Life / Fresh Christmas trees sale in Poland [20]

A Russian girlfriend gave me Stalin-era tree decoration, a pioneer boy. He gets his chance to sit atop the greenery for a couple of weeks every year at yuletide.

Life / Fresh Christmas trees sale in Poland [20]

We don't. We have a midwinter festival, the origins of which go back much further than Christianity, and which the early church appropriated for its own uses (as it did with easter). I thought everyone knew that.

We're using a huge sprig of mistletoe as our yule greenery this year. Who says you have to sacrifice a tree every year? I think they look better in the ground.

Genealogy / Being ashamed of Polish ancestry? [156]

Goofy. Why would I be ashamed because of what my country's rulers did before I was born? You, I believe, have enjoyed the generous benefits of Britain for a long time. Perhaps it's time to come home and help us build Poland.

UK, Ireland / Poles 'failing to integrate in the UK'? [58]

Crow lives in a little world of his own, where reality doesn't intrude upon his Slavic fantasy. It's a pity that he presents such a bad example of his country.

News / UK to send tanks to Poland. [36]

It's people like crow who keep old hatreds burning for centuries, and who infect others with their deluded and chauvanistic pan nationalism. He is a waste of space.

News / Winnie the Pooh gets bum rap in Polish town [12]

Teacher: What did you do at the weekend, Johnny?
Little Johnny: I went to see my Nana.
Teacher: That's nice, Johnny, but "Nana" is a baby word, and you're a big boy now, so say "Grandma".

Little Johnny: I went to see my Grandma.
Teacher: Good. How did you get there?
Little Johnny: I went on the Choo Choo!
Teacher: That must have been very exciting, Johnny, but big boys say "train".
Little Johnny: I went to see my Grandma on the train.
Teacher: Good boy. Did you bring a book?
Little Johnny: Yep.
Teacher: Which one?
Little Johnny (thinks hard...): Winnie the Sh1t.

Life / Quiet Hours and Hot Water Supply [12]

If I were you, I'd find another place asap. Your landlord is a skinflint and bs artist, and your block sounds like it's made of cardboard. Move soon and enjoy your family.

Food / Was Slonina (Lard) originally extracted from Elephant meat? [17]

I can't believe you're having a serious discussion about possible elephant meat consumption in Poland

Magda, you know PF better than to think that. Anyway, it kept Borat off the subject of a pan-Slavic commonwealth for a while.

Law / Debt - translation agency seeking to recover a cash advance paid to me, advice needed. [13]

A few years ago a translation agency asked me to proofread a medical paper which had been translated by a Polish doctor who claimed to be a competent translator. It was one of the worst translations I'd seen in twenty years on the job (I made 4000, yes four thousand, changes in thirty pages. The agency refused to pay her, and she threatened to take them to court. They said, OK, go ahead. She didn't. I've never heard of pre-payment in this industry, and it's difficult to know what to advise, but I doubt they'd chase you through the courts for 90PLN.

Travel / Warsaw airport baggage handlers - long delays on slow days [2]

I had to tell non-Polish speakers what the announcements meant, because no-one could make them in English.

At Modlin they announce in Polish and English, but the sound system is so awful that the announcements are completely unintelligible in either language.

had to wait over an hour for LS Airport Services to get the bags on the carousel

Crap service, and stressful too after a flight.

Life / Polish vs British vs American - Clash of cultures [390]

There are many truisms

The thing with change is insane. What do they do with it when the till is full? Long ago I learned to have my loose change ready in my hand so the cashier could just pick out whatever she wanted. Now if everyone did that, the queues would be shorter, but people seem surprised when the the check-out girl asks them for the odd change. Why? They've been asked the same question every day of their lives.

He forgot to mention tinned fish in grocers' fridges. What's that all about?

Travel / Water parks / theme-amusement parks in Poland [13]

There are travelling funfairs with a dozen or so rides. One came to our town earlier in the summer. It was run by Czechs who seemed to be in the terminal stages of chronic alcoholism. There were bare wires all over the place, and the rides were lousy. I guess Poland is waiting for an entrepreneur to risk 100m in a permant site. The Tri-city area could be a good place for one.

Love / International/binational couples and communication problems [12]

We have never had any problems due to the cultural differences as we are both Europeans so they are minor.

Agree. With us the nationalities are reversed, but Polish culture has a lot in common with British culture. The only thing I struggled to get used to is the appearance of abruptness in casual speech, which can seem rude at times but is not intended to be. Anyway, husbands and wives tend to train each other, so harmony should prevail.

History / 15 August 1920 - the battle of Poland with the Red Army [24]

I prefer metapedia

Metapedia is a white supremacist hate site popular with neo-Nazis.
Here's something from Metapedia's page on Adolf Hitler you won't find in many biogs of the barking carpet-chewer.
"Hitler was also the one who attributed smoking to cancer and started the anti-smoking campaign and worked hard to promote animal welfare."

Life / Can I find Prozac in Warsaw? [7]

I'd advise you to bring evidence from your doctor that your meds are properly prescribed and that you need to keep taking them. That way the Polish doctor will know you haven't just been buying them online, and it'll make things easier for both of you.

Travel / Foreigner traveling in Poland - is it better to rent a car or travel by train? [9]

is better to rent a car or travel by train?

You'll see a lot more if you get a car. Trains between major cities are fine, but you'll still spend hours on platforms, carrying bags and keeping an eye out for undesirables. With a car you can please yourself. As Smurf said, take the traffic police seriously. Keep to the limits and you'll be fine.
