Food / Moving to Poland - Culinary Concerns and Food Markets Availability? [15]

we have soy milk and rice milk. I haven't seen almond milk yet.

you can get most spices here. there are a few like allspice and cream of tarter that are not here- maybe in a few select shops.

the grocery stores have pretty well stocked fruits and veg. venders will sell them in certain areas to- like everywhere that a lot of people are. Mexican food is not the best here. Particularly being from LA you will have amazing Mexican foods- you might want to bring the spices necessary but Italian and Indian you should be ok.

I also picked up allergies later in life. I even carry an epi pen. it is such a drag.

Life / My impressions on Poland I: The People, Politics, The Countryside and Infrastructure [39]

The socialism in Poland pretty much amounts to: some groups are privileged, while others are left to themselves or even discriminated against, all according to political agendas. That's your socialist paradise in practice.

sounds like a comparable situation is happening in the u.s. and not a socialist to be found. they call themselves "capitalists"

I am not going to argue with you. But you don't live here do you? You heard from somebody that this is how life is. The fact is- in this country everybody has access to healthcare regardless of income. I am not talking about politics- because no matter what party you follow there are always as$holes in the bunch.

you have to be kidding "some groups are privileged, while others are left to themselves or even discriminated against, all according to political agendas." this is the u.s to the letter- this is the very core of America.

Any well run country requires its citizens to pay taxes. otherwise is impossible. in return you get health care and other social systems that actually help the people of the country. any well run country also has aspects of socialism. you don't hear a lot of problems in Scandinavian countries- their taxes are higher, but they get other things in return- two years maternity leave and health care comes to mind. Plus a lot of other benefits.

America is for the wealthy. Unfortunately the middle class make up the majority of its citizens and they are suffering the most at this moment.

Life / My impressions on Poland I: The People, Politics, The Countryside and Infrastructure [39]

I know what socialism is. I am Canadian- I appreciate it and support it much like my European cousins. You sound like an American spouting the evils of socialism. complete crap. have a look at the world- are countries with socialist aspects like Sweden, Canada, Germany or Australia going through the same crisis as the U.S? U.S is in a complete sh1thole at the moment.

As for being anti socialist- your library, public parks, pools, roads, bridges and many more are all socialist programs, maybe you are not aware.

Life / My impressions on Poland I: The People, Politics, The Countryside and Infrastructure [39]

this post is so funny it is sad- and so wrong. when did communism end? according to you 30 years ago, you might want to revisit that number. once the wall fell- everything didn't turn bright green and full of happy people. it takes time. my father in law still thinks Poland is communist and he lives in Canada- and has for 23 years. you can't erase a peoples history.

almost everything you have written is so off base- is this some sort of joke?

Food / Help me like Polish food (recommendations) [48]

Polish food, is tasty but comparatively bland to other ethnic foods.

Travel / Is panhandling a common sight in Poland? [24]

here gypsies do a lot of the window washing at stop lights. not exclusively but majority. I was at a gas station and this man in a suit came up to me with a container giving me his sob story how he needed gas- he targets women. I said no and the following week he was back again only this time I was with my husband who called him out on his schtick- and he bolted pretty quickly. There are load of people that hit grocery store parking lots looking for the change from the carts.

But I wouldn't say Poland has panhandling to the same extent as other major European cities or North American cities.

Law / What are the legal and financial consequences of DUI in Poland? [12]

a colleague of my husbands just got caught for drinking and riding a bike. He had four beer and then rode his bike. The court wouldn't even listen to his plea- he is banned from driving on public roads for one year.

I like the guy but I totally agree with the sentence.

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

Pip you're full of s...,
no bubble..Over the span of years 2002-2008 real estate prices in Poland have increased drastically. Between June 2006 and June 2007 alone the average price of a square metre in Warsaw rose from 6,683 PLN (1,636 EUR) to 9,540 PLN (2,519 EUR) (over 50% rise in euro terms).[1]

I am assuming the reason you didn't source this little tidbit is that it is actually a wikipedia source- which everyone knows is crap. have a better source?

globaleconomicanalysis.blogspot.com/2010/11/housing-bubble-and-currency-controls-in.html
this is interesting.

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

by the way, how long does it take to sell a house in Poland, hmm I've seen home/apartments still not sold after 2 years.

people are becoming smarter and the market is more saturated. In my osiedle there were 5 houses all owned by one buyer, they were fit out in high end finishings and have been sitting empty for a year. At this moment there are only two left- the other ones just recently sold but it took a long time.

I did a remodel of a 23 m2 flat in centrum Warsaw next to a park- it sold in four days. At this moment smaller flats are selling- retirees that are using their savings or bachelors buying their first place.

There are houses in Warsaw that haven't sold after 10 years. (this is info from an agent)

The market is leveling out and adjusting. Doesn't mean there is a bubble. The market is saturated and the prices are inflated- builders are having to adjust the selling price to accommodate a different buyer-

actually, I am not. That is not a bubble. I also imagine it had something to do with the fact that Poland joined the E.U. in 2004.

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

Now my question is, did prices jump in those areas you mentioned pip? If they did, was it to an extent that went beyond what people could or can afford?

I don't know if they jumped but they were hugely inflated. A lot of developers made a lot of money very quickly- no selling necessary. Now builders are having to lure potential buyers with incentives and lower prices. However, in Warsaw- my direct experience, there are still osiedle's being built where the houses are going for 3.5 million zlots ---and they are selling.

I think in Poland people tend to buy more than they can afford --saving is for people who can't afford to spend money--it is a different mindset than what I know.

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

I think in the larger cities of Poland- Warsaw, Krakow, Wroclaw...etc etc- they will remain quite stable- I do think that there is a market in smaller cities- like Radom, Brodnica and Grudziac- but developers will be nervous to build there- with the mindset that the market is too unstable based on the local economy.

History / How do Poles feel about 10th anniversary of 9/11 [40]

who is responsible? those who drove the planes into the buildings. However, I do believe it could have been prevented and that is the fault of the American gov't that was in charge during that time. Dubya and his drones.

Poland is not in a bubble- why does this keep coming back? The market is leveling out- the market is saturated and people are able to be more selective. I have worked with a developer that had to split existing apartments into two separate flats because the market is changing. People are still buying but they are bing more cautious with their money.

USA, Canada / Do many Polish people in America hate Americans? [592]

I don't think the ultra rich do pay their fair share. They have the means to hire accountants who are able to find loop holes and tax cuts and manufacture abroad so they don't even use American workers.

Canada and America were settled at roughly the same time. How did the U.S. create such a mess for itself but Canada has been relatively stable through the entire economic down turn.

I think that Obama is trying to do what is best for the middle class- which is a majority of the population. Unfortunately, the right wing come along and preach that he is trying to take away the money of the people of the U.S. and people are stupid enough to believe this. What the majority don't know is that the previous 8 years under Bush allowed the rich to get richer and the poor to get poorer- and the middle class are on the poor side of middle.

USA, Canada / Do many Polish people in America hate Americans? [592]

Americans, as a generalization, do think think they are better than others. I have some great American friends and they even think this. They are taught in schools that America is the best country in the world to live in, it is modern day propaganda, but of course many of these patriots have never experienced life outside of the U.S and their cultural vacation is disneyland.

America does have some bizzare traditions- but so does every country- however, in America you are considered important by how much t.v. time you have, so the rest of the world gets to see it. Case and point--Jersey Shore, the Bachelor, Rock of Love, Girls gone Wild.....I could go on and on. It is sad to me that a society values something as pathetic as a Snookie over somebody who has success through education and hard work.

America is also seen by many foreigners as the way to becoming rich. Immigrate and you will be guaranteed success. Of course, this is not reality- and even though many immigrants 100 years ago became successful and wealthy with very little, times have changed- this is not the reality.

America is an egocentrical country. They think the world revolves around them. In some ways it does but with the recent state of the country, I think perhaps its people are starting to question their lives a bit. And blaming Obama for something that has been spiraling out of control for quite some time is pathetic. He has been left to pick up the pieces of a mess that has been going on for 8 years. America is lucky to have Obama.

Language / Difference between bratowa and szwajgierka [10]

Pip, not really. My sis is my sis :). My brother-in-law's wife is not my sister.

It took me a while....so it would be your wife's brothers wife? so confusing! or perhaps your husbands brother's wife? good grief- this is where I think the generalization of the word "ciocia" works quite well.

Life / British working communities in Poland [12]

British expats for the most part come here as heads of company. Are they noticeable- not like they were 10 years ago. Polish working community in U.K do labour jobs- British expats do white collar jobs.

as for relations- i think they are ok- like any boss/employee relationship.
