UK, Ireland / Poles in Ireland by Peadar de Burca. They "turned their backs on a country that gave them" [195]

PoLish culture is a joke, it's basically the same as other eastern euope/russia

ya might want to look at an auld léarscáil mo chara, Níl an Pholainn san Oirthear na hEorpa tá sé san Eoraip Láir

Of course Polish culture isn't a joke, it amazes me the level of hypocrisy you do be sprouting, on another thread you're encouraging an Indian fella to move to Poland & tellin him to f€ck the begrudgers & racists and then a while later you come out with something as ridiculous as this.

It's no more a joke that Irish, Scottish, French, Mexican etc. cultures, of course there are similarities but sure jaysus you'd only be coddin yerself if ya thought that Irish culture was so different that british, our food is similiar, irish dancing aint a million miles form morris or highland dancing.

relax your cacks lad and stop the hating

News / "Shale Gas Revolution" will make Poland a Leading Country in Europe! [202]

will of course consider your severe apology

yea, I'll give you one when you provide some unbiased objective proof, as yet that hasn't been done.

I feel that you should be the one to apologise for comparing Gasland to nazi propaganda, especially considering where you are now, a bit insensitive of you old chap.

So again, I ask for links, this time unbiased ones from people independent of both the movie and the gas industry.

News / "Shale Gas Revolution" will make Poland a Leading Country in Europe! [202]

GasLand was a great hollywood movie that is being compared by some to Nazi propaganda as it is simply not true in almost every regard

links please, I severely doubt that Gasland has been compared with Nazi propaganda, put please enlighten me if you can.
I watch the movie quite a while ago for a review and I've not come across any flack surrounding it, are you tellin porkies?

And comparing it to Nazi propaganda on a Polish forum is a bit distasteful too, but as has been pointed out you're probably a PR worker trying to stir the brown stuff.

2. Bob Marley (best album: Legend - The Best Of Bob Marley And The Wailers)

american english? whaaaa?
Bob's a proper legend and all but his English was Jamaican not American:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamaican_English

I never tell people to listen to older music/read older books as they'll end up learning terms & phrases that were popular at the time and aren't used now.

I die a little inside everytime I hear someone say "How do you do?"

For Polish though
You can't be Kaliber 44 and some reggae like Wawamuffin, try some Fisz too.
Couldn't tell you about movies, I've only ever seen two Polish movies, one was Sex Mission and I thought it was crap, the other was Kanal which was very good

Life / How to instigate a row with your Polish missus. [15]

Step 1. Go here,

2. Ask missus..."Hey, Marie Curie was Polish?"
-Yea of course she was Polish...
-Marie is a Polish name?
-No, she married a French guy & in most European countries they call her Marie Curie but her full name was Maria Sklodowska Curie, they probably leave out the Polish bit coz it's too hard to pronounce.

-Ok, I see.

3. Go to her Wikipedia Page

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marie_Curie

4. Notice the year of her birth.

5. Go back to missus... "Are ya sure she was Polish?"
-Kurwa yea, stop bothering me & be nice on Women's Day....
-It just says on her Wikipedia page that she was born in Warsaw...
-bah, kurwa Warsaw...
-Yea, I know...anyway, says here that Warsaw was part of Russia....

6. Watch her explode.

7. Run anyway and make some pancakes as a token of forgiveness.

Happy Womens Day ladies...and pancake day too

Off-Topic / How would Poles react to a visit from Queen Elizabeth? [72]

Yes. northern Ireland is essentially a communist state which is kept afloat by the brits money

man the way you come across you sound like a plastic paddy in yankville?

An increased IRA presence? Where, seriously what are ya on about? The ra aint got no guns anymore and the Rira and the rest are just a shower of drug dealers posing as paras.

How and ever, while you might be ranting and raving I do think that the Queen going to Ireland will achieve nothing. They tried letting the Orangemen march down O'Connell St and that ended in tears.

I just hope that some parade isn't planned, if she's gonna vist McAleese & they'll have some grub privately then I couldn't care less. It would be a nice gesture if she made some comments regarding peace. Britain has already apologised for the Famine, and yea most paddys would love to see a reunited island but Ireland hasn't been reunited since the scots came back to colonise their motherland in the 1600s as part of the Ulster Plantation. Would be really cool though if she made an announcement that they were gonna take the Irish harp outta the royal flag, they could replace it with the Ulster Red Hand if they really wanted to.....I'd love to see Gerry Adams face if that happened. (^_^)

War is over buddy, we've got peace now for the first time since the before the 1600s, people can travel across the border without checkspoints, we've got a joined rugby team and a joined soccer team will eventually happen too.

Faux republicanism doesn't help matters, actually the best thing a republican could do for his country now is to try and get or create (a) job(s) and get Ireland out of the dirge of debt that it's in.

Life / 'Whites only' nightclubs in Warsaw? [51]

"Six African and six white Polish males were used in the study, all between 25 to 35 years old. The men were also all dressed similarly - in blue shorts, dark sweaters, dark trousers and smart shoes".

While refusing entry to someone over their race is a disgrace, I would refuse entry to someone wearing shorts and trousers....except for Batman.

well, nightclubs don't let averybody in... it happened they were black... how many whites they didn't let in that night, did they check that too?

didn't bother reading the link did ya? :P

UK, Ireland / Irish Times: Irish workers warm to Poland [24]

Its hard these days to get a good pint of Genius in Dublin

hahhaa, go to the 51 pub, all the auld lads drink it there, it's amazing.
I now 2 places in Kato that have good guinness, they keep the keg under the counter so the line is short and it keeps the pint tasting frech

Food / Polish fast food joints? [59]

Served to you by Mexicans that barely speak English

to Irish people that don't speak.....oh wait.....err...beagnach a rinne mé botún ann :P

ah but for Paddy's Day anyone and everyone can be a paddy and rightly so, although the idea of shamrock shakes and green pints of stout is just kinda wrong....stout has to be the colour it'[s meant to be.......which reminds me that I need to organise getting the day off work.

but back on topic, yea those zapikanka yokes are magic, especially in the old Jewish part of Krakow

Life / Polish migrants & expats in Poland? The Polish market would be flooded. [9]

would increase competition in the job market

competition is always a good thing for employers in a situation like that.

But why would anyone want to return to Poland to work in a similar job that they already have in Ireland, uk, etc where they're earning far more money?

I'm certainly not here by choice and if I could've got a job in Ireland, doing what I'm doing now, I'd be earning a hell of a lot more & would've had no reason to leave.

Until the wages in Poland come up to a competitive level with the jobs that are offered to Polish graduates abroad then the "brain-drain" will continue. I feel that it may be some time until that happens. The wage to work ratio in Poland is pretty bad, you can work your hole off and still not earn a wage that's anything special, whereas in Ireland, uk, etc I think that companies offer far more rewarding wages to jobs that require hard work. Here it's expected that you should still work hard even if the pay is crap.

I feel that the problem lies with Polish employers who seem to treat their employees as requirements to make them money rather than valuable assets who can help them make more money....and changing a mindset doesn't happen overnight. If you take the Irish example, the roots of the Celtic Tiger can be traced back to the 1960s when Lemass was Irish PM, however, it wasn't until the 90s that everyone started to have some money in their pockets.

Language / Polish regional accents? [141]

well i don't actually understand how come Silesian could be much easier than Standard Polish

think it's coz if a word has a German element to it then it's a bit easier for an English speaker, them both being anglo-saxon langauges and all....or could just be me, coz I did some German when I was a young lad.

but neither are great in fairness (bud)

aye, I';m fairly happy with me bogger accent :P

Language / Polish regional accents? [141]

IYKWIM

no.... I had to google that :P

from what I can gather and this is a very simplified. Grammar is Polish, Vocab is heavily German influenced and letters are Czech, coz they have those funny symbols over some of the letters like you'd see in Czech.

It's a bit weird, some people here really like it and say more should speak it and then others think it's for rednecks and paupers.....I like it for the reasons that it's a helluva lot easier than Polish, people think it's cool that I'm learning both and I suppose coz it gives a stronger sense of identity to the Silesians.....but pierunie synek, I know I'll always be ino gorol :(

Language / Polish regional accents? [141]

The Dublin accent should be the height of aspiration

yaaarrrr, jayyzuz buud, 'ave ya gorra youro fora hostel :P

but I'd rather speak like someone from the north of the Liffey than some D4 ponce.

Silesian accent is kinda close to an Irish accent....there's a lot of stress on vowel sounds too, probably something to do with the Irish language and our love of vowels in words.

Then there's the Silesian dialect....although, I've been told it's a language and not a dialect....anyway, it's very different to Polish....far easier than Polish too. It's seen as a kind of hybrid of German and Polish but there's a fair bit of a Czech influence in the mix too.
