News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

Neither Poland was a laughing stock

Under PiS, yes, it was.

I think you'll find they took the country back 30 years in the eyes of most observers.

Life / Worlds most liveable cities (Krakow or Warsaw don't even hit the radar screens) [104]

Dublin. It is a very clean and friendly city. I went there, and people have a lot of energy and enthusiasm

Friendly, energy, enthusiasm - maybe, but clean it most definitely is not.

You must have been lucky!

Returning to the topic, PWEI

The topic by the way is most liveable in city, not the relative merits of countries and their costs of living.

Love / Polish women USED TO BE much more attractive: [162]

Probably controversial, but just looking at it from a diferent angle, when I was in Poland (twice in the last 6 years) I couldn't help noticing how many underweight women there were. I'm talking protruding hip bones, skeletal jawlines, unnatural gaps between the thighs etc.

If this is so, any gradual increase in curves or bulges that may be happening will certainly be more noticeable in comparison.

Food / What's your favorite Polish beer? [870]

Maybe there is something wrong with my tastebuds but to me e.g. Lech, Tyskie & Zywiec all taste pretty much the same ?!

Nothing too much wrong with them mind you : )

News / Poles -- Europe's very best? [21]

The biggest Polish mistake is the inferiority complex where they see things as better or worse, rather than using the word 'prefer'

VERY true.

Life / Your Polish friends - why do you regard them as such? [41]

Why? Loyal, open, non-judgemental, funny, perceptive, great hosts and if necessary, would drop everything to come to my aid and often at considerable inconvenience to themselves. Great couple.

Life / Getting ripped off in Poland! Is it normal? or should it be tolerated? [97]

I would certainly go down the river with them.

+ 100

I have said a fair bit about Poland - good and bad. Probably mostly bad on balance. I apologise now for a lot of it.

Customer service aside, the best thing about Poland/Polish people by far is their loyalty. This might fly in the face of some other comments but this has been my honest (if limited) experience. Very straight, loyal, no BS people.

Life / What is the reason for POLISH jokes ? [486]

Ha ha ha - this guy gets better all the time!

Keep going chief - plenty of webspace left to embarrass yourself with.

Edit: Oh he's gone. Ah well.

Language / Polish nationality insults in Polish? [67]

about as many English "insults" towards the Dutch

I wouldn't worry about it - the English have insults for everyone! ; )

Language / Polish nationality insults in Polish? [67]

Wyjść po angielsku - to leave a party without saying good-bye to anyone.

Many variations on this one - the English say "to take French leave" LOL

Language / Polish nationality insults in Polish? [67]

17th century yet you can still find traces!

Yeah - don't know about Britain, but in Ireland, Dutch courage is the only one that is in regular use - it's not even that common. Double Dutch maybe but it's a bit quaint/old fashioned.

Probably need to probe the Germans and Russians further to get phrases based on Poland!

czeski film

As in something that's crazy or illogical? Makes sense then. Not so sure about the films but certainly the animation!

Language / Polish nationality insults in Polish? [67]

1. Going Dutch: paying seperately when going to a party
2. Talking double Dutch: talking gibberish

Also Dutch courage (artifical courage from alcohol)
& Dutch uncle (a term describing someone who provides "tough love" type of advice, harsh but well meaning criticism etc)

I've certainly never heard any negative connotations or insults based on Polishness though.

Off-Topic / How would Poles react to a visit from Queen Elizabeth? [72]

if he came on and spouted the usuall one sided ill informed crap about all oirish being jolly fiddle playing romantic oppressed revolutionaries and all english as effete devilish imperialist murderors then no one would have called him out.

Well all I can say is that I would have - given that he is not purely a troll generally.

Obvious trolls like this Ireland4ever I would generally just ignore - or try to.

Goes without saying maybe but the converse stereotyping is equally offensive and inaccurate - that the British military are all noble brave principled soldiers facing up to an utterly ruthless, reckless and cowardly enemy that "only" (as hague said) murders women and children. It's just rubbish. The actions of the IRA (and the rest) are indefensible and the vast majority of Irish people think this way. Problem is, it seems (note seems) to me that many do not realise that the British military have plenty of civilian blood on their hands too - including, yes, women and children. And I'm not talking "history" here - I'm talking 20th century.

But I suspect that you accept that.

The whole thing has been unspeakably nasty to the core, on all sides. I'm only glad that things are much better now.

Ok,so if you dont agree you are either a troll or mental

No, and maybe there is a misunderstanding, but look again at hague's posts and tell me honestly that it is not simply trolling?

I love the way if something doesnt fit into the stereotype of poor oppressed oirish folks and evil nasty englishmen...well,it must be trolling

This, is just mental.

Are you actually serious?

And how this thread changed into a thread about Ireland ?

No surprise there. I mentioned the "I" word in the opening post to give context. Shouldn't have bothered.

Why do you ask?

Just wondering. Is she viewed as almost a celebrity or as the same as any other head of state or with complete ambivalence etc etc or what?
