Life / Queues in Poland - everyone in line is sandwiched [44]

I assume they were hoping to make you uncomfortable enough that you would relocate...

It looks like it, but it was absolutely surreal. They were the classic 'idiots abroad', or should I say 'buraks abroad' - even down to the fact that one of them left early to prepare the rosół. For the next few days, we were killing ourselves laughing as they sent someone down early in the morning to place towels in the Germanic fashion ;) It was a shame that their towels didn't mysteriously end up in the sea :(

..... or they come to sit right with you on the bus/tram/train or at restaurant/café when the whole place is empty or almost empty

Yes! I've had this on the bus before - an large, mostly empty bus, and I'm fond of sitting at the front of the bus. I'm sitting there peacefully when some middle aged guy gets on with his wife, and he sits right next to me with his wife sitting on the seat across. It was painfully obvious that she wanted to sit where I wanted to sit, but of course, it was better for her to make rude comments than to simply ask nicely if she could have the seat.

Life / Queues in Poland - everyone in line is sandwiched [44]

We had a particularly weird experience in Croatia last year. We went down to the pretty empty beach armed with all the usual stuff, set up and got comfy in the sun. About an hour late, a couple of Poles turned up and decided to set up about a metre away from me - on a mostly empty beach. Strange, but ok. Then the rest of their family turned up and decided to come right next to us - including one teenage girl that was lying with her face at my feet. The bloody beach wasn't crowded at all, but because we could understand their conversations (but they couldn't understand us...) - it transpires that they had been 'going there every day' and that 'those English people are in our space'.

No, I don't understand it at all. It's not like it was a prime spot on the beach or anything other than just a random place.

Polonia / Moving to Lviv, Ukraine - mother is Polish [8]

and they have war in some areas...

Only about what, 1200km from L'viv? ;)

That's like saying that buying property in Katowice was a bad idea in 1991 because rockets were raining down on Zagreb, which is only 750km away from Katowice.

News / Demonstrations in Poland in defence of democracy. [2554]

Given the way that a more than a few state-owned companies in the early '90s adopted a fairly original strategy with regard to tax, i.e. simply not bothering to pay it, one can't be too surprised that they had quite large debts.

I read an article about this very subject a while ago, and it seemed to have been absolutely widespread among those large local companies that tended to dominate the local town. There's two good examples near Poznań with the furniture factories in Swarzędz and Oborniki - both of them had a huge site in the middle of the town, they were the main employer and were seen as part of the social fabric of the town. Both of them went bankrupt shortly after Poland joined the EU, as years of total mismanagement and blatant nepotism saw them fail just as a huge new market opened up for them.

Polonia / Moving to Lviv, Ukraine - mother is Polish [8]

There's still a Polish speaking minority, and the language is well understood by locals. The version of Ukrainian spoken in L'viv isn't that far away from Polish as well. In practice, you can use Polish to get by, but you might need help when it comes to things such as medical care.

If you don't have Ukrainian citizenship, it's not very easy to move to Ukraine.

we need someone who can translate polish to ukrainian or ukrainian to polish.

That's not much of a problem in L'viv, there are plenty of people with a decent knowledge of Polish there.

Privatisation in BAlcerowicz's book meant selling things off to FOREIGN INTERESTS FOR A SONG.

What you're failing to mention is that those 'interests' were pretty much unviable in the free market. They were often relying on COMECON structures to provide them with markets, and once it became obvious that other countries would no longer purchase things at an inflated rate (mainly the Soviet Union) or provide raw materials below cost, they became suddenly unviable. That's exactly what condemned the Gdansk Shipyard, as it was entirely relying on subsidised steel which in turn relied on subsidised iron ore imports from Ukraine.

If you actually read what happened in 1989-1990, a lot of these businesses needed huge capital injections to even have a hope of producing goods that could be sold internationally. Ursus in Warsaw was a great example, but there are countless others. Poland couldn't have provided the cash and neither could most Polish companies.

Polish corporation could have been built up under the Bsalcerowicz plan and given first crack at privatised assets.

Where was the money coming from? Polish corporations would have needed loans and capital - but the West simply wasn't willing to lend any more, especially once it became obvious that East Germany was also deeply in trouble financially. Jeremy Sachs did a hell of a job with convincing Western lenders to forgive some of the debts, which is what allowed Poland to rise out of the mess in the mid 90's.

But he was so greedy for instant cash that he never even considered that.

Poland needed hard currency and investment. There wasn't much room to move - to keep people employed and to keep factories open, they needed investment - not in 1995, but in 1990.

If the ski lift is to sold to Slovakia or any foreign party, then better not to privatise it.

Which means that it will be deprived of needed investment and expertise. There's absolutely no reason for the state to own ski lifts - it's a relic of communism, and PiS only oppose it because it means less jobs for the boys.

Perhaps we should organise some demonstrations to protest against that and to demand that foreigners who bought Polish property for a song due to their dodgy connections should have their money returned to them and the property they cheated Poland out of returned to Poland?

Absolutely. I think it would be a good start to name and shame such people, so that they would be more...willing to return the property stolen.

Why is it that only Poland did not carry out a decent de-communisation or lustration campaign?

Many others didn't as well. The only country to my knowledge that did was the Czech Republic, and they're on the verge of being overtaken by Slovakia. Slovakia started off much poorer in 1993, so it shows how lustration didn't work economically.

This phrasing clearly implies that PiS is chomping down heartily at that trough....

They're not even bothering to hide it now. The latest story with PiS opposing the privatisation of the ski lift company is very obviously because they see it as yet another source of well paid jobs for party activists that need to be rewarded for their support. It's becoming more and more obvious that the real failing of PO was that didn't privatise enough.

Hard landing - immediate attempts to bring the guilty to justice inevitably lead to lots of innocent people being hurt and does not help longterm prospects for positive development.

Refer back to the Czech Republic. It was far wealthier than Poland and Slovakia in 1993, yet both countries are now on the verge of overtaking the Czech Republic. The country is a basketcase - they might have had lustration, but politically, it's a complete mess. They've had something like 12 Ministers for Transport in 10 years, the Czech Road Administration is riddled with corruption and incompetence and it shows how lustration simply resulted in corruption under different hats.

But this time Kaczyński's man beat Komorowski and PiS beat PO and consigned the ex-commies to political limbo or, more precisely, to the rubbish heap of history.

What are you on about, Polonius? The ex-PZPR men found their home in PiS, as can be seen by Kaczynski's right hand man, Piotrowicz.

You needn't thank me for the nobilitation of including you among the top-shelf losers and their toadies, all way beyond your class.

Polonius, you do realise that the opposition are in control of a large amount of local and provincial authorities?

PiS are by no means in complete control of this country, and they are not well represented in academia for instance.

You mean he was hated by PiS supporters because the PiS controlled media told them to hate him. Nothing more, nothing less. If he was so hated, he wouldn't have lost by just over 500,000 votes, and even then, it was his own apathy to blame rather than any hatred towards him.

The real reason people 'hated' him was because PiS couldn't stand the way that he beat Kaczyński in 2010.

News / PiS to impose blanket retail tax in Poland [291]

Biedronka is as tough as they come, they hold no prisoners and will dump one brand for another to keep products at the prices they want.

Yep. Now, if 95% of suppliers are Polish, that means Biedronka are going to find savings through the suppliers instead. Doesn't take a genius to work this one out...

And so it begins.

Small and medium entrepreneurs associated with the trade network Leviathan protest against the bill on the tax on retail sales. According to them after the entry into force of the law threatens them with bankruptcy... Businesses affiliated with the Polish trade network Leviathan directed an open letter to Prime Minister Beata Szydło and parliament. They explain that, among others, that the effect of the entry into force of the law on tax on retail sales will fall hundreds of small businesses and loss of jobs for more than 23 thousand people.

According to traders, it will cause drastic social consequences and "the danger of losing the existence of tens of thousands of workers and their families." "At risk will be the fate of our suppliers: local food producers, wholesalers, bakeries, meat processing plants, the farmers supplying vegetables and fruits, with whom we share a long-term partnership"

money/gospodarka/wiadomosci/artykul/podatek-od-marketow-protestuja-handlowcy-i,224,0,2012128.html

As I said all along, this tax will hurt Polish businesses and Polish consumers. Where's the Party spokesman when you need him to defend job losses and bankruptcies?

Polonius seems to have gone rather silent lately, so just to show what retail thinks about the tax :

gospodarka.dziennik.pl/news/artykuly/512700,handlowcy-podatek-obrotowy-podatek-handlowy-ministerstwa-protesty.html

According to Jaśkowski, domestic traders are angry because they counted on preferential treatment. More specifically about creating a level playing field between them and the large retailers run with foreign capital.

As predicted, this tax will do nothing but harm Polish customers and Polish businesses. PiS couldn't care less, as they couldn't be bothered to even meet the retailers. Why would they care, when they only care about themselves and their very high paid government jobs?

You mean of course President Komorowski, someone far from hated and someone who might be expected to attend a war remembrance ceremony without tasteless heckling from PiS cult supporters.

I still found that to be one of the most upsetting things in recent history. How *anyone* could whistle in the face of people that fought man to man for a free Poland - along with surviving what came after... no, I don't get it at all. Even if you hated Komorowski, it wasn't the time or the place to do such a thing.

I don't know Warsaw well, but wasn't it in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier as well? :/

News / PiS to impose blanket retail tax in Poland [291]

Still waiting for a source for that claim.

It's an old article, but I can't imagine things have changed that much.

From the start of its operations in Poland, Biedronka has relied on Polish products and domestic suppliers, according to JMD executives. Today Polish producers provide more than 95 percent of the goods on Biedronka's shelves."Eleven years ago we set out to provide Biedronka customers with Polish goods-goods made from the best ingredients and by the best producers," said Pedro Pereira da Silva, CEO of Jeronimo Martins Dystrybucja. "We want Polish brands to stand for quality and taste. This philosophy is producing excellent results and translating into growing sales and confidence in our products."

You'd probably understand if you saw how loudly people were whistling and booing at him so he could hardly hear himself in the cities were he wasn't wining.

You mean how PiS sent a bunch of people to boo and whistle at the Warsaw Uprising commemorations every year, upsetting the participants of the Uprising?

News / PiS to impose blanket retail tax in Poland [291]

But again, most business (esp ones with large constant turnover) usually run on very small margins which can easily be wiped out by small changes in the tax codes or small downturns in their customer base.

Indeed. Tesco in the UK is a fantastic example of this - they did nothing wrong as such, just a slight change in consumer habits caused them to lose an astronomical amount of money. The typical short-sighted PiS thinking is that if a business is profitable today, it will be profitable tomorrow and so can be taxed to pay for short sighted policies. The pathological hatred that PiS have towards large private companies is also very very clear.

Nothing PiS has done (or is likely to do) will accomplish that.

PiS have no interest in encouraging the Polish entrepreneur. It goes against what they stand for, which is centralised planning and control over society.

News / PiS to impose blanket retail tax in Poland [291]

Delph is only worried about the "poor" foreign corporations who may have to ever so slgithly shave their profit margin.

I'm not worried about them, I'm worried about the "ordinary man" that will be screwed by the increase in shop prices, decreases in profit for suppliers and who will have to pay more to access banking services.

I can jump in my car and shop where I want and bank where I want. Many others don't have such a luxury, and they're the ones that will massively lose out.

At the end of the day, this retail tax is going to subsidise wealthy PiS supporters with 2 or more children while ensuring that the single mother that earns minimum wage will go without. Disgraceful.

Better to pay more tax than to make more debts with EU or take away from pensioners or single parents.

1) Taxes have been increased
2) Pensioners will lose about 30% of their pension due to the PiS plans
3) Single parents will lose massively if they only have one child and they earn minimum wage
4) Pensioners and single parents are the most likely to use their local bank for convenience, which is normally PKO BP - which has increased fees due to the tax.

Pull the other one.

No, what we're saying is that the laws have been poorly drafted and won't achieve their aims.

The most sensible and straightforward thing would have been to increase VAT if they wanted to raise revenue in order to provide wealthy middle class families with extra money while depriving the working poor.

News / PiS to impose blanket retail tax in Poland [291]

Clear to me that nobody in the govt has any idea of unintended consequences or of economics - the law looks it was drafted by a sophomore student.

The funny thing is that it probably was, given the pechant this government has for hiring young boys to run important departments.

They seem to believe in the silver bullet theory of policy making.

Rather reminds one of the average Five-Year Plan.

or pass the extra charge onto their customers

Which is exactly what they will do, or they will squeeze the suppliers. There's already one influential retailing association in Poland pointing out that even if the government tries to impose price controls, suppliers will simply be told to cut the cost by the amount of the tax, or retailers will simply sell a slightly different product size. I'm reminded of what happened in the UK in 2009-2010 - prices didn't go up, but the size of the product simply changed.

even KOD that at the moment is just a laughing stock and we just need to make sure to keep it that way.

Laughing stock? The last demonstrations were reported pretty much worldwide, and we've seen that the European media is lapping it up.

Rubbish candidate has a rubbish campaign, simple, I wonder how many PO voters think otherwise.

The problem with Komorowski was that he tried to go it alone. Most PO voters were equally bewildered as to why he did it - you could really see that his campaign had no energy. I remember being absolutely confused that he was spending so much time in places where he won by huge margins anyway. I'm on friendly terms with one PO leader in a small town in Wielkopolska, and he told me that he couldn't understand why Komorowski turned up there when PO were massively popular in the town and PiS were actually behind the PSL in terms of votes.

Why are you making the same mistake that KOD = PO? It's pretty clear that PO aren't behind it to me.

Just in case, so the disease doesn't spread.

Finally, a PiS voter that admits that KOD represent a threat. ;)

They are not stupid like PO who lost both elections because the were over confident and did nothing about it.

A lot of PO supporters still haven't forgiven Komorowski for that utterly rubbish campaign. I was looking at the results a few days ago, and you can really see how Duda's strategy of visiting everywhere he could paid off - Komorowski just turned up in PO heartlands and nothing more.

It's the same reason why KOD will never flourish if we don't start getting different towns involved. Putting thousands on the street of Gdańsk/Wrocław/etc looks good on TV, but it's not enough.

Internally (in Poland) they mean nothing

If they meant nothing, why has the PiS-controlled media spun so much hatred about them?

but the damage has been done and all our opponents and enemies will use this mess to work against our national interests, be it on CO2, Russia, NATO bases or anything else.
