Work / Moving to Poland with my wife and kid for a 1-year contract. Salary/taxes questions. [4]

but if you are registered as a personal business you pay less tax and you get to write off a lot of expenses. maybe somebody could explain this better than me. my husband does this. he is registered as a personal business and his company has hired him to do business- the income tax goes down to, i think, 19%.

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

you don't think that Americans buy stuff bigger than anyone else? you're joking, right? The whole housing crash in the u.s. started because people bought too big houses for too much money with too little of their own cash.

Luckily in Canada our banking has much stricter regulations so we didn't get hit with the housing crash like the u.s. did.

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

Now we are waiting for Pip to provide her definition of a bubble !

I am sure it is there somewhere in the past 14 pages. In real estate a bubble is defined as a sharp incline in market prices--usually based on a guess and a limited amount- much like the stock market, then followed by a sharp decrease and crash.

simply put it is a peak and a crash- but there are other factors that waver into the situation.

and interestingly enough a bubble is only defined after the fact- only when it bursts.

we don't have the sharp decrease. we have a steady decrease and a leveling off- based on market saturation, etc etc.

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

this is a pretty good assessment.
I also wanted to add that I have seen housing prices fall in Warsaw- or rather on the fringe of Warsaw. Developers are starting to add perks such as a new car, fit out included, appliances and a discount. This, however, does not mean there is a bubble. Once again, ad nauseum, the market is saturated, the prices are dropping to a leveling off point and buyers are expecting more for their money.

Nothing that is happening in the market is a shock or extreme.

Love / Living with a Polish man, but he has a drinking problem? [60]

Well I have done my best, he says alcoholics can never stop drinking and that I have the problem not him. I should accept him as he is.
I have responsibilities i have two children at university to support. I have just found out he hasn't been sending his child support payments
to Poland so he's making things easy for me to terminate the relationship.
Thanks for the well wishes

I imagine that being an alcoholic in Poland is very difficult, however, doesn't give him an excuse not to change- sounds like he is happy with his decision. time to move on..best wishes in your future and perhaps getting out sooner rather than later is a good thing- you never know if he will be violent towards you.

Love / Living with a Polish man, but he has a drinking problem? [60]

I think it is a personal issue hiding behind a cultural one. Yes, Poles drink Vodka- just like every other country has its choice of drinks but nobody is forcing him to drink nor is there any cultural rule about having to drink. My husband used to say "I get drunk because it is in my DNA." well- that got slapped out of him pretty fast. What it is -is using culture as an excuse to get wasted. doesn't fly. time to move on.

USA, Canada / Advice needed for Polish mother-in-law visiting USA - health insurance [11]

Canada is worse, they tasered a man from Poland and killed him, and another they handcuffed him, took his passport and detained him for something like a week

yes, everybody knows about Robert Dzienkanski, however that was the RCMP who were responsible for his death- not the border control. That was also in Vancouver- I fly into Vancouver a minimum of once a year- they are the nicest in all of Canada- however I just went through Calgary in Jan and they were nice too. Toronto, by far, is the rudest, however- nothing in comparison to American border patrol. In my experience.

Work / Got an offer from a business consulting company in Warsaw. 5000 zloty Gross? [8]

depends how much you want to spend. do you want a bachelor apt. or a one bedroom? do you want a modern building or an old communist block building?

In Warsaw- I would suggest Ursynow/Kabaty. It is along the metro line, it is close to shopping and rec. centres and other things you might want without needing a car.

for example: oferty.net/mieszkanie-na-wynajem-ken-warszawa-ursynow,1500319680

somewhere along ul. Ken. but that is just my opinion- others may feel differently.

this is an entry level salary- but you are only 23- i would find out if there is opportunity for increase in income if you work there longer.

basic life
rent
food
metro/bus pass
going out a couple of times a week

depends how much you spend- a good chunk will be your rent so it is up to you if you want to find a cheaper place

USA, Canada / Advice needed for Polish mother-in-law visiting USA - health insurance [11]

pip: by those a-holes
I have met like ten of them, none was an "a-hole" and few were even fairly nice people.

seriously, ten?? that practically makes you an expert.

my worst experience was in Chicago- the rudest, dumbest a-hole I have ever met and the whole time I had to be polite and say thank you. Uneducated trailer park trash with too much power.

you might want to have details written out for her in English so that when she is going through customs and being questioned by those a-holes she can just present the information. ex, where she is staying, how long, how much money she has---typical customs questions.

Language / Too many English words in the Polish language! [709]

i just think it's so funny to see all these english words popping up in polish and the reason always given to me is, "well we don't have a good word for it." well then, your language surely lacks a lot of words!

personally I think this is complete shiit. There are other words that can be used. Iceland is very conscious of maintaining its language and when faced with a new word- will actually adjust to make it Icelandic. For example- the word computer. Most languages use this word but in the Icelandic language they have a word which literally translates to "a box with numbers". Of course it is easier to use the word "computer" but when trying to keep a language from morphing into something else- why not go back to basics.

Poland doesn't need to use so many English words- but it is all about money and the perception that English words will make a person more western.

News / Polish Jesuits created a Facebook site for non-believers. Atheists not a total waste? [70]

Merged:

Facebook regional office in Poland

so far it is a secret as to where they will set up but Facebook is indeed setting up their regional office somewhere in Poland. Maybe a few jobs will open up for those that are in i.t.

...updated- I actually just saw they are looking at moving from Dublin to Wroclaw....not set in stone yet. That should surely **** off more Irish and create a bigger hate on for Poles.

USA, Canada / Why no Polish stuff in Chicago? [41]

Where as in the Polish areas, even people true to their heritage still want to be able to communicate so they can get better jobs.

I wonder if this holds true in the U.K?

News / Icy blast cleans the streets of the homeless in Poland.. [63]

When homelessness comes, it comes suddenly. Now Dworzec Centralny's been tarted up, I wonder where people will go at night to keep warm.

they take the subway to the end of the line in Kabaty. There is a dump of a former building that they sleep in now. They have fires going and they cook and drink and sleep around it. It is next to Kabaty forest close to Tesco.

It is really sad. They are clearly alcoholics and quite probably mentally ill. I see them walking a lot from the metro to the building with their stuff.
