Travel / Cost of "living" Zakopane (Tourist) [10]

ah right, you're comin in the summer, ya wont be skiing then so :)

Jaysus ya must be cultured or something, thought most leaving cert'ers went to Ibiza or Ayia Napa.

The time I stayed there I think I only paid €8 a night in a b&b yea 160 is steep but I suppose it's not so bad seeing as zakopane is meant to be the best of poland's winter resorts, although if I were you I'd try and rent a house/big apartment just coz 10 days of constantly eating out twice a day will bore the fúck outta ye.

Loving the Tyskie...best Polish beer, mighty stuff. feck the taebags, plenty of tae over here, bring taytos though, impossible to get decent small bags of crisps here :P

Looks like you'll have plenty to do anyway so you'll be kept busy...oh you're student cards aren't worth a fúck over here, I found that out the first year I was here, doesn't matter if it has EU or whatever written on them, ticket collectors on trains are for the most part pure spas and will try and get every penny they can outta ya, but fúck it like for a tenner a head you could prob get a taxi down & back and travel with a bit more comfort. contact the krakow tourist office they'll have numbers for renting big taxis to zakopane.

dont bother with the whisky man, as they say over here, you dont bring a stick with you if you're going to a forest, loads and laods of different vodkas to keep ya busy

anyway, eating out isn't expensive if you're coming with euros and if you're gonna be cooking & eating in an apartment then it's about a quarter of that again....which means more money for pints

david lad if you're coming with euros then you've nothing to worry about horse.

I went to Zakopane a year or two ago for a weekend, try as I might I couldn't even spend €100
pint is 7/8zl which is about €2
A dinner would be about €5

bring baked beans :) coz ya cant get them around here...well the big hypermarkets is all
and bring warm clothes, if you drink whiskey it might be hard to get anything decent in the shops...like you'll get the bog standard jameson but that's about it.

Bottle of vodka, less than 20zl, cans of beer are usually around 10zl for 4 cans..& that would be the decent beer.

train to zakopane, i think is around 30-40zl, but try and get a private company bus, trains here are fookin freezin this time of year and always full so hard to get a seat....if there's that many of ye, call some private hire minibuses in Krakow and hire it there and back, but then again since you're gonna be here for 2 weeks, you'd be better off renting cars or a minivan man, like Zakopane is nice & all, but after the first few days you'll run outta things to do, unless you're skiing.

bring DVDs and a scart cable so you can connect a laptop to the tv watch some movies now and again, they probably wont have a dvd player in the place and the only english language channels that you'll get are euronews/bbc news and that's only if the place has cable, which it probably wont if it's a holiday home, if I think of anything else I'll PM ya.

g'wan the cats

Ah yea
train company, rozklad-pkp.pl
bus company e-podroznik.pl

bus company is a cúnt of one..open them in google chrome and they're auto translate.....but yea, rent cars, way easier and you'll have more freedom to do stuff

Law / Nasza Klasa, rumoured to be up for sale for €130m [11]

27 million users

There might be 27million registered users but that doesn't mean that 27million actually use it.

The article was a long time ago and I'm guessing it was a PR released to try and stimulate some kind of investment rather than actually trying to sell it. Social Media changes pretty quickly and Nasze Klasa missed out when they had their chance. Facebook is trying desperately to keep it's users while Twitter & Tumblr are gaining more & more everyday. Does anyone remember Friendster, Bebo or Myspace, they were all bought for big money but it was too late, only a proper gobsh*t would even contemplate buying it.

It seems that facebook is everywhere at the moment but from what I've seen it's pretty much plateaued and unless it gets into Russia & China it's popularity will start falling away in the next couple of years, even as it is there's been plenty of press regarding "Leave Facebook" days over their dodgy security features.

€130m for that pile of sh*te? holy jaysus.
Link is pretty old though, anything more up to date on it?

Cannot understand why anyone would want to look up the people they went to school with that they haven't been in touch with for years.

-Oh look, Jarek W had a baby
-So did Agnieszka B, MAgda S, Sabina R etc etc
-yea, I seen that Asia has a nice LAnd Rover & a foreign husband and 5 babies too
-Hey, looks like Marcin B was in Egypt for his last holiday...

blah blah, who gives a crap what people you lost touch with 20 years ago are doing, you lost touch with them for a reason....the reason being they were boring prats to begin with :P

*runs & takes cover for making fun of the national institution that is Nasza Klase*

Life / Expats, do you use Polish language for most of time when you are in Poland? [12]

not really, most of my friends use me as a free lesson, that's fine by me, they usually provide the beer and food when I go around their houses. In return they teach me some po sląsku which is way easier than polish.

But I do use it in the day-to-day things like shopping/taxis/train stations etc

History / How Polish history is viewed by other countries textbooks [124]

If you answer that question successfully, you will find the key to promote Poland abroad

How about this...we're not as organised nor do we have nice drivable roads like our oft-misunderstood Germen nighbours, but at least we not cheese-eating surrender monkeys like the French (who robbed Tatar off us)

History / How Polish history is viewed by other countries textbooks [124]

In the honours history course in Ireland (Polish matura course) the only mention of Poland in our history books is the invasion of the nazis and then during tha Fall of the Iron Curtain. If you did music you might of heard that Chopin was Polish and Copernicus might have been mentioned in passing in Science and that's about it really.

Love / Culture of Polish people (searching for a Polish guy who is the father of my baby) [45]

If this goes to court he'll probably be able to use forum thread against against you as some kind of harassment.

You should hire a private investigator to find him and then begin court proceedings, won't cost much, you're in England so your sterling will go much further than if you were earning zlotys.

Anyway, i hope you you & your kid get the money that you deserve and that he doesn't get away with this terrible behaviour

News / An end to Drug Prohibition in Poland and EU states? [9]

yea, Polish weed is awesome.

Don't do amphetamine though, did them a few times back in my youth but I'm more into relaxing and being chilled out than that being all hyped-up and full of energy, but ya'know whatever floats your boat is cool with me.

here's hoping that legalisation is sooner rather than later.

News / An end to Drug Prohibition in Poland and EU states? [9]

Says here that the EU will not stand in the way if a member state allows for the legalisation of illegal drugs

encod.org/info/EU-READY-TO-END-DRUG-PROHIBITION.html

Think of all that lovely tax money that Poland could be making and think of all that sweet sweet weed we could be smoking legally

Life / Expats in Poland - would you fight for your new country? [105]

no way jose, if a war broke out, I'd be waving my Irish (neutral) passport & I'd be out of her quicker a teenagers first attempt at riding a hooker.

Call me a coward but I'd rather be alive than cannon fodder.

Life / Poland's Next Top Model (TV show) [73]

was it any better then the Amercian version with Tyra?

naw, tyra was the queen of b*tchiness to keep it goin, joann krupa was boring and none of the judges played the bad guy...no in fights and not enough rivalry between the contestants...oh and the constant product placement was horrid

Life / Poland's Next Top Model (TV show) [73]

Jaysus yer one is annoying with the yankie accent in the middle of her Polish

am I the only one that thinks its a bit retarded to get the public to vote in the final when there was no public vote before that. Obviously it's to make a few bob on it but still, surely judges with experience in the field would've picked a better winner than the public

Love / Polish women- submissive or dominant? [58]

Yea, I'd agree Polish women are bossy and dominant, causes lots of rows with my missus, not that I want to be the big cheese but y'know relationships are a compromise. I think Polish guys are a pushover for Polish girls though, I've noticed that since I moved her that usually the woman is in total control and most of the men are completely under the thumb. Wasn't there a thread a while back saying that domestic violence against men is the highest in Poland?

Anyway, what I want to say is that there shouldn't be any dominant sex in a relationship, all relationships are give-&-take on both sides and compromise to good and healthy for both parties.
