Food / Coffee in Poland: cheap and undrinkable / expensive and good [89]

This article seems to at least partly support my memory:

ok -so the founder was a brit living in poland who has since sold to costas- it was listed as a polish company owned by a brit- semanitics I know- but the point is that they changed ownership.

so we are both right.

Food / Coffee in Poland: cheap and undrinkable / expensive and good [89]

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coffeeheaven

I thought the original start up was Polish and then they sold to Costa coffee. If I am wrong- let me just change my statement to say that I think the coffee has gone too American since the original owners sold out.

Food / Coffee in Poland: cheap and undrinkable / expensive and good [89]

In Warsaw, Green Coffee (a local company) is expanding and is a class apart.

actually the owner is a royal a hole, particularly from a business perspective. and for some people it matters that he is a jew. I don't care about that. I don't think the coffee is so great and I don't like that they keep their foods sitting out for hours without being refrigerated.

I like starbucks because you get a good sized coffee. I also like coffee heaven but I have found that they are becoming more like an american wannabe since they sold to the Brits.

They're not paying for the coffee, they're paying for the image. Look at me, I drink in Starbucks, I'm SOMEONE.

this is poland- that is the only thing that matters- why people drive expensive cars and wear name brand clothing- so that people will notice them.

I like the taste of starbucks- i buy the whole bean and have a latte at home- but I also prefer very strong tasting coffee.

If you are in Warsaw there is an awesome place on Pulawska just past Plac Konst. called Esspressions. It is owned by an Italian who is also the cook. They have amazing pasta and sandwiches and of course the coffee is super. They also sell expresso makers from Italy for outrageous prices. There is also a small deli where you can buy Italian wines, meats and cheeses.

Life / School starting age in Poland [4]

children start "zerowka" at 6. It is still considered play time and is optional- meaning if your private preschool has "zerowka" you can send your child there and they still can start 1st class. 1st class would be the north american equivalent to grade 2.

benefits? depends on your thought process. In zerowka and 1st class the kids don't learn to read- they learn pre reading and writings skills. I am not the kind of parent who needs to brag that my child read at 4 years old. doesn't make a difference to me--I also remember seeing a special on Norwegian schools and how children that learned later- meaning 6,7 or 8 years old had better reading habits than those that learned younger.

most important to me is that my kids learn to read well, enjoy it and maintain the habits for a lifetime- bragging that my child read at age 3 or 4 means nothing.

I have two girls that have gone to zerowka- I have one in 6th class and one in 1st class (grade 7 and 2 in Canada) we are happy with everything- I do have an interest as to why writing in cursev is learned first then printing- this doesn't make sense to me....but overall we are happy with how they are learning.

Life / Please recommend - shopping in Warsaw [30]

What??? this is the most ridiculous thing I have heard. The wrong side of the river??? there are loads of nice places on the praga side- saska kepa is one.

as for the slums....that are around the mall is hardly a slum. that is the lower working class and elderly of Poland. not slums.

Wow, Auchan in Poznan is a totally different place - funny how cities differ.

your funny.
so true. I was in the Auchan in Gdynia and it was quite nice. Generally speaking there are loads of rude people in Warsaw.

Life / Please recommend - shopping in Warsaw [30]

the cheapest place I have found for groceries is Auchan in Piaseczno, you risk your life when you go in there though. The people are rude, it is always jam packed, the parking is a zoo and everybody eats the foods - like fruits and chips and stuff. Maybe just me but I get grossed out when I see people eating without washing the fruits and handling the other foods that maybe I was thinking of buying.

Life / Please recommend - shopping in Warsaw [30]

ul. Mokotowska- starts at Place Trych Krzyzy

There is also Chmelna and Nowy Swiat.
In Warsaw all the malls have all the same stores. If you go to these streets you will find some interesting things.

there is also a new high end mall across from Smyk on Jerozolimskie. It has all brand names if you are in to that- like gucci and prada. I will never go there but I imagine the prices are outrageous.

Life / Gran Torino - Walt Kowalski, the movie [39]

Very anti-Polish movie.

the only thing in that movie that was Polish was his last name- and it was americanized. there was no reference to him keeping his culture- he was american.

USA, Canada / Moved back from Canada to Poland:). Here are the reasons why. [868]

well actually Tim Hortons coffee is amazing but there are probably only a few of us on here who know what it is but I don't think Tim Hortons will set up in Poland.

patronizing. got a job yet, no, didn't think so.

Here we go again, patronizing biatch.I am assuming everyone in Canada has Starbucks within 200 yards from home.Am I right?Doubt it.

have you been to Vancouver?, no, didn't think so.

my point is- in Canada, because the original poster lived in Canada and I directed it to her. In Poland, where I live and you don't, it is not as easy as living in Canada. It is the little things of which you don't know because you don't live here.

maybe you should spend your time looking for a job.

USA, Canada / Moved back from Canada to Poland:). Here are the reasons why. [868]

Starbucks opened in Szczecin 5 min from my work!!!!!!

It really is the little things. I had a chai tea latte yesterday. heaven. In Canada living is easy and you forget all the conveniences you have until you move to a country like Poland. I still have to drive to the closest Starbucks in Warsaw...which is good and bad because I don't really want American business taking over my neighbourhood but at the same time- I love me a good latte!!

Life / Question Of Religious Beliefs That Could Differ in Poland [33]

will "I am a wiccan" be your opening statement? really- it is nobodies business unless you make it obvious. There are loads of alternative religions here. My husbands cousin is a practicing "fake buddhist"--he follows the diamond way- which is not real buddhism...and nobody bothers him.

Life / How many people in Poland are atheist/agnostic? [11]

athieism has always been associated with communism- they tried to take the church away, opium for the masses....etc etc. I am a non believer living in Poland, however I am not Polish.

I think you will find those that are critical thinkers and intellectuals are more likely to be athiests. I also think that in Poland religion and culture are so mixed that if somebody was to deny the church they may get labeled something they perhaps are not.

Love / First Dates with a Polish guy who grew up in France [21]

don't rake her over the coals. I agree that culture and cultural upbringing have direct influence with somebodies behaviour. Growing up in France, being Polish, being American are all relevant- it defines who we are as people.

my advice to you - woman to woman- take it slow just kind of go with it. don't pick every detail apart. Perhaps he is just as nervous or uncertain as you are.

Food / Food hygiene in Poland [60]

Don't get me wrong I love my new home here in Poland but I feel that in some places food hygiene could be a bit/lot better.

I have the same issues- I just don't order food that has been sitting out. But my Polish friends leave their food out all night- salads with mayo, yuck- meats and cheeses too- I have issues with hygiene and food safety anyway.
