That is a still from a movie titled The Brest Fortress.

News / American GIs troops finally in Poland and, thank God, there's more to come [480]

Pay no attention to this provocateur, his only task is to spread anti-Russian propaganda on the forum.

I know it might be strange down there, but generally speaking, Poland is anti-Russia. The idea of someone spreading anti-Russia propaganda is quite normal in Poland and isn't anything unusual.

Law / Polish/EU Citizenship by Descent [88]

We've already spent 8 years trying to get a Polish passport. This process is sooooo long and complicated.

You really need to get a better lawyer for a start. A competent, normal lawyer would procure all the relevant documents and apply for court rulings on your behalf, instead of telling you nonsense.

Stop being stubborn and contact the Jewish community in Warsaw. They will guide you better than we can, and they will almost certainly have contacts within the USC to be able to assist properly. They will be very familiar with the issue, and no doubt will be able to recommend specialists who understand historical issues.

Life / Winter clothing what to buy in Poland [5]

Sorry, I forgot to post a link - decathlon.pl

Go Sport often have interesting items too, though the quality can be hit or miss - go-sport.pl

Either way, you'll get everything you need from one of those two shops.

Your best bet is to go to the nearest Decathlon and look there for what you need. You should be able to pick up everything there - don't worry about brands, just look at what it can do and if it's comfortable to wear.

Having said that, you won't get all that for 600PLN. A reasonable pair of boots alone will cost you at least 200.

Law / Polish/EU Citizenship by Descent [88]

Does that mean that it's not legit?

Yep, it's essentially a historical curiosity, nothing more. If you asked the Lithuanians now to issue such a document, they would refuse to do it as he clearly wasn't born in Lithuania or occupied Lithuania.

About the USC - this is where you're better off having a good local representative to handle things on your behalf.

Study / INDIAN student applied at Warsaw University of Technology in Poland with some delicate questions [22]

Have you deliberately ignored that part when he was talking about scam that is going on?

I haven't ignored anything. PO and PiS are both guilty of handing out visas and residence permits like sweets to many poorly educated people that bring nothing to the country.

About fixing it - the problem is that the universities are heavily dependent on the money that they bring in. PiS aren't so stupid as to cut off a supply of cash to the universities like that, even if it means that we get flooded with Indians and Arabs.

Law / Polish/EU Citizenship by Descent [88]

You need the document from the Polish USC. The document issued by the LSSR is a complete fiction, though it was normal practice for those born in the territories conquered by the USSR to get such documents.

News / Hypocrisy, finagling and foot-in-mouth disease of Poland's "noble" opposition [13]

But the oppositon which lack the votes to recall anyone has already gone through most of the cabinet with futile recall campaigns prolonging the sessions and jacking up the maintenance bill.

You mean like how PiS did it constantly to the PO/PSL government?

And - oh look, PiS brought a vote of confidence against the speaker in 2014 - thenews.pl/1/9/Artykul/186618,Speaker-Sikorski-survives-no-confidence-vote

Where was your criticism then, Polly?

News / Should Poland's taxpayer money be used to finance illegal theatre productions? [53]

Question is about Duda and Szydlo.

Indeed, Tusk was widely criticised for it, and those flights stopped as a result.

People are widely remarking how Tusk can often be seen flying around on Brussels Airlines flights now, while Szydło and Duda need to have their own planes to take them around. Not to mention that one of the first acts of PiS was to order three very expensive new planes to fly them around.

But what's stopping them from just taking a train like a normal person would?

I'm also struggling to understand this. PKP Intercity even have special "business" coaches that are very comfortable and contain everything you need to work on the move. How difficult is it to organise the coach being attached to a normal train for the purpose of their travel?

Having said that, both Duda and Szydło have residences in Warsaw. Going home at the weekend is nonsense, their home is in Warsaw.

Law / Polish/EU Citizenship by Descent [88]

I'll have a think about this tomorrow, but from what I can see, there's nothing stopping his child from applying for Polish citizenship, which then makes your application a formality.

Have you actually applied for citizenship, or are you basing your opinion on what the lawyer has told you?

Polonia / Volunteers from Poland in Novorossiya [90]

Always on the same side in history.

Now now Crowie, there were some Poles fighting for Croatia against Serbs in the early 1990's. 8 were counted in the Homeland War / War in Croatia, with 3 killed and 1 wounded.

Law / Polish/EU Citizenship by Descent [88]

If the DOB on his birth certificate is correct, I would try and see if you can obtain an updated version of his birth certificate. I don't know what happened to the records from Vilnius - however, it should be enough to prove that he was a Polish citizen.

edit: OK, I checked, and you need to get in touch with the Urząd Stanu Cywilnego in the Śródmieście district of Warsaw. Contact details are here - usc.um.warszawa.pl/siedziby-usc/siedziba-usc-w-dzielnicy-r-dmie-cie

They should be able to issue a modern birth certificate for him, which will provide you with the proof needed of his Polish citizenship. The other documents aren't an issue, though if they're demanded, then you should find a way to get them corrected.

One suggestion is that his child (your parent) should actually apply for citizenship first, as it will make it straightforward for you to get it that way.

Law / Polish/EU Citizenship by Descent [88]

First you are going to need to figure out the issue are you of Jewish descent that lived in Wilno/Vilnius or of Polish descent.

You're confusing the issue. Ethnicity/nationality is separate to citizenship.

In the OP's case, they were Polish in regards to citizenship, and this is what is being discussed.

News / Should Poland's taxpayer money be used to finance illegal theatre productions? [53]

Polonius, please don't try and twist facts. The law was actually rushed through, as it went from the first reading to the final vote within 3 days, while the Senate (which was operating normally) and the President had plenty of time to analyse the law in question. Instead, they chose to rubber stamp it without amendment.

As for who supported the law, we know that the Minister of the Environment was currying favour with foresters and those living in forest communities with it. PiS are only backtracking now after the realisation that it's causing huge amounts of negative PR for them.

the ethnically cleansed cities of the Second Polish Republic after the war despite their Nazi collaboration.

There is absolutely no need for such a racist statement towards Lithuanians.

I didn't know you could actually submit an application directly to the president. How long does it take to process? Do I need to pay a lawyer?

No, no need at all, you just need to be able to fill in the form. I'm sure you could find someone to help you online for free.

msz.gov.pl/en/p/dzakarta_id_a_en/consular_information/polish_citizenship/application_for_polish_citizenship/application_for_polish_citizenship - here you are. There's actually a good chance that you could get it, especially if you explain the circumstances.

I'm not sure how I can ask Jewish community in Poland help me if I don't know anyone who lives there.

They are very helpful. Try warszawa.jewish.org.pl/en- explain your background and history, and I'm almost certain they will help. By all accounts, they're very supportive of people of Jewish descent from Poland.

Also, Vilnius is part of Lithuania now, isn't it? So maybe I should try the Lithuanian community? I don't really know anyone there either.

No, stick with Poland. Lithuania is much more difficult for various reasons, and I'm pretty certain that they won't recognise your grandparents as Lithuanian citizens.

We got the documents with the incorrect dob from the International Tracing Agency in Germany. Do you think there's some way to get them to correct it?

No idea, unfortunately. You could ask, but I have zero knowledge/experience of them.

Law / Polish/EU Citizenship by Descent [88]

I'm sorry about your loss.

I don't really know what to suggest in this case, although it seems to me that the lawyer should have been able to figure it out. In theory, you could petition the Polish courts to make a definitive ruling as to his actual DOB, which should then be entered into the Polish birth registry.

However, there is a glimmer of light. You can obtain Polish permament residency without fulfilling the residency requirements based on being of Polish heritage, and in your case, it should be awarded without much difficulty. You could then learn Polish to B1 standard while living in Poland for 3 years, which would give you the ability to apply for Polish citizenship.

I would also try submitting an application directly to the Polish president.

A suggestion - perhaps you could try getting in touch with the Jewish community in Poland and ask for their assistance?

Polonia / Volunteers from Poland in Novorossiya [90]

have you got any updates on these alleged volunteers, and how can you tell for sure, that all the men in the photo are Polish?

There are a lot of claims coming out of the DPR that Polish volunteers are fighting on their side, but nothing concrete. It's quite possible that a few turned up there, as splitting Ukraine between Poland and Russia is a dream of some in the Polish far right. At the same time, the DPR has accused Ukraine of using Polish forces there, so anything is possible.

UK, Ireland / London's POSK smeared with anti-Polish grafitti [150]

This suspect looks like the typical working class British yob who resents the diversity and competitiveness which Poles have brought to the UK.

Impressive that you can ascertain that from a blurry picture. Obviously you must be familiar with studying British men in great detail in order to make such a confident prediction.

Food / Pumpkin and Rhubarb in Kraków [15]

Another thing regarding prices, I've noticed that the price of citrus fruits varies all through the year with no apparent logic.

Worth a look at the wholesale price. These are the prices in Poznań - fresh-market.pl/ceny/ceny_z_rynkow_hurtowych/poznan - and almost every shop/market place will be sourcing their produce from here. If you check the website, you'll get your local wholesale prices there.

If you ever need to buy a large amount of fruit/vegetables, you can buy in these places too.

Life / Withdraw Europe money in Poznan [16]

It can be more than a couple of złoty. For instance, ING were charging a massive 6% on foreign withdrawals, so withdrawing 5000 złoty would cost you 300zł.
