Travel / Pics of Warsaw by the Guardian's David Levene [107]

just it makes me laugh when people from rich countries are excited about visiting slums...

I take a lot of photos of such things/places. it's about telling a story.

Travel / Pics of Warsaw by the Guardian's David Levene [107]

I've had a look at levene's photo library and it seems that the warsaw photos are typical of his style.

he shoots what's in front of him and nothing more. one might argue that that is the beauty of his technique.

his work in other styles ranges from ordinary to good.

his arranged celebrity shots don't come close to those of terry o'neill

with so many gifted amatuers about i'd expect something more from a pro.

i have much better collection of Warsaw photos.

if u are going to comment on the photos, please do so. but there is no need to mention Serbia/Serbs.

I don't think he was attempting to glamourise Warsaw

point taken.

Some of the photos are typical for any Polish city. neither a good or bad thing. just an observation.

Off-Topic / So...which of you are actually IN Poland? [41]

but you didn't have to wear the electronic bracelet, I hope?

fortunately not. but one is required to have on ones person a bottle of belvedere vodka or equivalent. this is handed over when one signs in to ones temporary accommodation. upon re-entry to Poland one must show branston pickle or any heinz product.

I have been allowed out a few times for family visits, but always with an escort and photos were taken to prove my whereabouts.

Life / Girls in Poland shaving side of head!? [30]

Is this hair style that popular in Poland nowadays or is it exaggerated?

u will find it among teenage girls. but i would say very few.

a couple of tv personalities have it.

daughter number 3 says she hasn't noticed anyone at school with that style.

edit: just checked the latest Bravo magazine. out of dozens of photos the only one to sport the shaved look is Patricia Kazadi.

Life / Cost of living in Wroclaw (rent price too) [119]

My work would be located round about 4km west from the "rynek"

that would put u about here: strzegomska business park

if so, that would mean that the nearest possible housing would be one or two kms away.

Is grading strict?

grading is very strict... until it's pointed out that the failure rate is too high... and then after the resits everyone passes.

for many folks uni is a place to occupy time and little else. swat before an exam and double swat before and during your thesis/dissertation and that's it.

there is a reason why Polish unis/colleges are not in the world's top 300.

free time is spent either in the pub or at some private forum bitching about the teachers/tutors/whatever.

Life / Wiosna - Marzanna ceremony? [7]

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marzanna

The tradition of burning or drowning an effigy of Marzanna to celebrate the end of winter is a folk custom that survives in Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Typically taking place on the day of the vernal equinox, the rite involves setting fire to a female straw effigy, drowning it in a river, or both. In Poland, this is often performed during a field trip by children in kindergartens and primary schools

News / POLISH GUY FROM LONDONG STALKING MADONNA...caught in her house... [12]

anyone who would want to stalk, be near or have anything to do with the gap-toothed trollop (królowa popchałtury) should have his head examined.

i'll keep that in mind the next time i meet her.

and yes, i have exchanged words with her.

Life / Why are Poles in other countries called "Plastic Poles"? [168]

It is a phrase concocted by some younger members of the PF,

the phrase refering to someone as plastic has been around for donkey's years.

plastic = false

there are plenty examples of its use in Urban Dictionary.

UK, Ireland / Bath City offers 80% discount to Polish people [18]

What do you think?

it might have been better to make one game free for everyone. maybe the first game of the season.

getting people interested is one thing. if the team lose by a big margin, who will bother to go to the next game.
