News / Polish Independence Day March in Warsaw. Is it going to be the biggest march yet? [1530]

The Americanization of Europe and Poland has been amazing.

The Americanization of you and your family has also been amazing.

take a hike around the town, especially in those districts where many Poles lives,

Which are those districts? I very much doubt there are specifically "Polish" districts in Berlin. By the way, the latest news from the life of Polish people in Berlin has been the following:

a) fire has been set to a homeless man (45) sleeping on a bench in Alexanderplatz, near the famous DDR-made television tower. One of the perpetrators was a Polish man (38) abusing alcohol, so his Polish wife told him not to come back home when drunk, the result of which was that he was aimlessly wandering around parks where he met the other perpetrator (23) and they both set fire to their homeless acquaintance sleeping in a park with whom they drank alcohol in this same park the other day. Court proceedings for the case are under way in Berlin.

b) a Polish woman was shot dead in Neukölln (or Nowe Kolno, a place which first was Slavic, then it became German and now it is mostly Turkish and Arabic).

if you were then tell us which American stores were there ?

And to that doubt Mazur is posting the picture of a Top Secret store for showing anyone who wants to look at them that he indeed was !

"Top Secret" is one of the brands of the solely Polish company Redan from Łódź which has been listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange since 2003. Other brands of that company are: "Textilmarket" or "Troll" (store of the latter one would have suited Mazur's interests much better than Top Secret, IMHO). Many Polish companies have an inclination for choosing non-Polish names for their brands. To be precise, these are not always English/American names, but quite often Italian - for example Gino Rossi (shoes) is a Polish company established in 1992.

I think the expansion of the English language in our country is not only a Polish phenomenon. You can observe the same thing in Germany and also the Germans do not mind (I once read the results of a German opinion poll in which most people said they did not mind at all). Several centuries ago the international language was Geek, then it was Latin, and then, tens of years ago it was French, so there is really no need to make so much fuss about. After all, you dear Mazur are a Polish immigrant who at home refuse to speak in Polish to your children or grandchildren, so where's the problem?

Travel / Visiting the Polish Balitic Sea coast in the Winter [30]

My choice would be Łeba (Leba). This small town is an old Kashubian town which was not destroyed during the WWII. It has tremendous large and wide beaches (the widest ones on the Polish coast, in my view). The place borders a national park.

Łeba is extremely crowded in summer, but it is definitely calm and quiet in winter. You may want to stay in the Neptun hotel, situated right on the dune (check for the hotel prices, however!). I was staying in Łeba about 15 years ago, though, so I don't know if the place has changed much since then.

Life / Expat Communities in Far-Western Poland [46]

If you starred out the world - Murzyn - you're even a bigger idiot that I have thought.

With this I can fully agree. It has always been an insolvable mystery of the PF why all members of the former notorious Brit Bullies' gang notoriously think that the word "Murzyn" is racist in Polish.

Yes, from Germany. I had no idea that Poland is more socially conservative overall than the Czech Republic.

If you are from Germany, I would recommend a book by Steffen Möller "Viva Polonia" in which he discusses the Polish mentality from the German point of view:

steffen

"Viva Polonia - als deutscher Gastarbeiter in Polen" ist mein subjektives Porträt der polnischen Mentalität. Auf 400 Seiten geht es um Aberglaube, Gastfreundschaft, Verschwörungstheorien, Liebe und vieles mehr.

----------------------------------------------------------------
For those German people who have never set foot in Poland, I would recommend another of his books:

berlinexpress

News / Man Charged in Escape Room Deaths in Warsaw, Poland [8]

and there was no emergency evacuation route

This is absolute disgrace. I think the establishment should have been checked for having an emergency evacuation route before the accident and not after it.

It is a classic example of incompetence that you may encounter almost everywhere in Poland.

News / Mass-media in Poland: which are left wing, right wing or centrist? [44]

if it shows Ziobro as being the third most trusted person in politics

Actually, it shows Ziobro as the fourth most trusted politician.

For me, this poll is about which person is seen most often on TV screens plus the high position (third) of Paweł Kukiz who is a former pop singer.

The relatively high position of Stanisław Karczewski makes this poll even less trustworthy.

Janusz Korwin-Mikke have formed an alliance ahead of the European Parliamentary elections due in May next year.

If you had asked me about the number of parties JK-M created, I would have been in serious trouble in counting them.

JK-M is nothing more than a political clown whose latest great achievement was fathering a child at the age of 72.

Law / Can a foreigner appeal against prokurator (prosecutor) decision in Poland? [11]

it is unlikely that another Court will overturn the decision of the first Court.

It is very likely and happens quite often. The court which may do it is called the Court of Appeal.
Then you may appeal to the Supreme Court against the decision of the Court of Appeal.

The above is basically common rule in every democratic country. In which country do you live, Terri?

The only person you can write to is Mr. Ziobro

This is highly unlikely that the Minister of Justice will take care of every case which is contested.

is it possible to appeal against prokurator decision ?.

You appeal to the court within the 7 days that follow the date when you receive the decision of the prokurator.

Language / Meaning of "w tern" in Polish [27]

do either of you have any idea when this j was dropped from words such as "armija"?

I suppose you mean 'armja'. The spelling was changed in 1936 when it was decided that:
wyrazy typu Maria pisze się przez i, z wyjątkiem po c, s, z (np. Francja, pasja, diecezja)

Many people pronounce Dania (the country) and dania (plural of danie) slightly differently and the spelling Danja shows that in writing...

In fact, most people, if not all, make this difference in pronounciation. Formally, the spelling 'Danja' should still be kept, even if it is against the above rule, in my view.

I've seen 'w tern' in some books

You could never see 'w tern' [w t-e-r-n] in books, you could only read this as 'w tern' whereas in fact it was 'w tem' [w t-e-m].

there are now two się's in the language that behave differently syntactically

What exactly do you have in mind ?

Indeed. I wonder if the term "spiritual development of a man" would have any sense in English once the term "rozwój duchowy człowieka" is an OK term in Polish

2. «w religii i filozofii: niematerialny i nieśmiertelny pierwiastek w człowieku, ożywiający ciało i opuszczający je w chwili śmierci»

Love / Wedding and adopting husband's last name in Poland [7]

she will be Justyna Talkowska officially and legally?

Either that or Justyna Gzik-Talkowska or Justyna Gzik. It depends on her choice.

So Miss Smith who marries Mr. Brown and then gets divorced from Mr. Brown is known as Mrs. Brown.

Unless Mrs. Brown has reverted to her maiden name, so she is Ms Smith then.

News / Poland blocks any action on climate change [569]

Or, you're just using that old Polish logic: Other people should follow the rules, but my case is special....

I seriously doubt that this is "Polish logic" only, to say nothing of "old Polish logic". This logic seems to be highly universal with the Anglo-Saxon world leading the world here ...

Yes, I'm sure jon357's job is not so necessary that some other people could not do it without the need to fly six times a year for the purpose. Again, a typical example of "but my case is special" or "I am sooo special, so shut up, you fool".

Genealogy / Mary Barnawich (?) - Is my great-grandmother from Poland? [28]

At this point, the famous "case" of Jedliga - Jedligowa - Jedligówna (jedli-gówna) comes to mind.
Or the "case" is incorrect as the correct forms would have been: Jedliga - Jedliżyna - Jedliżanka.
https://polishforums.com/language/owna-owa-name-suffix-72939/

Polish spelling would be Barnawicz, but it's not a common name, maybe it was Branowicz or Bronawicz? or maybe Baraniewicz?

Branowicz is possible, but Barnawicz is pretty unlikely as a Polish surname (the "br" group is OK, but the group "barn" followed be the "a" seems not; thus I would exclude "Barnawicz" as a Polish name or spelling; Barnawa is a name of Aramaic origin and Barnawski is a surname from Lwów, so the Aramaic origin seems pretty likely here as well).

News / Polish Independence Day March in Warsaw. Is it going to be the biggest march yet? [1530]

Look at those German 'ubermensch' protesting in front of Woolworths in 1933. That's an example of false pride.

Germany has changed a hell lot since the end of Warl War II as a result of that war and as a result of the policies of the Allied Forces introduced to the occupied country. Of course, there have been people who prefer not to, as in any nation. But you seem to dwell on stereotypes which are still widespread in Poland being the aftermath of the war. I may tell you about my one week long visit to Berlin this year after which my wife who is typically pro-PiS, anti-immigrant and has some not particularly pleasant experiences from her trips to the former DDR could only observe that people in Berlin were "very polite". Neither she nor myself noticed signs of Germany heading in the direction of a "muslim state" except perhaps for a quite a number of dark-skinned people around the district of Charlottenburg in the vicinty of which we stayed.

I could recommend to you reading a very good and a recent book "Deutsche nasz. Reportaże berlińskie" by Ewa Wanat. The author comes across a wide spectrum of subjects on contemporary Germany, ranging from the Protests of 1968 (a short, but excellent analysis of that in Germany in the context of the WWII) through the immigration of the 1960s to the wave of the most recent "Merkel" immigration. Some very interesting interviews with native Germans, Muslim immigrants, Polish immigrants in the book as well. Also, the author being neither German nor Muslim nor leftist nor rightist presents a very balanced views on the variety of issues discussed in the book. She makes an interesting point saying that the Germans have created immigrant ghettos in Berlin themselves by allowing them to settle in certain districts of the city only. Also, Ewa Wanat describes deportations of well-settled immigrants from Germany, too. She does not save the Germans critical remarks as well.

Thus, having read this book, you may end up enlighting yourself on many aspects of life in contemporary Germany in the contezt of immigration and may perhaps stop singing ad nauseam your highly stereotyping tunes describing Germans as if they were some strange species standing with one leg in the 1930s and in some Baghdad califat with the other.

They've used a demographic weapon against you.

You are hysterical over Germany becoming a Muslim country, really. Germany may at most end up with some admixture of non-European blood, but in the end this blood is going to dissolve in the predominantly European race as the laws of genetics teach us.

He stood against Austria, an occupying force in his country, others would refer to him as a freedom fighter.

Indeed, Gavrilo Princip shot the archiduke, a member of the royal family of the country which ruled over Bosnia against their will. It is nonsense to say that what Gavrilo Princip had in mind was starting the WWI.

The WWI was started by those countries of Europe (Austria chiefly incited by Germany) which thought about themselves as superior to others, but not by Gavrilo Princip.

Some crazy people in the so-called "rotten" West, however, still blame Gavrilo Princip for the outbreak of the war which is simply insane and idiotic.

He only killed a Habsburg royal family member as part of the struggle to free Slavic lands from the occupying Austrian force.

After the end of the war Austria followed his hate for the Habsburgs making it illegal for any Habsburg man or woman claiming the rights to the throne to enter the country and even wrote this principle into their Constitution. The ban has not been lifted ever since.
