News / Poland Parliamentary elections 2015 [1060]

The former east bloc would be a logical market as well as the Third World.

I'm not sure it was really that easy right after the fall of the Wall. The way I remember the late 1980's and early 1990's, almost everybody from the former Warsaw Pact countries wanted a car from the west. The used car market was completely drained during those times, and all the old brands from the east (Polski Fiat, Lada, Skoda, Trabant and others) were either taken over by western corporations or simply disappeared. Dacia was bought by Renault, that's why they survived. But you need a whole lot of capital and staying power to transform an entire brand into a competitive product. Something Polish investors of that time probably didn't have.

Poland Parliamentary elections 2015 is the topic

what paper defenses are you talkinging about?

A conflict between NATO and the Russians would turn nuclear within minutes. No need for an old fashioned army.

it would have been logical and conveneint for the Poles to take it over.

A Polish manufacturer would have had no easy access to the EU, so where would these cars be sold? They would have had to compete with western car makers on all markets - no chance whatsoever to win. Nah, I believe it was a good decision not to waste any money on Daewoo. A Polish factory would not be competitive cost-wise compared to China, Mexico or Colombia for example, where the second generation Chevrolet Sonic are built these days. On the long run, Poland would have lost jobs. And not to forget: GM almost went belly up a few years later.

... including in the former East.

Compared with pre 1989 times in the east, yes. Compare the east with the west though and you will soon notice that the east is still way behind in many respects. There's a reason why so many young people moved west and why the remaining East Germans still vote for their old communist masters. Sounds familiar? Exactly the same happened (and is still happening) in Poland. Recovery is too slow and the younger generation doesn't want to wait. They just leave for greener pastures; wherever that might be.

News / Poland Parliamentary elections 2015 [1060]

In 1989 Poland had major industrial assets -- KGHM (copper mining/metallurgy), shipyards, collieries, oil refineries, Cegielski Marine Engineering, car, lorry, bus, tractor and aircraft factories, major chemical works, etc. which were surely worth something.

The same could be said about the former GDR. It reunited with West Germany and even though billions upon billions were pumped into the region, it still hasn't recovered from 45 years of being a run-down "socialist paradise" with a severely damaged environment. Heck, even today wages are lower in the east than in the west, which can have very strange effects in Berlin for example. Hairdressers in the former West Berlin earn more per hour than their counterparts in the former East Berlin.

But is that to be a permanent situation?

No, but it will take much longer than the Polish people expect. Probably another 30 to 50 years or so before things normalize. Hopefully it's faster, but I doubt that because the country has almost no industries at the moment that are competitive on the world market.

paid starvation wages to many workers so the bulk of their profits could be channelled abroad

What do you think was the reason that foreign investors came to Poland in the first place?

Life / Why are Polish so conservative and religious? [240]

I stand corrected:

For many years, the creationist movement in Poland was so marginal that the term "creationism" and its foundations were largely unknown within society..

Polish Catholicism believes in creationism

Poles believe that mankind walked among dinosaurs? LOL! Have they found those cute little saddles yet that they used to ride dinos?

From the Creationism Museum:

Dinosaur

...the great Christian country of Poland

How do you know? You've never been there.

Limey

Wrong again...

You still fail to understand that European nations do not compare in any way to your little backward hick town in fly-over country (SC, right?) USA. Christian fanatics like in the American south or amongst the Tea Partiers are a very rare sight. So please keep your creationism and all the other nonsense -- Poland is already 500 years ahead of you.

Quite the opposite Frenchie.

How many times do I need to tell you? Look up "True Blue" in the Urban Dictionary if you want to know where I am from. Hint: it's not France... :)

History / Give Poland back it's lost land ! [132]

And do you think that majority of Czechs, Slovaks and Poles are have-nots?

Compared to the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Austria, France, Sweden, Finland, Italy and Luxemburg ... yes. That's not even meant in a negative way because the nations to the east of the former Iron Curtain were at a big disadvantage for a long time.

If we belive to an official legends economy is steadily developing in this countries.

Yes, but only with a lot of help and financial support from the EU.

Gotta go now.

Why would you want a confederation of 100 million have-nots (sorry to be blunt) with no competitive industries to speak of who would be under constant threat by Russia, when you can be part of a 500+ million strong union (the EU) which consists in large parts of rich and developed countries? Makes no sense.

History / Give Poland back it's lost land ! [132]

I wasn't the one who started using the term "lost territories", Lyzko. If you really agree with those ultra-nationalistic nut jobs that Poland has legit territorial claims in the east, then you'll have to accept Russian, German or Austrian claims as well. You can't have the cake and eat it.

that so-called "German lands" in the "former East", may not ever have been "German" at all, but instead, booty of the Teutonic Knights

Same goes for the so-called "Polish lands", doesn't it? They may not ever have been "Polish" at all (to use your words), but were instead taken from someone else who lived there before the ancestors of the Poles arrived in the area. Can of worms, dude. We had this discussion a million times before here.

I wouldn't call that "unfortunately". If nations in Europe start fighting over territory again, WW3 isn't far away. Be happy that Poland is free and prospers. The events in 1989 could've led to a desaster for everyone east of the Iron Curtain.

All land belongs to the Neanderthals anyway...

Do you really believe that Poland has the right to "recover" its former territories in the east? Well, what's good for the goose...

Trying to weasel out again, Johnny? You've been ranting about poofs in Poland, about "a war on Christianity by the liberals", but at the same time you whinge about the loss of some imaginary "moral values" that your church has put in your head when you were a little boy. Why don't you tell us the truth for a change? You hate homosexuals/ lesbians, you despise anyone who isn't part of your belief system, and you expect women to follow a role model that was popular in the middle ages but has no place in our modern world anymore (unless you call "19 kids and counting" modern, that is). Thank goodness that Poland isn't the backward hellhole that you and your fanatical lot want it to be.

News / Does democratic Poland guarantee it's LGBT citizens respect for human and civil rights? [1169]

Us real men...

You "real men" (at least the religious nutters amongst you lot) dream of the good old times back in the 18th century when women were chained to the stove, had to provide sex on demand, and were pregnant on a constant basis. Why don't you join your muslim brothers? They have similar ideas about the role of women in our society.

I believe that Poland should recover these lost territories

I'm sure you will also support the idea that Germany should recover its lost territories in the east as well then...

Poland should go out of the EU ASAP.

If you want to ruin Poland's economy, go ahead. The millions of Poles living in the EU would probably have to go home, Poland's exports to EU members would become prohibitively expensive due to import duties, and the country would lose its main advantage (the one that attracted most foreign investors in the first place) as a cheap location for companies manufacturing/providing services for the EU market. Are you really sure you want that?

Price was territory and, Poles even don`t realize that, yet.

Is Danzig German again and I missed that somehow in the news? Come on, Crow, don't be silly.

and independence..in every aspect of social, economic and political life.

How would Poland look without the EU -- that's the question. And I'm sure, you wouldn't like the answer.

as far as I know we have gained very little from this perceived alliance but paid quite dearly

Without Germany's support, Poland wouldn't be member of the EU and the country wouldn't receive the billions of Euros in support. What was the price, Poland paid so dearly since they joined the union?

Lowering the retirement age, increase spending for welfare programs, EU-scepticism, increasing taxes for foreign banks and supermarket networks, distancing Poland from its strongest ally within the EU (Germany), pushing for a permanent US military presence in Poland ... exactly what the country needs to secure a golden future. Wonder who's going to pay for all that. Oh right, the EU and foreign investors. Good luck with that, PiS.

start counting all the Catholic churches that were mostly built by the Polish immigrants.

Ethnic Poles built most catholic churches in the US?

Another thing that needed to be said: It is natural to the "country of the pope" have decreasing numbers after the same pass out. As also is common for the "country of new pope" have a increase in Catholism after he assume his position.

Maybe on a short term basis, but that doesn't explain that Europe and the USA have become increasingly secular over the past decades.

But after graduation, the students leave the Ivy League universities and get a real job...

You can also study by yourself, but some prefer to go to school to have guidance.

Same school, same grade, same teacher all your life? Sounds pretty dull. Maybe that is the reason why younger Poles stay away in increasing numbers these days?
