News / Multi-culti (in Poland) -- roadmap to disaster? [344]

Good points. The Vietnamese have an economy on the rise, I have yet to hear about how the Vietnamese or Koreans have really brought down the neighborhood. I'm not saying it doesn't happen but if it does then it's a rarity. Let's be honest here, it is the Pakistani and Turkish from Asia and, if there are enough of them, almost any ethnicity from Africa that bring problems to a host nation. The Chinese and Indians are simply so numerous that it is hard not to imagine there being some global consequences down the road.

I do wonder what the attraction is for a Vietnamese to come to Poland. I hear the economy there is prospering but that's hearsay until I go there and see it for myself, is the economy here that much better or are they just adventurers? Are there an equal number of Poles who go there? Is Poland seen as a gateway into the E.U? If so, by whom?

News / Multi-culti (in Poland) -- roadmap to disaster? [344]

If the reason is in compliance with EU Law, where's the problem?

That's my point, there shouldn't be one if we are comparing one E.U. nationality's mobility within the Union with another one's. Pip, while making a fair point in one respect, is over-reaching when it comes to Poles and their culture. They have every right to keep it mono-cultural. Multiculturalism only works when minority cultures represent less than 1/1000. As long as there aren't communities of East Asians, Middle Easterners or Africans then things will go swimmingly. When there are enough of them in the same city, then they begin to all live in the same neighborhood (or rather "we" as it's the most instinctive thing to do), thereby they make increasingly less effort to assimilate. In fact they make a concerted effort to stand apart. End results right now are increasingly fragmented communities and less and less social cohesion.

People can wax on all they want about the benefits of multiculturalism but the detriments are more pronounced and long lasting.

Anyhow, I've yet to hear or read why it is anything other than retarded for a nation with as many unemployed as there are here to welcome in the 3rd world. If things go sour in the UK and Ireland then, you can expect another million or so back in Poland. The E.U. money being spent on the wages for infrastructure repair sure as hell should be spent on Polish labour or E.U. nationals labour.

News / Multi-culti (in Poland) -- roadmap to disaster? [344]

Poles don't get to double dip and then deny foreigners to their country.

Again what I feel you're overlooking is the fact that Poles are not some homogeneous mass of goop whereby what one person does dictates the formula for all the rest.

So 2 million Poles went to work in another E.U. state, that should in no way mean that the remaining 37 million have to allow anyone to come waltzing in and stay for whatever reason.

The second element that leads me to disagree with you is that you seem to feel that what happens within the E.U. must somehow extend beyond that. The politicians of England and Ireland, for whatever reasons, decided not to restrict worker rights from new member states. When Poles start heading off to India, Pakistan, Indonesia and other 3rd world countries then you'll have a point but that isn't the case right now.

*edit* My Lovely has arrived- I must retire.

They don't have to be tolerant of you Delphi, nor of me or any other foreigner. It's that simple, as guests, we must abide by the society we are in.

Polish immigration exists today- people are still immigrating from Poland to other countries. The day this stops is the day Poland has the right to refuse immigrants.

I have to completely disagree with you. If some Poles decide to live in another EU nation, others who stay are not obliged to welcome those outside the E.U.

The double standard that exists is beyond disgusting.

I agree that is a double standard but I am starting to think it isn't as stark as we would like to imagine.
If we are talking about E.U. multiculturalism, whereby all member state nationals are free to exist within the Union then is that different from welcoming in freeloaders from asia and africa? Are they free loaders? Are they a benefit to the economy? Do they bring something to the table that Poles don't in Poland? Or are they what the Poles were/are (less and less I hope) in western Europe, i.e. a group of people who'll work for less?

If we are talking about people who refuse to accept outsiders into Poland but feel the rest of the world is compelled to accept Poles then you have a point. However there are those who have never lived abroad nor do they intend to, are they hypocrites if they value Poland being as pure to Polish as it can be?

Looking at what's been the sentiment in the very multicultural England, I can't help but think it's as Angela Merkel termed it, a failure.

Road map to disaster? Why yes, yes it is.
Polish society is just fine being Polish and nothing less.
It's strange in that I have lived in both multicultural and mono-cultural societies and I know which one is VASTLY superior in terms of stability. That being said, the strange part I have to admit to is that there are people who feel the same yet are willing to physically ensure that is the case. Now, I ask myself where is the line between cowardice, standing up for your beliefs and savagery? Are they so easily drawn?

USA, Canada / Polish person in America (firing a gun for the first time) [18]

oh, I think it's a fortunate thing. C'mon, who'd be in charge of such a thing and how long would it take for the whole thing to be corrupted.

Now, firearms, it should mandatory that eveyone has access to those...

Interesting that society says it's ok for you to bring a life into the world and raise him contrary to the army's psych tests. Maybe you're just thoughtful and conscientious? Anyhow if firearms make you uneasy then it would seem keeping clear of them has kept you out of danger this long...

Work / Salary for Teaching EFL in Krakow [120]

Yeah, I think it should be more well-known amongst prospective students as to what percentage of a month's tuition goes into: rent; staff salary; teacher salary; owner's bank account. I think they'd be surprised and it would affect the market (but that's speculation, nothing more).

Work / Salary for Teaching EFL in Krakow [120]

I'll call bullsh!t on that one. There is no way that you are saving 1000zl a month if you earn 2500zl a month.

Depending on what his rent costs him, it is entirely feasible. I would not say it is feasible if I hadn't managed to do so myself. It really depends on what a person does with their time.

I think people, in this case esl teachers, accept such low wages here is due in large part to the Polish Managerial Mentality. Negotiations are impossible with someone who has this mentality.

If I want more money, they say "no."
I say but "you've raised your tuition costs for 3 years in a row."
They say "so?"
I say "if you get to make more then I get to make more."
They say "no."
I say "I'll leave with out a raise."
They say "ok." So I leave and then I hear about how hard it is for the owner or management to find "good people" and they feel "betrayed" I left them- WTF?

It seems owners are doing a very good job of taking the money and are getting ready to run. I've only worked for one school that gave raises and have never heard of someone getting a raise unless they took on new duties, which is like getting a raise but not exactly (another matter). A lot of teachers don't want to or dont know to or aren't confident enough to attract their own students. Couple these things together and you get quite a few young people accepting very low wages.

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

What do you mean by" pariahs immo?"

Well what I mean is, the people who buy existing properties in order to rent them out are leeches in my opinion. No value is added to society through such activity; though they may be calculating and see monetary gains through such activity, society suffers in the long run. Foreign or Domestic, I view such ways of generating income as detrimental to society and therefor immoral. Feel free to disagree, I don't want this to become an issue of discussion but you asked and I have answered:)

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

One question I have is whether the majority of residential property purchases have been made by speculators (pariahs imo) or by people legitimately investing in a home? My thinking is that the more of the latter, the more stable things ought to be but I must profess my ignorance outright on the entire subject:/

Travel / Watch out for airport personnel stealing stuff on regional Polish airports. [64]

I've heard about this happening in Toronto, I think there was a crackdown there a few years ago and it turned out mostly to be black immigrants from central america and caribbean countries.

What's a traveller to do? Is it legal to lock ones suitcase? What's stopping them from cutting the lock?

News / Will Poland ever host the Olympics? [18]

the winter olympic facilities as they are in the olympics can't be very useful to many of the locals afterwards, can they?
Curling
Bobsledding
Luge
Skeleton
Speed Skating
Hockey Arenas (ok in Slovakia yes but they'd need some massive arenas that would be hard to get to)

I see the winter olympics as a bad investment for a lot of places, that includes southern poland.

USA, Canada / Why are Polish restaurants not successful in the USA? [698]

modafinil

you're probably on to something there. another thing to ask is who the target customer should be:
blue collar workers
or families
or office workers at lunch (probably a bad idea there)
mall goers in a food court

...that's probably the biggest one to get right at the beginning.

Love / Polish women USED TO BE much more attractive: [162]

Marynka11

if you look anything remotely close to any of those women in the video then you have major issues with your diet. It's either caloric consumption or a lack of nutrients or both. Seriously find a video with men of similar stature similarly clad and you'll see what I mean. One difference will be the men won't have their guts held in via corset.

I'll watch it again and ask my better half what she thinks...

Marynka11

Ok I watched it again and she said, yeah some of those girls are fat. There are 3 that are in fact perfectly normal but reference these points for why I say some are, well, fat:

In order to gage if you're joking or not I have to ask you how much exercise or activity you do on a daily basis?

Examples please:

Seriously, imagine a group of men with similar body fat percentages and dressed them up in little swimming trunks or spandex bike shorts, I can't imagine such a group being considered anything but overweight.

USA, Canada / Why are Polish restaurants not successful in the USA? [698]

This is an utterly foolish argument that denies one-thousand years of Polish culinary tradition preceding 1945.

Dude! No one is around from that long ago and those that have such culinary knowledge are few and far between.
It seems the things which constitute modern Poland are in some ways very different from 1582 and cuisine is one of them.

Those "normal" looking girls are big. A few of them are just plain fat and out of shape. Note that I wrote "and" because the two can be exclusive of each other.

They (the ones in the shiny outfits) do not appear to be fit at all. Some were just blessed with the bone structure to carry the extra weight well.

Unfortunately more money equals more fat if health education doesn't exist.

I wholeheartedly disagree! It is a question of education on the matter. I don't want to say it's a question of intelligence but in a sense it is if we isolate the subject...:/

I am not suggesting that. I am suggesting they aren't on the average capable cook's repertoire for whatever reason. Compare what the average american can cook and then extrapolate that data into a similar scenario involving immigration and cuisine.

potatoes: thumb downno woman who wants to stay skinny eats any potatoes, same with bacon

That is just silly, besides fit and skinny are two different matters. If a woman simply wants to be skinny, then she's ignorant. If she wants to be fit then she shouldn't gorge herself with what she eats but enjoy her food and either before or after, enjoy some exercise.

No to fried? Learn how to do it properly and it's not an issue. I know more than a few professional and amateur athletes and not only is eliminating fried foods impractical but it's unnecessary. That kind of talk smacks of silly north american attitudes that there's some magic rule beyond: moderation; exercise; cooking with natural produce.

Valpomike, clearly you need to reread the first page of this thread.

Des Essientes

I don't know if he does or doesn't hate Poland but that's an entirely different conversation. Let's look at what is considered american cuisine for comparison.

I say american food and you say hotdogs, hamburgers etc.
In a sense delpi is right, those truckstop burgerjoints that dot the roads are more "Polish" than the recipes boletus mentioned. Ask yourself this: What do you think more Poles have experienced, boneless trout smoked on cedar served with horseradish and baked apple or a Mr. Hamburger?

Those dishes listed sound delightful but I suspect the majority of Poles have never tried them nor know anyone who knows how to prepare them well.
