Law / I have recently been scammed in Poland. My company accounts frozen. [58]

Funny.

It's not funny Pawian. It's a disingenuous way of dealing with it. The law in this case is divisive and unbalanced and assists the cheaters. When such large sums of money are involved, the burden of proof that the documents were served correctly should be on the claimant.

UK, Ireland / Daniel Pelka murder: Polish mother and stepfather face life sentences [96]

But you raised the issue of cultural difference.

I raised the cultural difference, not as an attack on anyone, but because I know from our children's school how much weight cultural differences are held within UK schools, how it gets repeated back parrot fashion, and should you dare question why on earth they remove a child from a class to learn English with a Polish teacher that can't speak English anywhere near as well as the child in question, they get worried and say we have to respect her Polish culture. So contrary to the fight you want to pick, I'm not suggesting that culture had something to do with it, but the ingrained fear teachers have of offending a pupils culture which is possibly why nothing or little was done.

I repeat the following

Poland
3000 missing children a year
1700 babies sold
Tier 1 country for child trafficking.

Pot Kettle Black

Yes, and some Polish migrants are welcomed in their new communities while others are met with hostility or indifference.

TBH it sounds like they arrived hostile to the neighbourhood from the media reports

Yes, but the evidence used in the trial had nothing to do with cultural differences.

The trial was to determine guilt not the failure of the school or social services. Wait for the public enquiry.

The nationality of the parents is irrelevant - the law requires makes the state responsible for the welfare of all children physically present in the UK, regardless of citizenship issues.

From 3 years of bouncing back and forth between Polish and UK courts I know it is not that simple but you are right in what you stated.

We need the Norwegian approach - far greater funding for social services, stronger child protection and no messing around.

Agreed Jon. Protect first and be damned afterwards which is how the English court system does work if one of the parents is well meaning. It takes around an hour to get a prohibitive steps order and temporary residence order if you know what to do and which court to go to. Once that's in place you can then fight it out in court away from the child.

The true measure of civility in any society is how well it looks after its most vulnerable.

Read above. Its self explanatory. Chalk and cheese I would say.

At what point does the state step in and limit the parents authority? It is certainly a tricky one. The child is Polish, I suspect he held a Polish passport and I suspect and the parents had no affiliation with UK other than being here. There are all sorts of legal implications and then you have cultural differences. What is acceptable in Poland may or may not be acceptable in the UK, but schools and government departments are warned repeatedly about discriminating against culture. I experience this in school at any meeting with teachers when they blast on about how they support Polish culture. I doubt they really know what it even is. I don't and I've been with Polish people since 2005.

I have no doubt intervention would have saved the child and in that respect the child was desperately let down. The result of the public enquiry will bring to light the failings, and who is, and why they are to blame for the lack of intervention.

A couple of years too long and we will know.

English Defence League

If one of the kids 'parents' joined the edl, the kid would be alive and in foster care.

Quite possibly.

Poland

3000 children missing a year
1700 babies sold (The one's that are known about)
Tier 1 Child trafficking country

If the government is reluctant to get a grip. What can you expect from some of it's people.

however, i'm not sure if they get sent to Poland.

They get sent anywhere in the world. I wasn't suggesting she should be denied this right. It would be her opportunity to find out the truth.

people just don't want to get involved.

It's more complicated than that. For example yesterday in the news early in the day a big mission to round up illegal immigrants was announced. Later in the day, this news was erased. Basically because it was aimed at particular cultures. There is a big fear of not offending other cultures with government employees. PC gone to far. The media is even filtered these days so there is barely a mention of crimes committed by immigrants. Fear of inciting racial hatred.

Quote from the mother of the mother of the child

She said: "I don't know how guilty she is. She was under his [Krezolek's] influence but also England - the British state - are responsible."

"She was a normal girl, we were a normal family. It wouldn't have happened in Poland."

"Will I see [my daughter] before I die?"

I'm sure she will. They will no doubt apply for a transfer to Poland, get a far lesser sentence and be working with children in a few years!!!

Life / Polish natural remedies and homeopathey better than English [84]

do you have proof that homeopathy isn't effective ?

The proof is in the fact that many ailments are now survivable.

Many homoeopathic medicines in the past were in fact poisons and killed you anyway.

Food as medicine is on the increase, as well as the rise of organic products.

So people are beginning to realise they are what they eat? Old man says you are what you wear. Wear well! Young man says you are what you eat. Eat well!

Eating a balanced and varied diet, getting enough sleep and avoiding copious amounts of alcohol will keep you away from the doctors and quacks in most cases. A lot of homoeopathic medicines, in one way or another help you sleep. They promote the bodies natural healing process. Getting enough sleep seems to be the key.

History / Poland is a Catholic country [177]

Following a recent hearing in Poland and being left incredulous at a judges statement in court which went like this -:

"Mr x has admitted to physically attacking Mrs x but because Mrs x accepted his apology and returned to the marital home, Mrs x by her actions, accepted the physical attacks. Some physical violence is normal in marriage"

It would be difficult to accept this from a man but from a female judge, it's hard to swallow. This led me to try and understand and I found this article which makes a really interesting read.

Are Polish girls better cooks?

I got the short straw and mine definitely fails in the culinary department. Then her mother can make wildly varying dishes taste identical. Salty cardboard springs to mind.

a delicious zurek

My favourite served in a hollowed out crusty loaf. TBH its the only food I can say that I have found interesting in Poland.

Love / Divorce case in Polish court [8]

My understanding is that now you can do this by mutual agreement. But I guess that could mean you both say we are equally responsible.

A friend of ours completed hers within 2 months with one visit to court. We are still at it 2 years 8 months later. Judgement due next Friday and we expect his appeal by the following Friday. 3 months to get back into court and and a further month for the final decision.

The sooner they change the laws on divorce the better for all concerned. It's a very unpleasant process.

Love / Divorce case in Polish court [8]

Will I be separated if I don't go to the court and the court will automatically break off this thing?

You are playing with fire messing around with this. Do it properly. Go see a solicitor. Harry is correct about the alimony. You could be paying until your dying day. A divorce in Poland is now quick and simple as long as nobody wants an "at fault" divorce.

News / Poland's John Paul the Great canonisation this year [177]

This is something one can overcome - to a greater or smaller extent, among others, thanks to psychotherapy.

With all those LOL's you must have one sick sense of humour.

Psychotherapy. Don't make me laugh. Opinionated and the text book solutions we have had from the 7 we saw in Poland beggar belief. They seem to think you fit the text book to the situation and not the situation to a solution. I guess they all study the same material. Rubbish. Rubbish. Waste of money. I'm sure the English ones are equally up their own bottoms.

You should try and imagine yourself in that predicament with possibly the next rapist growing inside you; but its impossible.

was he old or young

Early 40's at a guess. Maybe late 30's. Definitely dressed far younger than his years.

He was rather concerned about the potential 10,000 zlt fine for screwing up the hearing.

A lot of sworn translators frankly are rubbish

Frankly I can vouch for that fact. In a recent hearing (last month) in Poznan I even had to translate "shop" to the translator and every sentence in English had to be repeated several times and then corrected. He was useless and not only useless but 35 minutes late which meant we ran out of time and an additional hearing is now required. Irritating and expensive.

**** up and brewery spring to mind.

Life / Right or wrong, Polish controversies [11]

I do also believe though that once a prison term is up a person has served their time and should be allowed to re-enter society

Its too liberal an attitude. Clearly a person that commits such an act is not a full shilling. How can anyone know they have been fixed while inside? Too many times people have been released in the for perverse and violent crime only to offend again. Certain crimes should carry an indefinite penalty. I agree with your statement for pettier offences.

Yes

Maybe, but should she have been released into the community at all. Would you trust a psychologist that says she is better? Would you release Ian Brady because he found god?

IMO this is a heinous crime and for any comparative crime against a child there should be no release from prison what so ever. The world doesn't need people like that.

Travel / Just visited Poland - here is my random rant [154]

At least in my opinion, it might make small business owners realise that they need to treat clients properly.

Yes. Where exactly does the customer is always wrong ethos come from?

My partner bought something in Poznan recently which she attempted to return as a major component was missing only to be accused of being a thief. The hostile shopkeeper was told in no uncertain terms she could keep the 30zlt item. Shabby behaviour!

A friend of ours works in a shop selling make up and English products. She told us how she sold a product which the customer returned an hour later because it was dry. She of course refused to accept it back. She couldn't grasp the concept that she had lost a paying customer and possibly several more (word of mouth). For her it was more important to protect her boss from any losses.

:):):):):)

Nice Pawian.
I was hoping to see a lot of places like this in Poland, but disappointed to find the majority of what people considered old were properties from around 1910 - 1920. I for one would like to see some serious investment in older city buildings that can be very attractive but I understand a lot of properties have ownership issues. It's interesting walking round Poznan bullet hole spotting.

UK, Ireland / Western Europe is not Paradise after all (Polish doctors in the UK more popular) [75]

2 week wating time for an appointment with a simple GP?

Its a shame they forget to mention all the walk in centres that are available in the UK. Those where you arrive and take your turn; usually within 30 minutes where I live. But of course that spoils the story.

I think there is good reason its not so easy to see "your doctor" in the UK now and you are given the bounce by the receptionists. They are just plain fed up with wasting their time on the hypochondriacs. We had an issue where it was essential to see the doctor ASAP recently and once it was explained why, we were seen within 3 hours.

There are more than enough hypo's out there including my sister who managed to get banned from seven doctors in 20 years.

Life / TVP axes Dobranocka [21]

I'd rather my kids used their imagination and watched cartoons like Samuri Jack or Batman that muck like BP.

That's entertaining. Where does there imagination come into that one then? It's all the markettng departments and the stories being told to them by someone else. Keeps them quiet for a while and you don't need to put any effort in do you.

Life / TVP axes Dobranocka [21]

cartoon network took care of that.

How anyone can tolerate more than a hour of cartoon network, I really don't know. A cacophony grunts, groans and appalling language and afterwards the kids want to go outside and beat each other round the head with plastic swords or anything else that comes to hand.

If I had the final say, I would ban it and encourage the children to watch programmes that teach them how to make things so they don't become over educated and incapable of doing anything. I don't so I seethe quietly to myself and wait for the next shopping trip, when they spot something Ben 10 and profess their absolute need for such an item. When asked what said item is and does, it's often followed with "er er er er but it's really good". Damned good marketing is what it is.

I miss Valerie John and Peter; not forgetting Shep.

Life / Etiquette in a Store and Market Queues in Poland [146]

I've lived in London for approx.

The English have left you see

in Poland people are bloody rude from north to south and east to west.

How many times do you have to be reminded about blanket statements? Lenka

It does appear to be the consensus of opinion and its not explicit enough to be a blanket statement unless you want it to be of course. Just sayin.

Off-Topic / Modern parenting = bad parenting? [20]

A lot of parents are afraid to punish their kids for doing something wrong

Afraid to appear as the ogre to the child.
