USA, Canada / Travelling to Poland from the U.S. on a expired Passport [43]

Don't count on it. The rules have changed recently in regards to the US - I'm sure that a valid passport is now needed to re-enter.

greencard only is needed, it's considered valid ID if you've got a second form of ID, like a drivers license.

How about a drivers license... or birth certificate

For an international flight, they need a passport US or Polish. You might be able to get away with an expired one, but that depends on the person working the counter.

Good to go is relative. The man at the border can make it difficult for you...but if you just explain the situation, it shouldn't be a problem.

Disclaimer, don't complain if you get locked up in a little room for a couple of hours.

They do have to let you in though, you're Polish :)

Travel / Coach Krakow to London [8]

Orbis used to have coaches, and there were other firms. But most people now use cheap airlines to get to Poland.

skyscanner is showing easyjet and ryanair are cheaper than the bus :)

Life / Which cities in Poland have the most expats, and why? [34]

As for the entrance tests? Needless to say, I've heard quite a bit of gossip surrounding the integrity of such tests. Given that the Polish education system has huge problems, would anyone be surprised if people were bribing their way in?

Not sure about Poznan, but the Medical University in Wroclaw uses a committee approach. Doctors from around the world judge an applicant. For US applicants, MCAT results are required. Apparently they're not hurting for applicants either.

News / MORE ANTI-POLISH SENTIMENT IN GERMANY [280]

4. I never saw a Jewish Comedian working in Germany making fun about Jewish stereotypes. You are right about that at least.

News / Poland liberalizes drug laws in effort to focus on treatment [35]

Always the question of, if permitting drug use, will the nation become a society of addicts?...I say, even if legalized, only maybe 7-8% of citizens will regularly use these drugs...Many legal pharmaceuticals are much more deadly.

In the countries where decriminalization and legalization have taken place, there hasn't been an increase in users.

Legalize it all and enforce the laws that are in place to prevent people doing harm to one another. Problem solved.

News / Polish journalist charged with insulting Belarusian President [16]

Seriously? Interesting, and E.U. allows this?

Yup, a couple of countries have the same laws.

Regarding the rest of the post, most people are too lazy to seek out objective information. Laws restricting freedom of expression towards certain members of society end up creating an environment in which more and more speech is restricted for the "common good".

Life / A little over $10,000 and wanting to move to Poland ... any tips?? [18]

yes exactly how i had calculated... as a matter of fact, correct me if i'm wrong but i got this from a website on some cost of everyday living... is it even a bit accurate??

alma24.pl has prices, it's on the higher end of prices....but hey, they deliver...

@convex: language school sounds like something of my interest to prolong my stay. by enrolling i will be learning a language of choice, or just Polish??

Might be difficult (and costly) to get that going. A buddy of mine just recently got his two year by signing up for a Polish course. If you were to say sign up and decide it wasn't for you after the first month, that page in your passport doesn't disappear...

@scottie1113: yes i was aware of this, but how is it that many colegues have pulled it off living year round in europe?? i mean, i could only imagine that it would be sort of like here in the States, that if you get caught, they just send you back no??

Stay legal, it's not that expensive, and brings peace of mind. If you're here illegally, they can detain you until they put you on a plane. Not the best way to leave the country.

In PL you tip only for exceptional service.Of course if you tip people they are more helpfull than when don't but it's not a rule like in the US.

I tip for good service, pretty healthy tips at that. It tends to turn good service into great service.

Life / A little over $10,000 and wanting to move to Poland ... any tips?? [18]

As an American in a Schengen zone country, you'll only be allowed to say for 90 days unless you have a job and get a work permit, etc. I really don't see how that will be possible for you, but enjoy your three months!

Or enroll in a cheap language school and get a two year Schengen visa.

Life / A little over $10,000 and wanting to move to Poland ... any tips?? [18]

Not really. I mean, don't let me dissuade you from moving to Poland...but, there is a much larger demand for English speakers in the service industry in Prague (tourism and the large expat community). Housing costs about the same as in most big Polish cities.

Life / A little over $10,000 and wanting to move to Poland ... any tips?? [18]

depends on what you want. you can buy in to the "lifestyles of the poor and starving", aka "student life", for about a year. no polish, no work permit, service industry...well, good luck. on the flipside, it's not impossible, just a bit more difficult here. you might have better luck in prague.

Life / How Safe Are the Polish Cities? [179]

u had a phone. why didn't u phone your friends ?

shush you...

Wroclaw, you know how many times we've been beatup over here....

The only time that I've ever had problems was with people of a bit darker complexion....and after over two years, that's it. Nothing more than a couple of punk ass racists. The ratio is about the same as in the US or Germany....

News / Poland - Third World Country?? [300]

That was an unregulated business environment with close cooperation of the state and a lack of a functioning court system. Hong Kong would be a better example in my opinion.

The dole scroungers who could get off their arses and find work, not much sympathy there. Those incapacitated by health problems or temporarily removed from the job market because the closure of the local factory has ripped the heart out of the local community? Different matter, and those people deserve, at the least, our help.

And we should give it to them. More money in my pocket means that I can help my community better. One has to ask of course, why did the factory close down? Products no longer needed? No longer competitive...and if so, why? There are plenty of people with capital and good ideas who would invest if they even caught the scent of profit.

Yes our economy needs more strengthening, specially when it comes to jobs and infrastructure. We need more FDIs, and that is possible if our government pays more attention.

Poland needs real FDI, not just attracting companies based on handouts. The successful companies are the ones that are homegrown and provide an excellent product, not those that come to Poland because of cheap labor and tax payer handouts. Why in gods name should we pay to work?

Travel / Visiting Poland in May - what should I bring? [28]

If i'm right, the limit for alcohol is 3 1.5lt bottles. Correct?

for spirits, it's 1L, beer and wine 2L

yPoles like stronger beer...

Pretty much the only thing consumed here is watery drink. All the best selling beers are pale lagers.

News / POLES FEEL LIKE JEWS HAVE TOO MUCH CONTROL IN POLAND - TRUE? [209]

Poles in on it, too...

No doubt...

and then there's the marshal...

pil

The only people that think that Jews have too much control in Poland is a small minority of people. Interestingly enough, they also compose a huge chunk of the racist anti-immigration crowd as well...

News / Poland needs a left wing govt. [111]

As far as I remember, Thatcher's policy resulted in the loss of a million jobs in primary industry but favored a modernized economy focused on secondary and tertiary industries where about two million jobs were created. However I agree that some minimal protective measures, such as minimum wage for example, were not secured by Thatcher. It made her policy over the top for some.

She made the difficult decisions to correct the mistakes which were created by Attlee's government years before. Poland needs the same in order to get to the point where it can afford to implement socialist policies (and then eventually reform again to pay for them some time down the road).
