Life / Have many Poles had enough of one another? [198]

Now, while many Poles get together for drinks, work closely together in their workplaces, cheer on their national teams etc etc, I have noticed that there is a distinct apathy and even outright disdain in many places I go to in the context of interpersonal interaction. The infamous 'do widzenia na odpie*dol się' I have alluded to in the past is still ever present. No attempt to even look at those they are serving. The efforts to communicate in a range of places are light at best. I'm hearing more and more that Poles want to leave.

Shops are the best places to witness silent hostility (a nice paradox). It's almost like they don't want to acknowledge one another at all. I'm mostly in there smiling and putting out good energy but these creeps are just looking for trouble or sth to moan about. In Aberdeen, many local shopkeepers perk up when their favourite locals come in for a chat and to purchase sth but here, it's like 'oh, you again, what do you want?'.

As a teacher, I am in regular contact with a lot of people as part of my job. That entails listening to their various woes and I can see that it stems from their inability to be positive regardless. It's always the other person's fault. Being successful in your job means channeling your energy into it and not tiring yourself out with negativity. Sometimes it just takes one person to have the drive to instigate change.

That's enough for now as an OP.

UK, Ireland / Polish Family stabbed to death in St Helier. [40]

Believed the family was Polish, that's all it says. The BBC account doesn't mention that. The Telegraph does

Life / How many Jewish people live in Poland? [145]

Which anti-Semitic, MW? Ahmedinehad? For a start, he didn't say anything about wiping Israel off the map. Secondly, he is anti-Zionist, not anti-Judaism.

What I liked about your post was showing the different kinds of Jews rather than tarring them all with the same brush.

UK, Ireland / Is moving to UK now a good idea? - antipolish prejudice of the Brits [231]

Let's hear some stories of Poles who are in the UK then. JustyS was nice enough to give us her account. Her biggest problem? Other Poles. My wife's? Other Poles. My students who went there and came back? Other Poles. See a trend here?

I wouldn't be so sure, Alfred. I've seen quite a few Poles expecting special treatment. I'm glad those around me are thoroughly decent people whom I can trust and enjoy the company of. They will see as I see.

MyMom, what is your definition of a first class citizen? What are your expectations? I ask because you said you didn't want to be treated as a second class citizen.

Likewise, Poles murdered thousands of Ukrainians. See a trend here?

He had to state it, MyMom. Brits can travel to Poland, simple.

Competing for jobs is a reality and quite a few are the victims of being pushed out unfairly. Want a reliable documentary that shows that?

Life / How many Jewish people live in Poland? [145]

Yehudi, Midas and Rogalski spring to mind. They come across as fair and present reasoned arguments. They don't strike me as being defensive and often know their stuff.

It's not all their resentment. Some Lithuanians have come in for stick. It's the sheer numbers people objected to, not Polishness per se. Poles often take things too personally and you've just shown it again.

Many foreigners don't have the moral right? Why not? I'd argue that many improve your culture, they add colour.

The Jews were roaming nomads for so long. It's not like they were from a specific country pre-Israel.

Poland is bigger than the UK.

Love / Don't want others to join us at a table - is it normal for Polish girls to get angry? [161]

I think the OP needs more experience and to have certain approaches in mind. In the main, people are far flightier than they were before. I always operate from the premise that I am just a convenience for many here. A lot of my experience has borne that out in practice. As a foreigner, you are like an interesting experiment with which to play around. Also, always assume that she has a Polish lad.

Good first point, Midas.

I like the second too. If the boot was on the other foot, how would they cope? Poland has enormously benefitted from the EU and now they say they don't have the resources for foreigners? Tolerance is sustained til trespass sets in.

History / Chance of Lwów once again became coming part of Poland [344]

Very true, pawian. I accept that the older generation might bear some grudges but I really believe in the 'you have your own country' notion. Look at Albania. They were allowed to spill into Kosovo and called Kosovars but, to me, to speak of a Kosovar should be to speak of a third entity.

News / HIV infected Nigerian has bitten bus ticket's controler in Cracow! [56]

I haven't met one either. Then again, I don't travel on buses ;) ;)

Seriously, I have travelled on trams and buses a few times but found them to be ok. They tend just to sit. They are often stern-faced, yes, but that doesn't bother me at all. Aberdonians (my city's people) are hardly all jolly either on buses.

Although official sources can have agendas too, they are more reliable than those of newspapers. Why not quote some of their figures? The point is that some perceive the Poles to have stolen employment away from them. Right or wrong, we have to start from that premise.
