News / World Record For Wroclaw: 7,000+ guitarists gathered in one place. (updated 2012) [18]

found this:

I also notice that the record figure is different. I'll have to check it.

It all takes place again today.

I have no idea how many will turn up as we have rain forecast for this afternoon.

note.

SouthMancPolak, you've quoted me from last year.

I'd like to focus on this year.

However, there is usually a great mix of talent on stage and they do play different songs too.

We may yet hear Stairway to Heaven.

Wasn't it last year?

Yes. It's been going on for about ten years.
The idea is to make it a worldwide event and create International Guitar Day.

This year was a treat because so many professional guitarists turned up.

I wonder if the 6,000+ realize who they played with and if the pros realize how many they played with.

There can't be that many members of the public, except in Wroclaw, who can say that they played Hey Joe with such a collection of guitarists as those who appeared on stage.

I was there and it was just amazing!

Unfortunately I couldn't get there. But they showed some of the event on the big screens, just before the Deep Purple gig started. I also noticed that a lot of those who had been playing in Rynek made their way straight to the Purple concert... guitar in hand.

With two great events, only hours apart, it was certainly a good day to be in Wroclaw.

News / World Record For Wroclaw: 7,000+ guitarists gathered in one place. (updated 2012) [18]

On Friday May 1st a crowd of thousands assembled in Rynek. Among them 6,346 joined a host of guitar greats to play Hey Joe. The record was easily broken. The most guitar players.. in one place.. playing the same song. But it didn't end there. They also played Smoke on the Water and had Steve Morse play along with them.

On stage leading the record breaking attempt were some of the great and the good. They included Leszek Cichonski, Stan Skibby, Steve Morse and a number of others from around Poland and Europe.

Later in the day Cichonski's band played support to Deep Purple. With him were some of those who had played in Rynek. The number of people at the Deep Purple gig was probably a record too. At least for a gig in Wroclaw.

Life / Why is cheating at schools in Poland accepted?! [155]

No. Homework is beneficial for students.

Only if it's an hour or so. The problem is that they are almost expected to learn at home.
I hardly think that it is right that the working day for adults is eight hours, but the school day, plus homework, can be longer.

you are implying some ''cheating culture''

It certainly exists.

Work / Salary expectations in Poland [373]

My friend owns a night club and has caught more than 50 Polish staff in 3 years stealing from him and his customers.

fifty is a big number. when one sees a bad pattern it's best to change the system. don't employ Polish staff.

or is there more to this. they are bringing in the customers, the wages aren't high enough for locals etc.

Language / Present tense, past tense, past participle in polish [34]

Marek,

from wikipedia

In Polish, it is constructed with an auxiliary verb być 'to be' in a past tense, third person only. It is now old fashioned, used only in the formal register. Example: Powinieneś był to zrobić You should have done it.

UK, Ireland / Poles do a U turn: England to Poland and then back to England again. [23]

"Charlotte McHugh of the charity said some of their passports had expired, but it cost a lot to travel to London to replace them so they were trapped."

Do I understand this correctly: Polish folk can't return home because they don't have a passport.

If so, it's bollocks. Polish folk can travel to the UK and back on their ID card.

So, the only thing stopping them is cash for a ticket.

Each school is different, as is each class. They usually start at about 08:00 and finish at about 14:00

i`m not sure of the above

It's on Grodzka (street), which runs alongside the river. Opposite Piaskowa Island. Near Hala Targowa.
The first photo seems to have been taken from the road bridge leading on to Piaskowa... and Ostrow Tumski.

Travel / Weird and wonderful sights in Poland [30]

Yes, they are. They are mostly in the city centre, but some of them are up to 1km from Rynek. Part of the idea is that you search for them and at the same time see parts of the city. I know where most of them are. Picture 3, above, is where they all live. And yes, I believe in Santa too.

Ossoilineum in Wroclaw is a beauty

This building is easily missed. Although close to Rynek, it is still out of the way. If you're looking for it... it is within 100m of Hala Targowa.
