USA, Canada / Texas Silesian Language [13]

I stumbled across this -

Texas Silesian (Silesian: teksasko gwara) is a language used by Texas Silesians in American settlements from 1852[1] to the present. It is a variant of Silesian derived from the Opole dialect. The dialect evolved after Silesian exile around the village of Panna Maria.[2] It contains a distinctive vocabulary for things, which were unknown for Polish Silesians.[3]

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_Silesian

Very curious - does anyone know any more?

Genealogy / My dad's last name was Polak - Do I look in any way Polish? [57]

and Silesian language can be perfectly treated as a Polish dialect and it only depends on your political stance if you must say it is a dialect or a language in it's own right)

To be fair, many languages used to be treated as just dialetics in the past. But yes, recognition of a language often depends merely on political stance.

Having said this, there's no harm if they want to have their own language.

Work / My friend is looking for a job in Poland with a physics degree [32]

Unfortunately we're in Poland and that doesn't count for squat. (Delph et all, please bear with me while I speak my lingo.)

I'm bearing with you ;)

And yes, you're spot on the money. The university you attend doesn't really count for much here, unless it's something that absolutely everyone knows of (Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge).

I even know someone who struggled after graduating from MIT - HR people in Poland were simply throwing the CV's in the bin because it was "only" an undergraduate degree - despite the great name that it has, it meant nothing in the eyes of Polish HR drones who could only see the title and not the qualification.

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

That's absolutely bollocks, to say the least.

If they had fallen 44%, I'd be straight to the bank to ask for another mortgage as the prices would be laughably low given that the average wage here is now well over 4000zl/month.

Prices have fallen in Poznan by around 10% or so since the peak. Entirely expected, and given the continued sharp climb in wages, nothing out of the ordinary.

Law / Exchanging a foreign / international driver's license to Polish ... [12]

wouldn't I just be able to translate my American prawo jazdy into Polish?

No. You need a specific document called an IDP - and as you already know, only the AAA can issue one for an American licence.

There's no other way, unless you choose to exchange your US licence for a Polish one and pass the theory test. Even then, it isn't a certainty that they will exchange it - it depends on whether your licence conforms to certain international standards. Poland is rather strict on this.

Contact the local WORD for more details.

Work / My friend is looking for a job in Poland with a physics degree [32]

However, one thing that separates him from Poles with physics degrees is that he studied at a very prestigious school. I don't think any Polish schools come close to CalTech. He's had no trouble whatsoever finding a good-paying job in America.

It's meaningless in Poland.

He doesn't speak the language, and that's all that matters. In fact, he's underqualified by Polish standards - even by European standards, he would be expected to have an MSc before going into the workplace.

At the end of the day, why bother with a foreigner who needs a work permit when you can hire someone just as good locally?

UK, Ireland / Unemployed Poles in Ireland : a crash course in milking the system [323]

who are not legally allowed to work until their application for asylum is processed. (Which is pretty stupid btw).

Same stupidity there?

There was a well known case in Glasgow where a Bosnian doctor (with quite an impressive history) wasn't allowed to work, despite him being very willing to start working straight away - and the NHS wanted him. Absolutely absurd.

I'd actually say that the willingness of an asylum seeker to work should have an impact on the decision.

UK, Ireland / Increasingly more Polish children born and educated in UK can't write/read! [51]

the truth is many Polish parents in the UK are failing their children by not getting involved in their education and are too busy critising the school because poor little Piotr was in the playground without his coat on.

I believe you, actually.

Polish parents tend to be horribly focused on superficial things and not on the things that matter - the example of the "OMG MY CHILD WAS OUTSIDE WITH NO COAT ON" is spot on. The same nonsense is seen with the demanding of grades and results.

Always wondered how Polish children cope with the much harsher stance on cheating in UK schools, actually.

History / Lech Kaczynski - was he a good leader? [88]

Funny how so many people across the pond seem to believe that he's in the running for anything other than a footnote in Polish history.

Strange, isn't it?

It's much to do with the way that he's reported - he's always described as "Solidarity, Church and Conservative" which no doubt appeals to them. I reckon most of them if they actually knew anything about him would run a mile - especially once they discovered just how socialist his views are.

Those of us living here know that he's really none of those things.

History / Lech Kaczynski - was he a good leader? [88]

(soon-to-be Great Leader)

He already is!

Interestingly, he doesn't want to be President anymore. Just the Prime Minister, though he offered no useful ideas on how he might become one.

History / Lech Kaczynski - was he a good leader? [88]

As for him retiring, I suspect the decision will be made for him.

It really does look like he's determined to either win or bring the party down with him. PiS need a new leader, desperately (the maniacs will follow Ziobro, who is far more capable of radicalising them) - someone who can actually oppose. It's actually incredible how little political talent PiS have - even the SLD are doing a better job right now.

Their total failure to present viable reform plans for pensions says it all - the SLD's call for a referendum was far more sensible.

Genealogy / Being ashamed of Polish ancestry? [156]

HAHA please seek treatment.

Too mild, I prefer

"please **** off and crawl back under the rock that you came from" :)

you should not post representation
on this board of yourself as the ultimate POLISH AMERICAN when you clearly stink at it!!

Thank you - this is exactly what I've been getting at on this forum.

All this "better than you" crap from Polonius is doing nothing but making Polish-Americans seem like ignorant idiots who spend their days hanging about in meat markets. And yes, I know fine well that they don't, but others don't know that.

Genealogy / Being ashamed of Polish ancestry? [156]

It was all rather nice until you woke up, wasn't it Polonius?

but back when contiguous Polish neighbourhoods existed food quality and eating habits were way above the Heinz 57 level.

Will you stop with that Heinz 57 reference? It's rather strange to call others that when Poland was about as ethnically diverse as it gets.

You had to go to a Polish bakery to get real bread with a shiny crackly crust, a pleasantly rye-tinged aroma and a nice springy body on the inside, instead of that hideous cotton fluff stuff Anglos call 'white bread'.

I've just been on a small tour of Europe and Poland is hardly unique when it comes to bread.

You clearly haven't seen the Polish masses in McDonalds.

Genealogy / Being ashamed of Polish ancestry? [156]

When it's used as a stick to beat others with, it's certainly not something to celebrate.

Calling someone "Heinz 57" is about as ridiculous as it gets, especially when it comes from the mouth of someone who is likely to be a bit of a ethnic mongrel anyway.

Genealogy / Being ashamed of Polish ancestry? [156]

Of course he is.

Unlike those ashamed of or uncomfortable with their Polish heritage, I have always been proud of it and have even felt superior compared to other American kids.

Superior based on what?

Even something as basic as getting presents right after Wigilia supper, when the poor 200% American kids had to wait till Christmas morning, made me feel privileged.

Yet on Christmas Day, while the other kids were getting to play with their presents, you had nothing to get up for.

And the lavish Polish-American wedding

You mean the "dreadful, tasteless, over the top display of garishness and debt"?

outshone the cheap low-key affairs of many Heinz 57s (the term for WASP-imitating Americans) serving just champagne and gummy little canapés.

Heinz 57? That certainly fits in with your

ubermenschen

ideals.

. And the tradition of struggle 'for your freedom and ours' is another thing to be proud of.

You mean the same way that 2 million Poles collaborated with the PRL state?

Nice to know that you subscribe to the ideals of clean healthy living, racial purity and so on.

History / Poland did reasonably well in land terms out of the postwar settlement [270]

Definitions aside when you mention "ethic cleansing "people understand it as 'killing people'.

Not really - the Highland Clearances are considered to be ethnic cleansing nowadays.

How it's achieved is largely irrelevant - the point is that a group of people are forcibly removed from their home area.

Operation Wisła was certainly ethnic cleansing, too.

News / Becoming non-EUnuch -> giving up your share of handouts. [36]

For instance produce, if I can buy lettuce from Poland when the zloty is 0.30 to the dollar why buy from Greece when the Euro is 1.30 to the dollar. I can buy a lot more Polish lettuce with that exchange rate.

However, it doesn't work like that in practice - most European currencies (except the Pound and the Swiss Franc) tend to rise and fall along with the Euro. So while Polish lettuce might be cheaper now, it's due to lower labour costs, not because of being outside the Euro.

Europe misses a strong England to counter weight Germany.

Why does Germany need a counterweight?

You see the same nonsense among some Poles in the UK - they claim to have "forgotten" Polish and that they couldn't possibly go back.

Much of it appears to be rather queer bravado.

USA, Canada / Polonia who needs help with Polish Documentary [27]

For general modern history of Poland, Timothy Garton-Ash takes some beating.

He seems to be totally ignored by Poles, but he is far more of a historian than Davies ever will be. His book on Solidarity should be

I am Polish, my family studies its genealogy very well and everyone born before me was born in Poland

If they studied it "very well", they'd know that there's no possible way that everyone before you was born in Poland.

I want to find out more about the hooligan groups, their roots, their history, the people involved, and how many extremist ideologies seem to tie in with it all.

If you want to find out about them, you need to meet them.

But I would strongly urge you not to get involved with such a topic unless you really know what you're doing.

Life / Moving to Poland - Wrocław/Gdańsk? [11]

Is it a good location for tech? I thought it was more trade oriented.

Sure, La Roche Hoffman are here (with - at the last count - 600 working in IT), as are Allegro, plus quite a few other fairly large operations.

Work / Minimum basic salary in Poland [96]

but there are many people that I have come across that just want a 9 to 5 park your brain kind of job.

And they want to paid handsomely for it, too. They don't want to have to work hard (and god forbid, some unsociable hours/overtime) - but they want all the benefits. And they complain like hell when employers (already unimpressed with their lack of work ethic) deny them the 2nd of May off, for instance.

why should somebody straight out of school make that much money. nobody, anywhere in the world, makes a huge salary straight out of school. It takes time, dedication and experience. It takes a willingness to resign from a holiday the first few years in order to prove oneself and work the way up the corporate ladder. That is just the way it goes.

No no no. They want it NOW.

I've only ever met one person who was rising through the corporate ranks and only working 40 hours a week. The guy is a machine at work, getting everything done and more - but crucially, he doesn't mess around at work. No messing around with "second breakfast" or taking odd days off to give him long holidays - but he only works 40 hours and that's it. And he's respected for it - he doesn't come up with excuses for not doing something.

Poland doesn't have class barriers or shady interviews to gain entrance to the best universities - it's a very open society. It's there if you want it - there's no such thing as "your face doesn't fit", and no-one is particularly bothered if someone comes from the village or the city - it's all about the person, not their background. That's why there's absolutely no excuse for someone not to do something with themselves - and if they were too stupid to do anything else with themselves, they have no-one to blame but themselves.

Poland seems to be very like America in this respect to me. You want a high salary? Go out there and get it.
