Life / Have many Poles had enough of one another? [198]

I think many Poles have had enough of politicians commanding large salaries whilst many normal people think they have all the solutions round the table but aren't being paid for them. It's interesting how that works.

Life / Have many Poles had enough of one another? [198]

Well, call me what you will but I was a childminder for 7 years and would have protected those kids with all I had. They must be afforded our protection.

Now, can we get back on track, please? Had enough of one another?

Naked children are very natural. Why do you think naturist videos are legal? Personally, I would still feel inclined to avert my gaze but it's just a little penis and a little vagina, nothing harmful.

News / Poles -- Europe's very best? [21]

Going back to the OP, holding booze is more late teenage talk. It's an egotistical concept based on BS and practised by many nations.

Best food? It's a matter of preference, really. I would say they tend to overrate their food. If you have travelled a bit then you come across some more varied cuisine. I much prefer Asian food, regardless of country. The biggest Polish mistake is the inferiority complex where they see things as better or worse, rather than using the word 'prefer'. I'm not trolling here, it's just true.

As Poles begin to travel more, they may well revise their assessment but some will always cling to their beliefs, no matter what.

True enough! There was a comment to that effect in a series where foreigners comment on life in Poland. I think she was Peruvian-Polish. It's a great series.

News / Nigel Farage voice of reason for Poland and EU? [79]

Farage has also struck at the heart of Buzek. He plays on the idea that Buzek is merely condoning that which went before and Buzek knows it well but can say nothing in the face of it. Buzek doesn't lambast him like others do but he knows that Farage has points which are uncomfortable for him.

I would encourage Poles and fellow Europeans to watch this near 2-hr presentation given by Farage and others. It's one of the most pressing and central issues at the moment and sb needed to do it. Also, well done Nigel in dipping into your own pocket to sponsor it. Poland must avoid the EURO at all costs. I know full well that some Poles would be priced out of almost everything.

Justy's sincerity shows her class. She is really candid yet maintains tact. Quite a skill!

Not really much to add to the thread today. The only addition would be the complaints made against those drunken bums that urinate outside the school where I teach. I go round the area where they probably widdle but always get the distinct impression that some has latched onto the underside of my shoe. They are shameless people and it stinks very badly indeed. Many Poles, to their credit, expect some class and rightly have had enough of it.

Work / Salary expectations in Poland [373]

You just have to cut out some of that nonsense that Brits often engage in, i.e expensive nights out all too often. If you have kids and have to pay off a mortgage, it becomes a necessity to be disciplined on all levels. The biggest problem is that inflation is killing many here. PO saw a rise in wealth and just assumed that everyone would enrich themselves accordingly.

Oh, the flat we got was in a horrible state. They had made a total hash of the renovation job before it got fixed. Another situation where Poles were fed up with other Poles. The previous owner was a know-all type who actually knew nothing. His work was a catalogue of disasters and my father in law wanted nothing to do with him after some time. He worked things out for himself and severed contact with those losers.

Yeah, I can have a look at your work if you want. I like photos :)

They are council flats, yes, but there are plenty around in the big cities.

Good point about renovation, pip. I was lucky enough to have an expert onboard who knew exactly what to do at every turn. Without him, it would have cost so much more. I think that haggling is likely common here as people need to get the best deal possible for themselves.

Are you talking about the appearance of the blocks or the almost enforced closeness? Yes, some blocks look bad on the outside (like mine) but my flat looks really modern on the inside (stylish furniture, tv and Japanese look). I've seen this in other Polish flats too. Why include the word communist so often? Some Scottish blocks are ghastly but it doesn't have much in common with the political system.

I think spirituality was lacking. I mean, people are chasing invisible paper half of the time. Why not copy what the rich did if you know the method? I also feel for them. I've seen middle-aged and elderly folk complaining in Scotland and Japan (quite a lot) but they never experienced communism. Given the much better conditions they lived under, they shouldn't really moan so much.

Oh, the old guard will get caught eventually. The timing must be right.

I have seen it, yes. However, Poland was changed for the better in many ways whilst Yugoslavia was changed for the worse. What do they really have to be spiteful about?

USA, Canada / American...Polish Resident...Returning to the land of milk and honey [103]

CP, he and Greenspan made a complete hash of it in the first place. How could the relevant authorities have let $2.3trillion go unaccounted for? Geez, a Scot would notice $1 misplaced in a budget ;0 :)

Grubas, how can you suddenly find the money to come to Poland yet not be able to go to work?

It also depends on the corporation. If you work in a corporation where the top dogs speak English then you are off to a good start as you will be understood by them.

Work / Salary expectations in Poland [373]

It's not really about the brands, grubas. It's about the weird variations in prices.

As for salary expectations, it depends on the job and timing. It can change at the drop of a hat.

Love / POLISH GIRLFRIEND WONT PAY HER WAY [127]

Nah, it's a timing thing, southern. She tends to stay in much longer if I'm with her, thus spending more. Waiting outside hurries her up :)

Genealogy / Red Hair - recessive gene from Poland? [108]

You know I am too lazy? How do you know?

Oh, I know about Madelaine Albright. She is a despicable woman. If she has natural red hair then she should permanently dye it.

Maybe he didn't have the chance to walk away so quickly, delph.

90PLN for a consultation? That's expensive! Why not consult a medical book?

There are liars, cheaters and scammers in quite a few places and Poles themselves readily acknowledge this. Cheating in shops like Żabka is common.

Some contracts aren't worth the paper they are written on, delph.

I also see his point about the difference between 1l and 2l being odd. Why pay almost nothing more for an extra litre when a litre itself costs 4.50PLN sometimes (Toma in Żabka, for example)? It works two ways. You can get a much bigger pizza for almost nothing more :)

Poles sometimes don't get paid in teaching either. I get paid on time more than they do.

History / Polish contribution to World War II (movie) [4]

For anyone who wants to listen to music connected with WWII, I suggest Sabaton. They are from Sweden and many of their videos on Youtube have Polish subtitles. It might make some people here proud(er) :)
