Travel / Polish people and their windbreakers on the beach [9]

its bloody cold and windy!

18 degrees and sunny today. A light breeze - a summers' day:) Have a ganders at the beach cams. No windbreaks in Sopot though as far as I know, because everyone's nose is to the grindstone :(

Poles, being natural born individualistic loners, prefer privacy, seclusion and isolation

Now that is absolute nonsense Pawian. Poles desire a crowd.

I have been with company, both in the cinema and the woods. Both times, people thought it perfectly normal to ruin our private scene. You can set up your stuff on the beach, and somebody will come and sit right next to you. On an empty beach. I kid you not.

It's a sicko Polish thing, and they are offended when I tell them to **** off out of it.

Poles by nature are not exhibitonists

Nonsense again!

Both of you are Polish and don't know your own nation :)

After 40 years of grey communism, Poles are shocking and wanton exhibitionists. There are good sides to this, of course:)

Food / Krówki -- crumbly or chewy? [5]

The best krowki is the original one sold in communist times. Still produced. Crumbly. Made in Radom I believe. Hard to get hold of.

This reminds me of another true story....

There was an American from a small town in the Mid-West working at the university, and nobody liked him (he was somewhat haughty and above it all). He asked some of the students what he should say in the local shop to get some of the local fudge (He didn't speak a word of Polish, so they wrote it down for him...)

He was back in ten minutes, out of breath and red-faced... the women in the shop had chased him out onto the street. I asked him why, and he showed me the piece of paper, on which the students had written..... "Prosze kurwa..."

USA, Canada / Do many Polish people in America hate Americans? [592]

Thanks Louisiania.

I for one know what you are saying. All I can say is that we Brits can be total ******** too. You are generalising a touch though?

I wish I was still in contact with some of the fantastic Polish buddies I have had in my life. Unfortunately for me, as a sentimental British guy, very few of them stayed in my life, as I didn't treat them seriously enough (Polish family, over friendship).

I would like to think that it's much of a muchness, live and let live and all that.
I am almost in a forgiving mood...... and if a certain babe is reading this......it ain't an apology... just maybe :)

But that is where you and me go wrong Louisania. This is not a forum or blog for those who feel.

News / Poland Parliamentary elections 2015 [1060]

Indeed, there are plenty of Platforma haters in Pomorskie, especially in my birth place Tricity.

Pomorskie region is predominantly for PO - your defintion of "plenty" is laughable. When you have something to post of substance, this forum will listen.

I have a bad news on that one for you, it will require a bit of cash to start with.

Unlike you Wulkan, who doesn't understand the concept of class, I don't feel the need to prove my assets to anyone. As a Spolka CV of 15 years standing, I did alright, but now will no longer accept subsidising the socialist state with their ridiculous charges for ZUS, so will only sub-contract.

If I have your kind permission, that is?

supporting PO today is not a sign of a particularly bright mind.

Let's compare IQ. I'm not particularly bright. Otherwise I wouldn't have moved to Poland 23 years ago.

There's a lot of fear among small business owners

Delph - my missus did things BY the letter, to her detriment, while her employees bought new cars etc, and they (Kaczynski and co) audited her THREE times in two years.

Total communist style scum. They found zilch. Not ONE zloty to pay.
And we wonder why decent people fear harassment, when all they want is to live their lives? Words fail me, but if this was not a "family" forum.....

USA, Canada / Do many Polish people in America hate Americans? [592]

Wow, I knew it was trendy to hate and ridicule Americans but this was thread was eye opening.

Crazy to make such a decision based on a forum such as this surely? I grew up with Polish visitors to my Polish "uncle" in the UK in communist times and was shocked at what I had, in comparison to them. Todays' young people are just as grateful for travel. So I don't get your point; sorry you have had some negative experiences, but why not try again?

News / Poland Parliamentary elections 2015 [1060]

it has been palce where sovietization of Poles progressed more than in other parts of Poland

LOL. Do you always talk about the past?

Pomorze is number one in the economic tables and has been for the last 20 YEARS. If more Poles move to the Tri-City, maybe Poland can build something here.

But PiS want the old communist idea of bringing work to the people.

Hopeless. The truth is the other way around, and you know it.

Holland, Norway, Germany, the UK.

There is ONE place in Poland that is actually normal in thinking, and forward looking, and it's Pomorskie region.

Glad to educate you on that.

A real patriot would stay and make things better regardless of who wins

Nonsense. A lot of my contacts are seriously considering their positions. They are high earners and can go where they please.

PS: I have just had electronic gates installed on my gaffe. If the PiS police come calling I will be away to set up shop in sunny Italy, and others who "can do" will likely do the same in countries of their choice.

It's all a bad joke. As if life wasn't hard enough here, we are now going to be harassed at every turn by a socialist government.

I will oppose them at every turn.

Classifieds / Warsaw nightlife guide needed (girls only) [5]

Von Braun.

My labrador is a babe magnet. You don't need girl "hostesses." The girls will come to you (or rather, the dog, but it's all the same).

I will send him with return ticket to Warsawa Centralna and he will lead you around Warsaw, as he loves pussies :) Although he will probably lead you to the parks where the boyz are :) Return him, as seen, and still uncorrupted in body, two days later, and there will be no charge.

Dougpol :)

Life / Poles hard working or just born lazy. [58]

I've heard stories about how people won't let Grandma sell her flat for less than they think it's worth

It's got to the stage with empty properties where I (almost) favour some government legislation - daft as it sounds. Nobody is EVER going to pay some of the daft prices being bandied around for (example) a flat in an old Silesia slum in Bytom.

Unless the buyer enjoys pain :)

Worth a thread on it's own. It isn't really OT Mods, because owning real estate is tied in with how hard we work, and ambition etc.... But as you are American, I don't have to point that out surely? :)

With the greatest respect

It has been well reported here, and it has been my observation over 29 years, that peeps have a ridiculously inflated worth of grandma's flat, or their old Fiat.

No offence - but I ain't buying :)

Life / Poles hard working or just born lazy. [58]

I often see that kind of picture on the Polish streets:

Lol - I have had the opposite experience.

My first night in Poland was Christmas 1986, and me and my girl were stood near the palace of culture, with a bottle and 2 shot glasses, watching ONE man with a jack hammer excavating the Warsaw underground all on his own.

He was a bloody good worker. I hear he's now finished it, only 29 years later :)

Poles are hard-working. Often not efficiently, but they put the effort in. The service industry is excellent value, but I wouldn't buy anything from a Pole that wasn't new.

The model of buy cheap and sell expensive is something I make a point of staying well clear of.

Travel / Free Transport in Warsaw - 'Car Free Day' [10]

Fantastic - but how many visitors and others wont know, so will still punch their tickets? There is always a lack of proper notification - a relic of communism.

BTW - London style "Oystercards" are going to be introduced next year Poland wide. And not a moment too soon. This punching of tickets in stupidly situated locations is a remnant of a totalitarian age, and for the convenience of the seller, not the fee-paying passenger.

Life / Legalising Marijuana in Poland. Therapy available? [76]

to get away from all the mess

Mmm... been on the booze all weekend - far worse for not cleaning Dougpol Mansions than a bit of waccy-baccy. The government want to tell everybody how to run their lives.

Outdated control. Nobody is listening.

Real Estate / EU national wanting to move and buy a house in Poland [41]

Real Estate / EU national wanting to move and buy a house in Poland [41]

Thanks Roger. Useful info there. I (think I) meant that pine burns quickly, but apple burns slowly, and I was thinking of a fire in the house (with the door open) and all the folklore effect.

My dog practically lies on top of that type of slow burning fire to warm his paws, but most hostelries obviously burn pine, which singes his whiskers, so he prefers hardwood, as do I ( the old yule-tide log and all those memories)

Real Estate / EU national wanting to move and buy a house in Poland [41]

trying to stay on topic ,, do you in your opinion think that Poland is a good place to retire to .

Interesting question Dolno - if you are the active type and can mend things, then yes. By that I mean, something is always going wrong with the house/flat - big changes in temeperature etc, and you might be digging the garden in your eighties still (great, of course..)

Health care is poor for the elederly compared to the UK though - no Day Centres, with the old mini-bus to pick you up for the day.

No real comraderie, except from the neighbours who know you, and "respect you."

So, no - if I had the money/choice, as a foreigner I would not retire here.

Spain for me is a bad idea. way too hot best just have a winter villa there

You are 100 per correct. As many an ex-pat has found out too late. I refer you to the film "Sexy Beast", where our hero (a London bank-robber) is retired on the Costa Del Sol, with his swimming pool. It's morning (around 11) and he emerges in his dressing gown to the pool with a glass of breakfast whisky in his hand. you can see that he has a big house, land, money in the bank - it's blazingly hot sun directly overhead. Absolute heaven supposedly. His opinion - "Another ******* blue day..." :(((

The monitor edited one of your comments, it has kind of left me in some suspense as to what you said. (hope you wern't using rude words).

Moi? Of course I was:) I can't help it if the American owner of this forum thinks it is for children :)

Yep I am the addictive type, so I won't try skiing cos i might break my legs like the motorbike racing has.

Actually, you wouldn't break your legs. I mean, you can break your leg for doing absolutely nothing (Polish ski slopes date from communism and you might just be unlucky) but it's great fun and if you live near a nice pub, it would be silly not to frequent the place. In the same way, mountains are there to enjoy.

from what you have said, u have been in Poland for a LLlooong time,

No - 23 years. As you get older the time flies by. I will have to move soon, otherwise they will bury me in one of those catholic cemeteries by mistake :)

shame about your neighbours get a cheap cctv system.

Keep your prize motorcycle wired up to some particularly nasty electrical current. I know I would. My (horrendously expensive) cycles are chained to floor bolts and I fitted a locking system where if thieves get into my garage, they won't be getting out again.

Then me and the dog will come down the stairs properly tooled up...... :))

Beskidy, thanks for the tip, I will give em a go.

Do - the Czech Beskidy especially. They have rigid planning laws and have not raped their countryside the way Poles do......

what does kark mean googled it no joy.

Snuff it/kick the bucket. All euphemisims for die.

Anyway its all a great adventure over here, beats the drudge and boredom of blighty, something makes me smile everyday.
(even if its my own sewage ending up in the cellar).

I really envy you. I can only live in industrial cities/centres because of my work, but would love to go wild, and pull up the drawbridge and put some more (apple) logs on the fire. Don't use pine. Absolutely useless in terms of calories, and bloody hard work, though you did say you love chopping wood :)

Life / Legalising Marijuana in Poland. Therapy available? [76]

If you where to smoke a joint at your home in Warsaw you would be in possesion of an illegal substance by Polish law which is a criminal act just like drunk driving.

I had the authorities round at my gaffe - some stupid probation law, as I was involved in a traffic accident and had to sign off on it being my fault. I didn't go to court, but had to "promise not to do it again" and to agree to probation. Really weird as it was not a pre-meditated act to hit an old biddy who walked out plumb in front of my car....

The probation officer came to my abode by appointment. His questions after some inane form filling were as follows:

1. Have you committed any type of offence since you were arrested 2 years ago....?
I've been using BitTorrent to download Hollywood films.....
2 Do you drink?
When I can....
Do you have a drinking problem?
Only when the shops are shut.......
3. Do you use drugs?
Sometimes. There is some marijuana in that pot right now. (There was of course).

After that he became ever more boring, so I had to order him to leave in the end:)

It's that time for mass disobedience again - but Poles are no good at that - they prefer to be controlled. If it wasn't so ridiculous I would laugh.

Yep, Nottingham born and bred. Without the accent, ducks. It were a grand summer, I'll give'ee that!

True winter kicks in end of October and it starts getting warm in March, this year i was out chopping wood in my tee shirt in feb.

edited

If you have a decent central heating system (and I mean proper self loading multi fuel job with a buffer tank) Winter is great

I know winters are great! I lived in Kato for 34 years and the Beskidy were my second home. I own half the shares in the old Zywiec brewery.....

Try ski-ing (or don't, if you are the addictive type) If I were a rich man, I would do nowt else. If ever you want to do a house swop......

When it snows all the roads are kept clear and with decent winter tyres you can go anywhere, last winter we drove to the Austrian alps, took 7 hours, it was no problem.

Ekky thump - I don't leave 'ouse in winter! Seriously, Poland has great mountains and I've never been to Austria, but it must be great. It's just that for my level of drinking and skiing, the Polish and Czech Beskidy have it all :)

Anyway, if you do'nt like the winter in Poland its cheap to buy flights to Spain or any other hot country to have a month or two break.

Well that's the thing......if the OP could stand the boredom, I reckon he could retire to the Canary Isles for about the same cost?

No worries if you are retired with no work to do.

Dangerous.....no work, and he could kark it. Better to keep busy, shifting that snow, or felting the roof, or watching the neighbours, to check they don't nick his stuff, as Wildrover used to complain of :)

Work / Lang Company fired me [17]

I have heard so many cases of "native speakers" being drunk or having severe hang overs while on their jobs

I refer you to Dr Frank (Bryant) in Educating Rita...

"Drunk? Of course I was drunk - you wouldn't expect me to teach this crap sober, would you?."

I had a rep for being smashed in weekend classes - because the prof insisted I take extra-murals, when Nottingham Forest were still in the First Division and playing Saturday afternoon. So I got my revenge by having a Saturday liquid lunch. Generally the day went downhill from there :) (Un)happy days!

PS Kedzierzyn-Kozle is a rat infested hell-hole and needs flattening. Whatever are you doing there? That's no place for the British - come up to Gdynia; plenty of work here for natives and Thomson Reuters etc :)

Good luck, Its a great place to retire if you don't need to work anymore.

weather,people,food, all good

Agreed about the people:) The other two criteria, not really. At all, in fact. A terrible place to retire to, weather wise.
But seeing as WarwickTiger is moving here because of the wee lassie, I don't suppose the cold climate and the fattening carbohydrates will bother him too much. Obviously he will be bringing the Scalectric set with him for those long winter evenings...?
