Love / Wedding in Poland's Pałac w Ostromecku! [6]

Sounds expensive. So it isn't okay to hope the bride's family pay for some of the stuff?

If you've booked it without discussing it first, then you might well be in the deep stuff.

That place looks pricey.

Love / Wedding in Poland's Pałac w Ostromecku! [6]

Can anybody give me some advice?

Yes. Prepare to pay for everything and watch as the Polish relatives get absolutely obliterated at your cost.

News / Does democratic Poland guarantee it's LGBT citizens respect for human and civil rights? [1169]

Entire loos at Target have been created to accommodate that miniscule sub-group of a sub-group and discriminate against the healthy majority who want men to be men and women to be women.

Polonius, how is it discriminating against others to provide extra facilities? Do you also feel discriminated against when you see disabled toilets?

the healthy majority who want men to be men and women to be women.

I imagine the majority couldn't care less.

Life / Poland is safe to visit - "Daily Mail" [100]

Thank goodness there are so many independent media outlets.

The Daily Mail is not "independent" in any sense of the word, and it's one of the biggest internet media outlets in the world.

Life / Are there many crypto-Jews in Poland? [67]

Why would they lie?

Lyzko, it's worth pointing out that many people in Poland might have some Jewish origins but don't consider themselves Jewish - they are normally identified as non-religious Poles, just like many others. A lot of them will have been baptised Catholic, as well. I know one girl in Poznań like this - the only giveaway is that her name is geographical in nature, which goes back to the Jews being forced to take last names and thus just taking names after where they lived.

Life / Are there many crypto-Jews in Poland? [67]

Well, apart from John Godson, how many non-POLES serve or have ever served in the Sejm? How many professing Jews?

Not many professing Jews (has there been any in the 3rd Republic?), though some had Jewish origins. There's a chap from Zambia in the current Sejm who is a decent guy as well, and there's always at least one member of the German minority in the Sejm. I think there's been some from other national minorities as well.

there is enough Jews in public life in Poland, don't you worry - they are by far overrepresented there

Not really. Some might be the children/grandchildren of secular Jews, but they are Polish first and foremost.

Study / Vistula University in Poland. Any experience? Any student? [57]

Hey, Vistula, your marketing department needs to be fired. Need a real professional to look after your social media? ;)

Hi) Can you help me i don't know which university i should choose Lazarski or Vistula.

Neither. You should attend a real Polish university, not one that is only a "higher school".

News / Russia says: WE'LL NUKE POLAND [150]

So maybe if Russia withdrew from Ukraine NATO would withdraw from Russia's borders ?

Poland in that case is screwed.

News / Does democratic Poland guarantee it's LGBT citizens respect for human and civil rights? [1169]

I would argue that our culture and society has more in common with Slavic Eastern European countries than more Germanic central Europe.

Really, it doesn't. Polish law is based heavily upon Napoleonic Law rather than the Russian legal traditions. Poland culturally has been quite close to France and Italy, and in business, Germany. In terms of religion, again, Poland is far closer to the Catholic Germanic traditions than the eastern Orthodox traditions.

News / Anti-Corruption Bureau investigates Warsaw city hall [69]

CBA agents have been examining documents at Warsaw city hall as a result of audits

Strange that they should do that a few days after Warsaw made it clear that they will respect the judgements of the Constitutional Tribunal, isn't it?

Law / Your experience as a foreigner running a small business in Poland [43]

Polish taxes are considerably higher however if you have a clever tax advisor it can be avoided legally! :-)

You will of course be aware of the recent decision by the government to impose financial punishments on those avoiding tax?

Life / Father moving back to Poland - about half way between Rzeszów and Ukrainian border [6]

somebody told him he should have waited until the Syrian refugees situation gets settled. It may just be fear mongering, or are they really coming in from Ukraine?

A handful are trying, but it's minimal. At least on the Ukrainian border, Poland has a deal to send them back to Ukraine, where they get kept in pretty dire and miserable conditions, hence it's not worth trying. The green border is also monitored heavily on both sides, so you're really speaking about minimal numbers.

News / Poland directly threatened by ISIS. Do Islamists planning terrorist attacks in Poland? [390]

The only genocide was of Serbs committed in the valley prior to July 1995. The figure of 8,000 Bosnians dead is simply impossible because there simply

It's not impossible. There's plenty of evidence that shows Srebenica happened - the only question that we had up until recently is whether Srebenica was an act performed by the VRS alone, or whether it was backed by the political leadership. Karadzic's conviction confirms that it was indeed an act of genocide led by the political leadership of the Republika Srpska.

If you know anything about the Bosnian War, you'll know that by the time of Srebrenica, Milosevic was pushing the leadership of the RS into a permanent settlement. I'm pretty certain Serbian intelligence knew about the impending Operation Storm and had passed it on - meaning that the RS had to try and consolidate their territory within Bosnia before the inevitable defeat in the RSK. Srebrenica was in effect a play to try and secure territory, and to do that, they had to eliminate the Bosniak forces.

You have got to be kidding me.

If there was, the Serbs and Croats would have dealt with it by now. It's not exactly a big secret that they're watching the Bosniak plurality like a hawk.

All the top Al-Qaeda dudes including Bin Laden himself had Bosnian citizenship

That's pretty much meaningless, because those citizenships were either revoked or in the process of being revoked. They were awarded during wartime and in a situation when the Bosniaks were struggling to survive.

Bosnia was the cradle of European Jihadism

That's like saying Northern Ireland was the cradle of Catholic terrorism. Numbers were comparable, after all - about 200-300 men were estimated to be on active service in Northern Ireland for the nationalists, and a similar number in Bosnia.

Back on topic please

Life / Number of church attendees in Poland [54]

And the result is completely different of your bullsh1t lie. Indeed half of the respondents attend regularly church services, and this number had been stable for the last years.

Except those of us living in Poland know that CBOS tends to get polls wrong due to the polling methods used.

Life / Number of church attendees in Poland [54]

And weeks later, PiS had the biggest victory ever achieved in democratic Poland.

You do realise that it was the electoral mathematics that caused that and not any real support for PiS? Less than 1 in 5 eligible voters voted for them, while over 1 in 5 votes were disqualified.

News / The only three normal cities with any respect for humanity in Poland [99]

Generally, you let in "liberal Muslims" and some years later they or their children will blow you up

Same happened with the Irish in my living memory. I remember just fine how single Irish men flying/sailing into Britain would be taken aside and questioned/searched.

News / The only three normal cities with any respect for humanity in Poland [99]

It's your third time when you use this phrase today, we expect a bit more vocabulary from a native English speaker who is also studying English.

You're counting during your tea breaks?

for 3,5 years? ok good luck with that :-)

They're not exactly expensive to replace. Perhaps out of the reach of the average factory worker, but still.

News / The only three normal cities with any respect for humanity in Poland [99]

Given that the Polish pro-democracy movement shows no sign of going away, I suspect there will be no shortage of resources, or decent people.

More to the point, anyone that knows anything about projectors knows that it's turning them on and off that destroys the bulbs, not leaving them running ;)
