Life / Selling car for scrap in Poland [7]

I've only scrapped two cars, both in Poland, and had to give the registration documents. The scrapyard will have a form for you to fill in. Do they actually pay now in the UK? It used to be the case that they'd charge 50 quid to take it away. Why not phone the scrapyard and get it from the horse's mouth?

News / Polish-German Reconcilliation Seminar [491]

This has led internet supporters of the present government's propaganda to coin a rather handy term of 'real' Pole.

A very sinister development, and one which must be watched closely. It reminds me the McCarthy era 'Unamerican' show trials in the US.

That's right, maf. Diversion. The oldest trick in the book. trump, for example, uses it on a daily basis. How much EU money has Poland benefitted from? I suspect Polish dipomats tell their German counterparts that this reparations crap is just for domestic consumption.

News / Polish-German Reconcilliation Seminar [491]

The Mail is a rag that is frequently sued. They pay large amounts of cash every year to people they tell lies about. Wiki has a policy of not accepting the Mail as a source because of its unreliability. It is essentially a lifestyle mag with a little news thrown in, except for election time, when they help out their pals at Tory central office.

News / Polish-German Reconcilliation Seminar [491]

If he didn't write such long rambling posts, people might read them. He doesn't help his cause by doing this. I notice his Daily Mail comments are much shorter.

Life / How much are Marlboro Gold Kingsize 20 to buy in Krakow? [14]

pete, you are not going to find any appreciable difference in price, no matter where you go. Expect to pay 16PLN for a pack. If you want cheap smokes, there are cheaper brands like Viceroy, or you could of course support Russian criminals by buying their contraband.

Real Estate / Negligent homeowners in Poland, advice needed [7]

You could pay her 2000 and say, "Sue me", or you could just pay the rent and ride off into your new life. I'd do the latter. She probably wouldn't sue you, but do you really want to get involved in the kafaesque Polish court system? I'd put it down to experience, especially as you are clearly not short of money. You will have peace of mind at last. Good luck in the new place.

Work / Poland - Expat Careers [26]

it is still the best and most powerful country in the history of human existence, and the greatest country on Earth.

You sound like a fanatic.

America is a truly unique place that welcomes people with open arms

How can you say that with trump in the WH?

hope I receive a warm welcome

Well, don't expect a tickertape parade. Poles tend to keep themselves to themselves. You might find that they appear unfriendly compared with the ubiquitous smily haveaniceday attitude in the US, but they are just reserved. Take the country on its own terms and you'll be fine.

Real Estate / Buying land to build on near Czestochowa [15]

a sworn translator

And you should always check that the translation is accurate. Translators in Poland have improved a lot in the last ten years, but there are plenty of bad ones around. When I was a partner in a language school and we needed sworn translations we'd do it ourselves and then get a sworn translator to just stamp and sign the document.

Study / Need some advice about suspending this academic year in Poland [6]

We have just 5 students in our class

Sounds wonderful.

Some academics are so unprofessional and don't give a damn.

That's terrible. The pay for academics in Poland is a scandal, but they should get out if they don't care.

I wish it were possible that abseentism did not pose a problem.

\As I advised before, Individual Studies.

Well, I'm convinced. DD knows more about this than any scientist. Perhaps if the rest of you acknowledged this he'd stfu.

UK, Ireland / Are you able to hear the different English accents? [97]

Ach and Roz are no doubt too young to remember the Scotittish TV presenter Fyfe Robertson in the 60s and 70s. His accent was crystal clear, and I believe he also spoke a ole Scott language. TV Hogmanay was never complete without Andy Stewart in those days.

a black guy in Porridge

Jim McLaren, played by Tony Osoba. Like the black couple in Love Thy Neighbour, he was intelligent, if a bit of a nutter. Let's not forget Phillip Smith, played by Don Warrington, a dignified, intelligent foil to Rigsby's bigotry in Rising Damp.

UK, Ireland / Are you able to hear the different English accents? [97]

I was able to recognize Australian English some time ago, but I'm not sure I can do it these days.

I know one way? Listen out for the upward intonation? Even when the utterence is not a question? (Very annoying.)

Law / I am an American citizen seeking a temporary redidence card and a work permit in Poland [4]

This is my first time actually being in Poland and i love it here

So do I, but it's not Shangri-la. Living and working in PL is not the same as enjoying first impressions. You might find the Polish way of doing things is very different from what you are used to. Give it time. As for work, without proficiency in the language your options are severely limited. You could try teaching English in a language school, but you'd be up against very qualified Polish teachers. You'd need a teaching certificate at the very least.

A few pics from last Sunday in Białowieża.

  • Don't mess with the Żubroń

  • Magnificent

  • A waste of saleable timber, or a habitat for countless organisms?

Life / English family in Wroclaw! [70]

Standard of living and quality of life are two different things. I've been materially better off than I am now but miserable and stressed.
