UK, Ireland / British people more intelligent than the Poles? [53]

PISA scores are reliable to assess national intelligence

The scores don't have much value because a whole bunch of participating countries prepare their students specifically for the PISA test.

Genealogy / Any tips for tracing ancestry? Having problems with variations of my surname Skotak [9]

Yes, but how does that help the OP to overcome the brick wall he has hit with his family research? If I understood him correctly, he is not able to establish a connection between his ancestors and the place they emigrated from. In this case, the way to go is to find the first immigrant of his family to the US, find the naturalization record, the ship manifest, census records and similar data, and then trace back the person to the old country. The LDS database is a perfect starting point for that.

Polonia / German police aggresively manhandle Polish citizens? [16]

Seems that these people were distributors of counterfeit money. Their cars were stopped by police and the men inside became extremely aggressive when the cops tried to arrest them, even crashed into a police car while trying to get away. So it looks as if the Polish government demands a thorough investigation why some of their country's criminals were "assaulted".

Life / Is Poland a poor country? [578]

Just like Britons moving to Australia.

Those were convicts... :)

Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita

I would use the GNP instead.

History / Slavic vs Germanic thinking.... and the philosophical differences [251]

nonetheless continue to fail to grasp your point

I think (...) what he's saying is that he wants localized forms of place names to be abandoned and (in this case) the Polish version to be used worldwide. So not Warsaw or Warschau anymore, but Warszawa from now on. Sounds kind of strange.

Australia / Can My Polish girlfriend get a working visa in Australia?? [28]

anyway if have any idea how to find and contact some farmers

As I said, look for some farming communities that might interest you (if I were you, I would stay away from the desert interior of the continent...), google for the local newspapers and check if they have their Job Classifieds available online. Shouldn't be too difficult to find tons of phone numbers.

Examples:

Mildura: sunraysiadaily.com.au/classifieds/
Barossa Valley: classifieds.barossaherald.com.au

Australia / Can My Polish girlfriend get a working visa in Australia?? [28]

Is there any chance to get the contact details of the farmers and contact them directly?

You can try to find the Job Classifieds of some local newspapers online and go from there, but I doubt that this is a very good idea. You'll need to get your working permit sorted out, you have no idea about taxes and stuff, and I'm quite sure that you'll ask yourself what the heck the guy on the other end of the line is talking about - especially, if (s)he's from the Outback. My advice: go through a recruiting agency and also check the government employment agency (jobsearch.gov.au). Anything else is a waste of time and money.

History / Slavic vs Germanic thinking.... and the philosophical differences [251]

German racism is an ideology is a pillar on which German nationalism and German identity has been funded

In my eyes, extreme nationalism and/or state sponsored racism is to a large extent a phenomenon of the 19th and 20th century. It has died in the ruins of WW2 and I doubt that it could ever raise its ugly head again in Europe. Germany is not the aggressive, imperialistic and/or militaristic country anymore - nor is France, Britain, Russia or Poland. Times have changed, and in my eyes it's not very helpful to repeat all this dated Cold War propaganda over and over and over again.

Speaking of 'Slavic vs Germanic thinking' though, I have to say that it seems to be very obvious who of our PF members grew up behind the Iron Curtain and who didn't (I mean this in a nice way, by the way!). I have friends in East Germany who display the same sceptical, slightly anti-captitalist, "You are the evil imperialists" attitude and who also have the tendency to see the past in a better light than it really was.

I've never been subjected to any German racist propaganda

Of course not, because the last racist propaganda that came from Germany was in May 1945. To claim otherwise is simply BS or - as the commies used to call it - agitprop.

About Chopin let make it simple for you.

From the last link I posted (or use Google if you want):

Quote:
" I have saved for my conclusion the one comment from Chopin himself that appears to speak to the composer's intention to raise the flag of Polish nationalism through his music. "The Official Bulletin declared that the Poles should be as proud of me as the Germans are of Mozart-obvious nonsense."

My whole point is that nobody except for a handful of people really care whether Chopin was French or Polish, or whether Copernicus was Polish or German. You get Chopin's remark regarding the Germans and Mozart, right?

History / Slavic vs Germanic thinking.... and the philosophical differences [251]

that subject has been long decided by the people knowledgeable in the field

Most folks would agree that both Poland and Germany can "claim" him, but we all know of course that people of a certain political affiliation don't like that idea...

Sorry but Typically German behaviour

I don't think Wlodzimierz is German.

I suspect manipulation

Question is, by whom? But of course, only people of a certain political affiliation suspect manipulation...

Polish mathematicians have influenced the course of history. Copernicus used mathematics

Hmmm, and I always thought Kopernikus was German... ;)

Genealogy / Being ashamed of Polish ancestry? [156]

My great-grandfather's birth certificate said Germany

Rightly so, because there was no Poland at that time and Posen was part of the province of Westpreussen.

I used to feel shame but no more.

For your ancestors that came to the US more than a 100 years ago? Seriously?

I am Polish-American

You're American who happens to be 1/16 Polish.

USA, Canada / Returning to Poland! Has anyone seen this influx of people from the US? [27]

Many of the Polish bars and nightclubs in the Chicago land area are disappearing as their "customers" have returned to the homeland for a better life.

They have to close their doors because their old customer base is dying. The young PolAms are either not interested or have left Chicago for the coast. There might even be two or three who actually moved to Poland... ;)
