time of its existence. However, there aren't many today who long for its re-establishment in any form.

does it mean that Poles, among themselves, no matter in Poland or abroad, don`t even talk about possibility to re-create some sort of Commonwealth?

what more Poles think of Commonwealth that existed in past?

well noticed. i myself noted how is expected from Slavs to prove themselves to be bigger Europeans, then other Europeans. i tries to figure out is it in connection with amount of resources that are controlled by Slavic governments/countries and so, west of Europe worry are we competent enough to use it properly.

Have in mind that Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth had historical, linguistic and cultural continuity with the ground/territory where was formed. Basically, as great conglomerate founded on Slavic heritage (not hostile on foreign element but on the contrary, very tolerant, hospitable) and, inherited from and after Svatopluk`s Great Moravia, influenced strongly by the Serbian Empire.

On the contrary to it, Austro-Hungaria was Germanic creation on essentially culturally, linguistically and ethnically Slavic ground. It appeared as imposed foreign element that was hostile on domicile population. That`s the reason for the failure of A-H Empire.

Now, both Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Austro-Hungarian Empire were predominantly Catholic. So, when we are at reasons for the failure of Commonwealth, i found that problem wasn`t in Catholicism. Problem for sure also, wasn`t tolerance and free Slavic spirit. No, problem were backward neighbors of the Commonwealth. Commonwealth was in front of its time. Piedmont and embryo or real democracy, electoral system and human rights in modern sense of the word. In attempt to balance all interests, in hostile environment, Commonwealth collapsed.

In any event it's always the host that ends up having to clean up the mess.

great truth has been said here.

This is what destroyed The Commonwealth, not Sarmatism (true Poles) but propaganda will try to tell you otherwise.

i heard what British commentator on video said. What to tell you. Even when they appears to be nice on you, they think of their interests.

It was also in contradiction with my previous knowledge in case with how many people voted, as you said. Although he admits some accomplishments of the Commonwealth he obviously tries to minimize it. What is interesting, he practically said that is today`s Poland falsely creation because of its homogenous ethnic structure. Also, he, British (and we know how are they `loyal` to the continental Europe), underlined parallelism between back then Commonwealth and modern-day European Union. That turned to be pro-EU propaganda. It looks impossible to him to imagine, that are modern Slavs (Poles) capable to create any great conglomerate based on Slavic (Polish) language and that we all now have EU what suppose to satisfy all our necessities. When one listening to him, one coming to conclusion that he in fact said - `What can we do. Commonwealth wasn`t capable to survive test of time and today we have something better, we have EU. All accomplishments of the Commonwealth would be assimilated and added to the glory of European Union, which is m ore competent. Its better that way, because modern day Poland anyway represent false creation.`

Its looked at quite favorable,

fascinating. Thanks for info....
Good that people from the west of Europe can see, admit and understand Polish/Slavic accomplishments. If Slavs didn`t had the destine of eternal shield of Europe from the hostile non-Europeans (Mongols, Turcic people,...), we can only imagine how could Slavs contribute even more to the our Western civilization. Not to mention that Slavs were often victims of the western European greed, instead that western Europeans show solidarity with eastern Europe.

Szalawa, if you found some more videos (or links), please share information. i am very interested in this matter and want to learn as much as possible about back then Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, because Serbians had their role in it.
