UK, Ireland / Britain... What the Poles did for us. [444]

I don't enter into such debates Bzibzioh. I know they did a great job. I know that they were snubbed. I think I know what u meant now. It's just that support is such a broad term that operates on so many levels.

I think we are in agreement now :)

Bzibzioh, ur comments on the first page are hilarious. What support? The Poles were given our aircraft to use to defeat an enemy that was obliterating them. Poles do get support in the UK. Do u really think that the level of support for Brits is that high?

Bzibzioh, what did u mean about support from our country? I didn't quite catch what u meant. U replied to what I said on the first page.

Life / COMBATING "POLACK" JOKES [460]

I've told this one b4. A German, a Frenchman, a Dutchman and a Pole were caught as POW's in Iraq. Facing a firing squad, they were told that all they had to do was to say an element and they'd be set free.

The German stepped up, 'water'. He was set on his way

The Frenchman stepped up, 'air'. He also walked

The Dutchman strolled forward, 'earth'. He marched away

The Pole took position, 'Oh kurwa, fire'...

Love / ARE POLISH GIRLS GOLD-DIGGERS? [359]

Good commentary polishcanuck. In many parts of the world, u swarm to that which is different from urself, unless u have no sense of adventure and take the easy option, going with what u know

Love / ARE POLISH GIRLS GOLD-DIGGERS? [359]

Yes, English teacher. I also like the collocating words with them, pejorative overtones or pejorative undercurrents. English is such a nice language, a little florid in places but that can be avoided.

Back to the thread, another perspective is reality Vs the ideal. Many women read these trashy magazines that bombard (another word with a Polish equivalent) them with materialism. They want the nicest cosmetics, perfumes etc etc. Thankfully, my GF isn't like that. She takes a pride in her appearance but doesn't break the bank in so doing. She buys products from firms like Ziaja, cheap but very good. It's when some women blindly go for designer products that gets me. Ah well, if they have the cash...

Love / ARE POLISH GIRLS GOLD-DIGGERS? [359]

I chose pejorative as it's similar in Polish, it helps understanding. Pejoratywny I believe. I'd usually choose derogatory.

Work / Average monthly salary in Poland is around 1000 PLN (few hundred bucks). [387]

No disrespect plk123, u r a good poster, but there's so much nonsense spread around regarding the average salary per month, this is just one more example of it. Anyway, who cares what people earn? Only in productions like Star Trek:TNG is there true meritocracy.

Love / ARE POLISH GIRLS GOLD-DIGGERS? [359]

Maybe some of them just want a taste of wealth as Poland isn't the land of abundance. However, gold-diggers is a bit harsh.

Some are, most aren't. And anyway, inflation has been disproportionate to salary increases here. Many Poles are either magicians or liars as I don't know how many get by.

Moreover, many Polish women have a right to pursue wealth if it makes them happy. They study for many years, often harder than we do in the UK, and often get little in return for it. This can be seen by qualified people going for 'lesser' jobs in the UK.

Finally, it does have a pejorative undertone. Men are equally to blame, if we are to accept that it is a negative phenomenon. They can always say no but they benefit too from getting a nice chick. Mutual benefit isn't always commonplace in the modern world.

Food / Polish Eating Habits [87]

OK, hmm, let me see, u r on the eating habits thread.

Does Missus like a bit of rump? Nudge nudge, wink wink. Does Missus like stuffing? Say no more, say no more. Would Missus care for some Polish sausage? Oh no missus, no

Was that what u had in mind?

Food / Polish Eating Habits [87]

A class I did last Friday showed me a difference. Scots may well eat soups in the morning whereas Poles tend to have them for lunch. I asked a student after a food lesson if he was off to have some sour rye soup (żurek). He told me that it was too early. He said this was customary in Poland. In Scotland, a warm soup is the perfect way to start the day.

Language / Poland in different languages? [74]

Yeah, quite a language to hear, like one long sentence. The grammar is so complicated. I had a student who spoke it fluently. All power to you learning it, I think the only way to really learn this language is the immersion approach. It could be a lifetime's work if u take a piecemeal approach.

UK, Ireland / Poles leave Britain to return to Poland [89]

God is good to Poles? History has told us otherwise.

Almost a year ago now, as Tusk entered office, one of his plans was to lure Poles back to their homeland. It's hard to say how much of his success can be attributed to other factors such as missing 'things Polish' and the relatively dramatic change in the exchange rate.

Word has it that he has increased the number of incentive-based schemes for people to open their own businesses.

UK, Ireland / Any direct flights from Aberdeen or Inverness to Poland? [11]

Yeah, there was a survey done in December last year. Nothing came of it, despite the high level of interest expressed. A needless paper-wasting activity. I chatted with a checker at the airport a few weeks back when I was in Aberdeen. He told me that the whole thing just fell through but certain people are trying to revive the issue.

I, for one, welcome this. Even if it wasn't entirely profitable, it would still provide a much needed service to Poles who reside there. It'd cut out a 3-hour bus trip to Glasgow or Edinburgh.

Well, I have to ask again. Other than British Airways, which airlines fly directly to Aberdeen airport from Poland? None of this stop-over nonsense.

UK, Ireland / A collection of noimmigration's threads or "STAY AWAY from BRITAIN" [978]

It's a tough question for sure. The only thing we can realistically do is to dish out disincentives to coming. U can't physically cap the level of immigration by turning people away or issuing a VISA system which would cut against the grain of the EU.

I don't want to imply that we should close the door and be recalcitrant. More, we should acknowledge that we have a problem in place so we should lower benefits for immigrants and toughen the procedure for getting them.

It's a natural response, to send out a message that the UK should be no mecca. The fact remains tho, that many immigrants have put roots down in the UK and have a settled intention to stay there. Britain must roll with the punches

Life / What is the reason for POLISH jokes ? [486]

Jokes can be healthy. The Poles have many about us Scots. We don't mind, we have maintained good relations with them since WWII, when they came to our east coast to 'shore' up our defences.

I think some politicians deserve all the bad jokes. They have cost Poland dearly.
