UK, Ireland / Polish woman caught up in London riots [20]

I watched the extensive discussion in the House of Commons and it would appear that major compensation measures are being proposed but I feel that the government's estimate of damages is rather, well, conservative. That Polish woman will be somewhat further down the ranking of preferential cases and may find that the compensation she receives is minimal.

UK, Ireland / Cultural misunderstandings - Polish and English [26]

As always with this type of thread, we need to be careful to avoid black+white labelling where it is uncalled for. For example, many middle-aged folk in Poland are far from being pushy in supermarkets. They move really slowly and are respectful enough of those around them. It's when they get older, they begin to think that nobody should be in their way.

It is generally true, however, when taken as a whole to say that Poles are pushy but it's changing. It's not as bad as it was.

Remember, Poles are a far more mixed bunch than they'd like to believe. They are not as homogeneous as the Japanese as there are far too many lone wolves in their culture.

So the politicians then? ;)

More seriously, they should be targetted but the people have had enough and I can see where they are coming from while not condoning what they are doing.

I wonder how much compensation will be given as people pay for those properties. She escaped but others might not be so lucky in the future. The Polish Embassy is undergoing a busy spell, I gather.

UK, Ireland / Worst of the worst Poles emigrating to Britain? [32]

You tend to feel freer in most foreign countries. Yes, you respect cultural norms but there is a certain looseness that comes with being abroad. Many simple ones cling rigidly to that which they know and feel they have more license to do so. It is fair to say that many accepted menial jobs early days, knowing that they could get 7200PLN for doing a 1000 pounds a month job. Even washing dishes could get you 800 pounds a month with good hours, thus around 5800PLN then. Bunch together in large numbers, eat cheap stuff and then there is a fair bit of disposable income to waste on beer (says he drinking a beer, albeit a top Ukrainian one, LOL). After a few beers, out come the kur*as and pathetic male posturing that goes on.

History / Why did communism in Poland fail? [180]

Right enough, yehudi. He died just 10 years before ideas of a Jewish homeland were being bandied about. Herzl started discussions around 1893, right?

As for communism in Poland, it had past its sell-by date. Certain world powers wanted it dismantled but, of course, Solidarity did their part from within.

I think it was the first wave that gave Poland a bad rep but you just need to ignore them. They probably can't afford the flight back to Poland ;) There are quite a few cretins around from what I've heard but they only paint one part of society, a part that most societies have.

Life / Theft of a Golden Mug in Poland [24]

The latest theft case involving Poles is in London. 2 Poles are being detained for suspected looting and shoplifting. Link? It's in Polish so I'm not going to post it but it's at onet.pl for whoever is interested.

Life / What do you like about Poland? [100]

The balance of modernisation (new buildings etc) and old-style architecture. Some striking contrasts whilst maintaining a Polish flavour :)

Language / Too many English words in the Polish language! [709]

We got our phrasal verbs from Old Norse and many words in the NE of either England or Scotland have Germanic language roots.

My wife has made me aware of many things as she studied English Philology. For example, an uneducated Pole will claim kiosk is a Polish word. It's neither Polish nor English. I believe it's Persian.

Language / Which language is easier for Poles? [43]

Nathan, do you pronounce £ as L? I know that Poles based in Lithuania pronounce it that way. She kept saying ladny instead of ładny. It's this way in the east of Poland too, I think.

Lough? Krk is Krakow's airport probably. Known to Poles :)

Yup, Czechs know Polish better than the other way around. The Poles are not that strong generally when it comes to other Slavic languages.

Cross-language efforts need a broader awareness and not this limited thinking where you narrowly-mindedly think only in your language. Poles often come up short in that respect. The connection is as easy as day for me :)

I don't use Silesian, no. It's not really used much in Gliwice. More in Chorzów or Świętochłowice. Again, awareness.
