Law / Investing money in Poland - what are the best areas / ways to invest private money? [23]

You don't come to a public, anonymous, forum and ask for professional advice.

However, my two cents. First you could speculate on the currency. Put the money in a Polish bank account and you get what is these days a fairly high interest rate (7%?). You could also buy Polish government bonds but I've no opinion on that.

A third option is buying property, apartments only I'd suggest. But yields are low and property prices falling so that not a very good idea at the moment - but it might be worthwhile long term (10years+)

Agricultural land is the big world wide trend, but thats more complex.

I am not giving you any sort of recommendations and I am not a professional, so don't act on my comments

News / British senior politician compares Poland to South Africa during apartheid [129]

Insults and slanders? You mean it isn't true that black players here may face racial abuse? Events in Krakow would show you to be a liar if you did make that claim.

I've personally been in in the stand at a First division match and listened to UK fans make monkey sounds at Black players for most of the match. So as disgusting as it is there is no way this is a Polish issue. Look at our resident Spaniard, he's as racist as they come -

Cry Sebastian Vettel, come on Kubica!!!

Racism in football is very widespread, but equating the racist attitude of a few morons to Apartheid is an insult to our intelligence.

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

Anyway, it is just not worth to waste time answering to stupid things

Thats probably a sensible attitude to take. Ignore the bullshit.

My take on it is, prices are falling so you may as well wait until they stop falling before even considering buying.

Travel / No warnings to soccer fans going to Euro 2012 about Polish drivers and Polish roads? [40]

Is it relevant?
I hardly see thousands of UK fans coming over here in their cars

Nope, don't see the English or Irish driving here.

Some people will be coming by car and, under the impression people drive on the right-hand side in Poland, will be unprepared for the Audi SUVs they'll meet driving on the left hand side towards them.

Not going to survive the Journey through France/Holland/Germany are they?

News / Poland's Economy Is Booming! The EU's Success Story? [711]

Or we could simply compare the Poland of now with the Poland of pre-EU times and see whether Poland would be better or worse off than it is now if it hadn't had at least 200 billion zloty injected into it.

Put it into perspective.

Poland's GDP growth due to investment is 0.7% (see previous post). Nice , but most the the GDP growth has come from exports and internal demand. Total GDP since EU Entry is about 12,600 billion pln (wild guesstimate), so the EU is responsible for about 1.5% of GDP since then.

However, Poland is in the EU and gets funds from it; you cannot separate it. Maybe without EU entry Polands economy would have done much better. Nobody will know for certain. 'Whats if's' are all well and good, but you can 'what if' an entire economy away until you have nothing left. Its meaningless, Poland is in the EU and gets EU funding.

Life / Which services is Poland still waiting for? [218]

There appear to be four in Krakow:

Then I stand corrected, can't believe I missed it in Galeria Krakowska given the amount of time I spend there.

Subway is in Poland and people buy it. They buy it because they think it is healthy- because more and more Poles believe what is advertised is true.

No Subway in Krakow that I'm aware of. However there are two French 'sandwich' shops. Think expensive (5pln croissants, 14pln for a tiny chocolate muffin. 7pln chocolate eclair), but delicious, French breads. croissants etc. Popular, but that maybe because its French.

I am not sure they would keep mosquitoes out - they seem to come in anyway from somewhere, as do moths,

The mosquito problem in Wroclaw in my experience is awful.

You obviously have a vent/window open somewhere else, they can't get through the screen if its installed right (and it has to be fixed to the Velcro all around the window - absolutely no gaps).

I've had no problem with Mosquito's this year, unlike the last two years

consider yourself lucky. my wife and i used to wake up in the morning in Wroclaw covered in welts from mosquitos, not to mention lose sleep because we'd hear them buzzing right over our heads waiting to land on a fresh piece of meat. it was ridiculous.

Why didn't you put a screen up. They cost about 10pln and can be fitted in minutes.

History / Why WERE Those Death Camps Built in Poland, Then? [47]

My wife's grandfather was in Auschwitz. The fact was that the allies knew about the extermination policy and Polands government was in LONDON, as was its army (the army from the east was in Africa). How on earth do you think Poland, which effectively didn't exist, was supposed to do anything. Six million Poles dies in the war, don't you think maybe 'Poland' tried to stop that??

You really should read up about what happened in Poland. And take into account, that in Eastern Poland, where most of the Jews were, almost the entire population of Poles were deported to 'Siberia' before the Germans invaded Russia. Long before the Germans started the final solution, the Poles were dying in communist concentration camps.

History / Why WERE Those Death Camps Built in Poland, Then? [47]

We hold Poland with shame and pity in our hearts, not with anger.

You are aware that the Poles brought the death camps to the attention of the American's and British in, what '43??.

The USA, the UK and American Jewery made a deliberate decision to do nothing. A few years ago the New York Times made a front page apology for hiding the Holocaust from America.

Blaming Poland, which was occupied and being systematical exterminated, for abandoning anyone is ridiculous.

Lots of Jews in Poland = Kill them in Poland

and

Lots of catholic Poles in Poland = Kill them in Poland

Reading the wiki article explains it in detail.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auschwitz_concentration_camp

For instance, a 40km area around the camps were emptied of the local population, presumable so they couldn't be witnesses (smoke/smell).

This ignores the camps that were in Germany. The German locals didn't appreciate have stinking concentration camp.

News / Poland's Economy Is Booming! The EU's Success Story? [711]

Poland has been warned by the EU since 1994 (the magical year in your eyes) for subsidising state industry and therefore creating unfair competition within the EU,

No, EU entry was 2004. Any violation after that would be a issue, however, give me some examples of state subsidies today and how they might affect jobs in future as you claimed.

It seems that Poles will loving hold out their hands to EU money with very little in return

Sorry to disappoint you but this is what the EU is all about, Bringing all the countries up to the standards; Spain, Ireland, Greece, Italy etc all had funds to repair/build/improve their infrastructure. This policy works. Germany has a huge market to sell its goods and the standard of living in the poorer countries has increased considerably. In return Ireland, for instance, is now in a position to contribute funds to the EU after 20 years of hand outs (bailout notwithstanding).

If you don't like the EU, tough ****.

Now, if you had said, European Polglish like "chipsy" or U.S. Polish like "golumpkies", you'd maybe be on to something.

The Poles returning from the UK have a whole Polglish terminology for business/work that only they understand, apparently.

History / Why WERE Those Death Camps Built in Poland, Then? [47]

It was a logistical problem. the Final Solution was to over come the difficulty of killing so many people.

The Germans choose a place with good railway connections with the rest of Europe and sparse local population - that could be reduced further - so there were few witness.

Poland was also a good choice, because after the Jews, the catholic Poles and other Slavs were going to the gas chambers. Poland's population was going to be reduced by 90%.

Stalin use a similar idea, but different execution. He worked people to death so even in death they were useful. 50% death through starvation/exhaustion/exposure per year has the advantage of not looking like deliberate genocide and simply bad luck.

News / Don't go to Poland ... because you could end up coming back in a coffin [313]

Easy to see why Sol Campbell made his moments and why travel agents are reporting a lack of interest in this years Euros...

UK Footbal fans are not coming because of the ridiculous costs involved with vastly separated hosting cities and the dire reputation of Ukraine. Nothing to do with racism and certainly nothing to do with Sol Campbell words. British fans will tend to view this not as an highlight on Poland but an attack on Football and football fans.

My concern is the negative effect on Poland's image to not fans and the fact that allowing this sort of **** is moronic.

the ship yards arnt subsidised?

Published 07 November 2008

Liar.

is Szczecin shipyard even government owned anymore??

freepl.info/637-who-took-over-szczecin-shipyard

Agreements concerning the sale of assets of Gdynia and Szczecin shipyards were signed 19 June 2009. The tenders and auctions for the assets of Stocznia Szczecinska Nowa Sp. z o.o. and Stocznia Gdynia S.A. conducted by the Compensation Manager were finally brought to the end. The most valuable assets of the shipyards were sold to investors who won the respective tenders and auctions. Only low-value, insignificant groups of assets were left unsold. The assets required by shipyards to maintain their operation were purchased by a single investor, acting through Stichting Particulier Fonds Greenrights on behalf of United International Trust N.V. The investor declared a will to maintain and continue the construction of marine vessels. Stichting Particulier Fonds Greenrights ? the investor who acquired key assets of the Gdynia and Szczecin shipyards in May 2009, received guarantees from Qatar Islamic Bank, in agreement with Qinvest LLC seated in Doha. QIB is one of the biggest banks in all Arab states, operating among others in Europe and Asia. Qinvest LLC is one of the largest investment banks in Qatar. A 25% stake in Qinvest LLC is owned by QIB.

What subsidise's to state enterprises? you are talk about the hypothetical, the government is getting large dividends from its companies.

Unemployment is going down and the economy is growing - they don't have to subsidise.

News / Poland's Economy Is Booming! The EU's Success Story? [711]

gain you are selecting part figures i could select the best period from any country. I was comparing above the figs 1999-2011 with all countries in the EU.

You picked ONE year for comparison, ignoring all the intervening years.

There is only ONE year - 1999 - in the period 1997-2011 when the % age figure was higher than today. the economy in that time has risen by around 200%.

EU funds started in 2004. However, Poland was getting aid BEFORE it joined the EU

http://www.google.com/publicdata/explore?ds=d5bncppjof8f9_&met_y=ny_gd p_mktp_cd&idim=country:POL&dl=en&hl=en&q=poland+gdp#!ctype=l&strail=fa lse&bcs=d&nselm=h&met_y=aid_flows_at_constant_us&scale_y=lin&ind_y=fal se&rdim=region&idim=country:POL&ifdim=region&hl=en_US&dl=en&ind=false

Indeed, the fall in Employment after 1999 before 2004 shows a general trimming of state industries. But Poland still has a lot of state controlled industry (ship yards, coal mines, railways etc) which are massively overstaffed. These large public industries will shed a fair amount of staff in the next year or two to get the governments borrowing down. Unemployment will start to rise then.

Random specualtion and the opinions. We will see, as you know privatizations have advantages for the economy, as Maggie F***ing ***** Thatcher proved.

News / Poland's Economy Is Booming! The EU's Success Story? [711]

Employment since 2004 has gone up from 51.7 to 59.7, a major rise at the time of emigration and economic growth.

EU entry date is the starting reference as its a major change in Poland's economy, not 1997.

Basically employment has increase for a decade. Another sign of economic growth
