News / Komorowski won Poland's presidency vote? [125]

Yep .... it's getting mighty close ...

Quite the opposite. From being 75,000 votes down to Kaczynski, Komorowski is now 350,000 ahead with only 20% left to be counted.

Can't see Komorowski losing it now - in real terms, there's about 3 million votes to be counted - meaning that Kaczynski needs about 55-45% in the final results to win. It's not going to happen.

I could not care less about a view of Poland in the eyes of the foreign nations. Why should I?

Because these countries are the ones that do business in Poland and provide wealth for Poles. Unless of course, you want those high days of 1990 back!

News / Komorowski won Poland's presidency vote? [125]

haha knew it Kaczor is starting to win..

Actually, it's not such a surprise - we know that the countryside is quicker to report the results than cities. I don't think it's enough of a lead for Kaczynski - he only has a lead of 65,000 or so right now.

The one thing is certain - half of Poland is going to refuse to recognise this result.

I have no problem at all to pay more Polish tax for the elderly

Yes, you might have no problem. But what about those earning 1300zl gross? Do you think that they can easily stomach an extra 4-5% tax?

News / Komorowski won Poland's presidency vote? [125]

Thats not good news in any country, having people in power who can't be hindered by anyone or anything is bad even if they're reasonable and solid, PO is neither.

I'm not sure why people are saying that PO has complete power - the PSL still have a say, and they've hardly been entirely in harmony with PO lately.

PO are also highly unlikely to do anything offensive with elections due this autumn and next year.

News / Komorowski - Russian stooge, traitor background [42]

(not suprising then that soldiers are so against Komorowski),

Yet more rubbish from Kaczynski supporters.

Komorowski WON in the first round with soldiers, so they're hardly "against" him.

he and Tusk can't even lead the investigation of the biggest polish tragedy in Smolensk and death of the former president in Smolensk, they don't explain all the fishy facts around this crash so if they can't or don't want to do this so how can they lead the whole country properly?

Ah, the usual paranoia. Has Jaroslaw complained? No? Then you should follow his lead.

Tell us though, what are the "fishy facts"? Let's have some evidence that doesn't rely on dodgy Islamic terrorists :)

Work / CAN SOMEONE GET WEB / GRAPHIC DESIGN JOB IN POLAND? [12]

You haven't got a chance. Don't even bother thinking about it - no-one is going to hire a non-Polish speaking web designer when there's plenty of Polish web designers out there looking for employment.

Law / Driving permits in Poland [6]

So, the question is; will we need to get polish driving permits, or will our U.S. ones suffice?

You will need an international driving licence - which is essentially a translation of your US driving licence. Apart from that, you're good to go as you won't be resident here for more than 185 days a year.

UK, Ireland / Wanting Polish lessons in or around Huddersfield UK [12]

We do language tuition through Skype. It is actually much better than learning face to face! Why?

Better? I don't think so.

Incidentally, define qualified? Are they qualified to teach the Polish language, or are they simply graduates of Polish philology? There's a world of difference between the two.

Work / Work Permits and dependants for US citizen (hired by a school in Poland) [6]

Now if you have no residence here then going to Ukraine or Belarus would be an option as you get a stamp from them on the border. However painful that experience could be....

It is not an option, despite the nonsense posted on dave's ESL cafe to the contrary by people who really should know better. Schengen law is 90 days out of every 180 on a tourist stamp - end of story.

1. If my husband comes with me is he able to live legally based on my work permit?

Sure, but he will require a work permit for any work that he does. Your work permit isn't enough. Don't even bother doing any work without a work permit - the punishment is deportation within a week.

News / Decoded talks inside Poland's president's plane are released in Internet [337]

I've got access to exactly the same transcript that the Polish State has released as authentic. The Russians also haven't said anything about the authenticity of it, which must be taken as agreement that it's authentic.

Can I prove its authenticity? I'm relying on the word of the very top people in Poland. In the absence of any credible proof to the contrary, it's as good as I've got.

The problem Seanus, is that these conspiracy theories are very badly thought out by people who simply don't know what they're talking about. Some of the nonsense is beyond incredible - such as the talk of "capturing" a GPS signal. The link that MediaWatch posted is so completely ridiculous that it's impossible to even thoroughly debunk it. And of course, the link relies on information from a very highly questionable source that doesn't even publish contact details.

To give you an idea - many conspiracy theorists are claiming that the plane was equipped with the latest technology. Yes, it was - a nice mixture of Russian and Western technology. But what use is this technology if the airport didn't have the technology to interface with the aeroplane? That's just one of the many "holes" in the theories.

News / Decoded talks inside Poland's president's plane are released in Internet [337]

The plane was cleared below 100m relative to the terrain they were directly over and not ground level.

Convex will confirm this one way or another, but I'm pretty certain that if you are cleared to a certain height, it's to the height above the runway (so called barometric height - using a barometric altimeter). Using a clearance based on a radar altimeter wouldn't make any sense whatsoever - terrain around airports is never completely flat. Look at Aberdeen Airport - if they were cleared to 100m using radar, they could never get the plane down after it passes over the golf course in Northfield because they would be far too high.

Their rate of descent was also not made perfectly clear to them.

The autopilot was set, so they knew their rate of descent perfectly fine. No surprises there.

Many sources I've heard and read have said that the Russian ATC were negligent in the performance of their duties.

How many of these people have ever even been inside an ATC tower, let alone one as poorly equipped as Smolensk-North was?

That's an interesting article.

It's from a fringe publication not known for publishing accurate articles.

The article is correct that there are too many inconsistencies with the reports of this tragedy to say that it can all be simplistically explained as because of "pilot error". Like the article said, the Russian transcripts could well be counterfeited.

If the Russian transcripts are fake, then the Polish investigators are lying. Personally, I trust the investigators more than I trust fringe loony publications. You might choose not to - but you should think about who these newspapers are trying to sell their publications to.

Reports are always inconsistent - after any disaster, the first hours always have a mess of information and people simply report what they're told. Look at the 7/7 bombings in London - it was initially believed that there was some sort of major power failure which caused some accidents on the underground. In fact, only until the bus was blown up was it becoming clear that it was a terrorist attack.

That's why we have investigators.

According to top German experts, they think there was definitely foul play that went on. They report that the plane was given false data from the Smolensk airport. At least by the airport navigation signals that went out to the arriving plane.

I'm curious as to what these signals were, given that (as you've been told repeatedly) - there was no ILS system installed at Smolensk-North.

What you want to ask yourself is what the Polish Air Force was doing in allowing such an inexperienced crew to handle such a flight.

News / Decoded talks inside Poland's president's plane are released in Internet [337]

How credible is this publication?

It's not - I can't recall the exact situation with Gazeta Polska, but it's a fringe loony publication.

My understanding of Polish is limited, but they are saying that the Yak-40 pilot heard the control tower order the descent of the presidential plane to 50m, is that right?

It's not reported anywhere else, so it's likely to be more nonsense - probably designed to add fuel to the "LECH WAS MURDERED" claims favoured by people who think that they're helping Jarek win the election.

The Russian ATC knew the Polish plane was too low and that's the end of story.

Well, they knew at least 1-2 seconds before issuing the Horizon command. Given the limitations of the radar installed at Smolensk, it seems rather unlikely that they knew earlier.

They did very little to guide in light of the weird terrain.

Why do they need to guide? The plane was cleared to 100m, no lower.

Is there a proper source where all the details are summarized appropriately?

We won't know until they release the GPS track of the plane. There are some very credible theories about the path of the plane - but it's impossible to say with 100% certainty based on the cockpit voice recorder. We do know that at the "outer beacon" - they were 100m too high.

News / Komorowski - Russian stooge, traitor background [42]

Smear tactics - that's what PiS followers have mastered well.

Incredibly poor smear tactics as well - they can't even get their facts right.

the Kaczyński family were pretty well-off in the communist times.

And this was despite Kaczynski's father being in the AK. Very strange, don't you think?

News / Komorowski - Russian stooge, traitor background [42]

Broniek's daddy was allegedly from the AK (Home Army) and was captured by the Soviets who, instead of executing him, swiftly promoted him to officer level.

Allegedly?

How about sticking to facts?

Kaczynski's father WAS in the AK, and he was allowed to stay in Poland post 1945 without any punishment. His children were allowed to be on TV, and funnily enough, his sons (despite being involved in Solidarity) seemed to stay out of prison during martial law - odd, huh? I mean, Komorowski was imprisoned during that time.

Instead of making up nonsense about Komorowski without any proof, let's stick to the facts - and the facts show that someone was protecting the Kaczynski twins. It, after all, is rather odd that they escaped attention and were allowed to continue to work freely without prosecution. Or they were simply nobodies - which is it?

Platforma - the Solidarity faction who in 1989 successfully pushed for the former Communists to steal state assets with legal impunity and not to face prosecution for their crimes under Communism.

May I remind you that the "PiS" side of Solidarity signed the Round Table Agreement too? If they were so honourable, why did they sign?

History / Should HMG compensate Poland and/or Polish veterans? [90]

The question I don't understand is why Poland attempted to fight a conventional war in the first place. With two much bigger enemies either side, it would have made much more sense to fight like the Swiss - hit and run.

News / Candidates for presidency in Poland: Situation in Belarus is a real challenge [7]

I think JK is an idiot!

I think he's shown his true colours - that he wants to interfere in governmental politics. The fact that he's not even elected yet, but he's still managed to anger the Belarussians tells you all you need to know.

you mean we are all concerned about Polish people in Bielarus but they are not welcomed in Poland? Do I get it right?

Basically, yes. Poland has only given them the "Karta Polaka" and not citizenship - meaning that they are stuck in Belarus. And funnily enough, the Karta Polaka was a PiS law!

Sure, the situation isn't great in Belarus - but if they supported the government, life would be ok for them. Just like the ordinary population!

News / WHY DOES POLAND BUY GAS FROM RUSSIA? [105]

But again, bargaining can be made to reduce the length of the contract to at least 10 years.

But why only 10 years? It's not long enough to get the proposed nuclear power station online, nor is it long enough to make any serious investment into renewable energy. 20 years is actually about the right time - it means Poland will have long enough to actually diversify without having to worry about another contract renewal coming up.

Ukraine - well - tough situation. The country is highly unlikely to have the cash to use alternative sources, and really, what else could she do?

News / Candidates for presidency in Poland: Situation in Belarus is a real challenge [7]

Who had the best arguments?

Komorowski. Talking about Belarus behind Lukashenko's back is hardly going to make him like Poles!

And finally Jaroslaw Kaczynski stated: “This is the issue which is also to be discussed with Moscow, and when President Medvedev would visit us, and I would be a president, I will raise this question certainly. Though Belarus is a separate state, this question could be discussed”.

So - Kaczynski intends to interfere in Governmental affairs. What part of "The Presidential role is ceremonial" does he really not understand?

Kaczynski underlined that the Polish authorities must defend Poles abroad, and at the moment exactly the Poles in Belarus need as wide defense as possible, and any president must do that.

If he was interested in defending them, why didn't he grant them passports?

And what do you think should be done about the oppressed Poles in Belarus?

Either give them passports or shut up, frankly talking.

News / WHY DOES POLAND BUY GAS FROM RUSSIA? [105]

The only sane solution. Be as independent and diversified as possible. These 2089 or 3011 year contracts are nothing short of Russian KGB crapping the pants of new energy sources development. Soon this pseudo-federation of independent states called Russian Federation is gone. Feast is coming :)

What, you don't think that signing a long term deal to secure future energy supplies is sensible? You prefer the instability of not knowing if your old people will be warm every year? You prefer the way that your country stole gas intended for the EU?

The sane, sensible thing to do is to sign a 20 year agreement now, and use those 20 years to build alternative sources of fuel. That way, there's no nasty shocks and everyone is happy.

Norway and Scotland could, Delph.

I wonder what the actual economics are?

The problem is, PO or PiS, or even SLD - you just know that they will dither on alternative fuels :(

USA, Canada / polish people in usa that wanted germany to win [34]

Something is wrong with the Polish americans in The US. They run around screaming White power and they hate jews.

They don't scream White Power. Their dislike of Jews is simple - their grandparents were likely no fans of Jews and thus they have the same attitude passed down. Really, the US Polonia is just an example of Poland in 1930 - stuck in time.

Remember as well - the lot that emigrated in the 1920's/1930's weren't exactly the elite of Polish society.

News / WHY DOES POLAND BUY GAS FROM RUSSIA? [105]

Warned Poland? Warned Poland??? That's funny - they think they can threaten us?

Yes, sadly. Poland really doesn't have a good alternative supplier when it comes to gas - can Norway really supply all of Poland's needs?

It makes sense to sign a long term contract, and work towards alternative fuel supply by 2038. Either that, or the old people freeze.

News / Russia, Poland ready agreement on visa-free travel [71]

Russia as an artificial federation of different nations, which will eventually be free,

USA, Canada / Changing plane in the USA without USA Visa [13]

Many airports use a separate gateway for those passengers as the only reason the airplane landed in those cases is a tech-stop, extra fuel due to strong winds, etc. etc.

Ah, yes, of course. But changing flights will require clearance :)

USA, Canada / Changing plane in the USA without USA Visa [13]

Alas, America regards all passengers landing in the US as actually entering the country, thus a visa is required.

Most countries are sensible and allow people to stay airside without passing immigration and customs controls, but not the US!

Travel / Traveling with a dog from Hungary to Poland [8]

Really? Which ones?

Any daytime train won't be a problem - you will have (maybe not required, but bring one regardless) to have the dog muzzled and you will require extra tickets for the dog, but it's nothing extraordinary. If you want to do it, the best option is as follows -

Depart Budapest-Keleti 05:28, arrive Breclav 08:59
Depart Breclav 09:08, arrive Warszawa Centralna 15:32
Depart Warszawa Centralna 16:57, arrive Gdansk Glowny 22:12

rozklad-pkp.pl for timetable details.

The best bet would be to buy a ticket in Budapest direct to Gdansk - it's perfectly possible, and while you won't get the best possible fare, it will mean that you have everything sorted.

The Polish rules are here - intercity.pl/?page=przewoz_psa.

News / US shouldn't interfere in Polish election (Polish-American Advocacy Initiative) [60]

All I ask for is that the next elected guy does all he can to cut taxes and promote small business in Poland. But I don't know if this position will have that big of an impact on those things.

Then you should back Komorowski. PO are the party of business, whereas PiS support large nationalised industries that suck up incredible amounts of cash for nothing.

Just look at who Solidarność are supporting ;)

And yes, this election does have an impact - Komorowski will support the government agenda, whereas Kaczynski will use his veto to prevent many things that can help small businesses.
