Life / Which services is Poland still waiting for? [218]

A few places do free refills, but chips/fries (real ones made by cutting a potato rather than opening a freezer bag) are but a distant dream. So is good gravy.

There used to be a place in Warsw called King Pie. I think it's an American franchise and I quite liked it, however people here either couldn't figure out what pies were all about or just didn't fancy them so it closed a few years ago.

Incidentally, Champions in Warsaw have stopped doing the coffee refills.

Travel / American visiting for Euros, will standard American plug on Apple MacBook laptop work? [5]

The plug will need a travel adaptor. It's easier to pick one up before you go than look for one while you're here wanting to enjoy yourself.

Only some taxis take credit cards, and none take foreign currency, however you can get some zloty at the airport when you arrive - either at an exchange office (I don't recommend that, the ones at airports never give a good rate) or ideally from an ATM. While you're here, the best places to change money are the normal exchange booths, or just use an ATM. If you want to take buses and trams remember to buy your ticket beforehand from a kiosk and cancel it when you get on the bus.

News / Don't go to Poland ... because you could end up coming back in a coffin [313]

People from country A, which is hosting a major sport event this year, claim that fans shouldn't attend another major sport event being hosted this year in country B, because there is a serious risk they might be killed...

No. The media in several countries have raised serious concerns about organised football hooliganism during a tournament held jointly in 'country b' and a neighbouring but culturally similar country. A very different thing.

That's the whole point. Olympics hooliganism doesn't exist, the Olympics aren't in Warsaw and the Euro 2012 isn't in the UK so any comparison between the Olympic games and a football event held in a region with endemic problems of organised hooliganism are necessarily false.

Though as I remember, the last timeEngland hosted the Euro it went rather well.

News / Poland's Economy Is No Joke [63]

This happens quite a lot, though I'm not sure 3000 would make someone a high earner these days.

News / Don't go to Poland ... because you could end up coming back in a coffin [313]

Too thck to realize that TVP could produce and broadcost similar stuff about UK soon before the Olympic games, invite some sportsman or celebrity to comment and then send his/her "Don't go to UK … because you could end up coming back in a coffin" to hit the headlines around the world. What would you say then, koonts ?

We'd say:
A. Well, it's one of the world's biggest cities and **** happens
B. The Olympics will be policed very well
C. There's no such thing as organised athletics hooliganism.
D. Why haven't they then?
E. Why would a TVP documentary 'hit the headlines round the world'?

You really should try harder.

You are so clueless about things discussed here that you didn't even understand that It was sarcasm

From a moderator? No. They ban people for sarcasm. Don't they?

Now go back to your cellar while the rest of us discuss Poland and Ukraine's endemic problems with football hooliganism.

News / Don't go to Poland ... because you could end up coming back in a coffin [313]

So the issue of violence is only an issue during major events then?

The issue is the major event about to happen in Poland and Ukraine. Don't duck the issue.

it seems that Poland and Ukraine have never played home internationals.

if they had folks would understand the reality of what to expect.

but no, it will result in coffins

Pretty well true. A lot of ostrich mentality here. Let's hope the police stay on top of it, but whether they do or don't, it'll make some pretty compelling news footage.

News / Don't go to Poland ... because you could end up coming back in a coffin [313]

Amazing to see some of the vitriol in this thread. A combination of a foreboding that something will happen to cause bad publicity, that and the fact that Poland will be in the competition as one of the host countries but are expected to do very badly.

A whole different kettle of fish, and a different demographic to the football hooligans of days gone by.

In Poland, any reluctance to deal with it may have (indeed almost certainly has) a political aspect. The present centre right government doesn't want to galvanise the hard right and PiS don't want to alienate their supporters.

Anyway, if there are going to be problems, they are more likely to occur in the Ukraine.

Travel / TRAVELLING FROM GDANSK TO BERLIN BY TRAIN INFO [4]

There should be some kiosks open at that time. They are at street level, below the platforms. McDonalds will probably be open too. Gdansk Glowny isn't a large station and there a indicator boards (again at street level) so you shouldn't worry about finding your train. You don't need to validate the ticket.

You took the words out of my mouth.

Of course what it really is is just sniping. People are quite paranoid here that it will all go wrong. The problem is that it's anybody's guess if it will. As I've said before, the government will come down like a ton of bricks on any troublemakers which could also look bad if there are cameras around.

Life / Catholic "Telewizja Trwam" from Poland - your thoughts? [98]

I suggest you have a look back over this forum. It has been discussed here ad nauseam, page upon page of links have been posted and it has been demonstrated beyond doubt how appalling the rydzyk empire is.

Fortunately it is a largely spent force and the voters of Poland have shown they do not trust the party/parties that rydzyk was promoting.

I notice that wroclaw fan zone will be secure. any trouble and there will be no escape.

most folk i know (and myself) will be leaving the city for as long as possible in june.

there will be a fight somewhere as there always is. let's hope a coffin

The authorities will do everything they can to avoid anything happening in Warsaw that will look bad in the media. Though nevertheless, it's a good time to take a holiday out of the city.
