Language / Polish and other slavic language differences [60]

Czech has h in most cases where Polish has g indeed - głodny is hladny in czech (y is accented in this word like in most Czecz adjectives to mark the stressed/long vowel)

Life / Poland A, Poland B [75]

Unsurprisingly, Azoty's share price is massively down on 2015.

stock exchange is basically gambling anyway - why would the government bother with stock prices - it only affects a couple of inverstors (gamblers) of whom only a fraction are Polish anyway

I think there are more lexical similarities between Polish and Bulgarian

completely wrong - Russian was in the Middle Ages practically based on Old Church Slavonic that was in essence Bulgarian

Life / Looking for a hilly Polish town with commie flats [6]

Walbrzych - yeah Wałbrzych is a best bet - been there - but can't remember the name of the district which is like that (from a vague mamory it is called Piaskowa Góra)

corruption in previous governments but this one came to power saying they would clean up institutions

you can always vote for Biedroń if you insist that PiS is no different to PO

Language / How do Poles feel about foreigners learning their language? [105]

Niech mamusia to zostawi. - Does not sound like anything a Polish speaker would say to their mother*..

you are completely wrong - while I personally very seldom use the word mamusia some people especially older generations often do and the phrase is their phrase of choice in such situations

Language / Polish words that sound funny? [224]

Perhaps one of our native Polish speakers here will confirm.

no ***** and być are not pronounced identically - for the reasons mentioned above by Atch and mafketis - and yes I am native Polish

UK, Ireland / Alcoholics Anonymous for Poles living in Ireland [27]

perhaps in polish specifically geared toward Polish men?

aairlandia.com - this is a branch of Polish Alcoholics Anonymous in Ireland - but from my experience you can't help a person who doesn't realise they have a problem

Life / Are there catteries/boarding kennels in Poland? [4]

So I was wondering if there is such a thing as catteries

yes, in bigger cities - look for "hotel dla kotów" or "hotel dla zwierząt" (literally 'hotel for cats/animals')

Genealogy / What/where was Glowgie Government. And Rätslavik? "Russian Poland" [7]

I wonder if by saying Grossdorf she could have meant the "big" Dąb

it is possible yes - and yes Dąb Wielki is right beside Dobiegniewo and on Vistula - it is doubtful they moved east of Warsaw in my opinion

good luck with your trip - I have never been to Plock myself to be honest and I don't know much about it appart from the fact that there is the biggest Polish oil refinery there

Genealogy / What/where was Glowgie Government. And Rätslavik? "Russian Poland" [7]

Glowgie Government Plock.

in my opinion Glowgie is a place name probably misspelled - Government Plock was a Russian administrative region around Plock (gubernia płocka in Polish)

the most similar town name to Raetslavik is probably Włocławek which was indeed in the Plock government and lies on Vistula
after looking at the map there is a Wielgie village in the vicinity of Włocławek (the name Wielgie can be translated as Grossdorf into German) but it doesn't lie directly on Vistula

Life / Why are Polish people so obsessed with race? [160]

I've never seen a German that looks like Beata Szydlo or the Kaczynski twins.

there is nothing mongoloid about Beata Szydło

the prevalence of Central Asian genes in the Polish population is not that large at all

Life / Why are Polish people so obsessed with race? [160]

Are there white criminals in your country? Are there a lot of dishonest white people in your country?

yes, there are white criminals in Poland but less so than about 10 years ago - Poland exported its scum to the UK to a big extent - and yes there a plenty of dishonest white people in Poland - you can attribute it partly to the economy of constant lack during communism and the couple decades after communism where it was every man for himself - it is gradually changing now for the better

News / EU confirms it will take action against Poland over court reforms [554]

your allies don't burden you with things you are not ready and not willing to carry - like the idiotic penalty on Poland for not fighting smog - it's our business what we sue to heat our homes not the fokkers from Brussels or Strassburg - to name just one single thing the EU burdens us with - if it goes on like this I am all for a Polexit

and Atch were was European Commission when PO thugs unlawfully appointed 5 judges to the Constitutional Tribunal instead of 3

and Atch name a single article of Polish constitution President Duda has broken can you?

News / EU confirms it will take action against Poland over court reforms [554]

PiS (including the foreing affairs minister) already stated that there is a limit to how far they can go with a compromise on the judicial reform - also they stated that the somehow leaked demands by the EU (that RMF supposedly acquired) have never been mentioned before by any of the EU Comission representatives and are a very hard deal for PiS - by the way what do you find so appealing in PiS making concessions in the matter

Law / Poland's ZUS/NFZ payments for businesses [27]

dolnoslask - you live in a relatively poor area, there are many people in Warsaw that are quite affluent and can afford summer homes (my uncle in Mazury sold a piece of his land by the lake to a Varsovian and built a holiday home for the guy and it was in the early 90's)

Language / Do English-speakers sound funny when we speak Polish? [49]

I'm wondering how a Polish family would react to that? What do you think? Would it be funny or would it just be very awkward? :P

to be honest most people would attribute it to your English accent and not hold any grudges and rather find it funny (I bet they would at least snicker, some would burst out with laughter)

Language / Do English-speakers sound funny when we speak Polish? [49]

check Chcę pić versus Chcę picz. Pić is typically mispronounced by Enlgish speakers as picz. I posted about it in this thread but it was moved to another thread an merged with another post of mine which was nothing short of idiotic
