Life / Which Dentist is the best for Bridges & Crowns in Poland ? [13]

about 4,000 for a three-tooth unit)

Having a jar with a pal of mine, I complained that last week I paid 450PLN to have a broken crown replaced. I felt a bit better when he told me he'd recently paid 4500 for bridgework in Sopot.

Life / Life in Poland - feeling lonely and don't want to socialize much! (anyone feeling same?) [93]

Tiger prawns and calamari are easy to find, though the former are pricey. Outside the big cities Indian restaurants are very, very rare. Lidl used to sell Irish curries (!) during British week which were very nice, but for some reason they don't now. Similarly, for about a year Biedronka had pretty good curry and rice, but not now. Curry powder is easy enough to find, but not great. Curry sauces are available in good shops like Piotr i Paweł, and you can, I believe, buy Rajah or Sharwoods stuff online. Harry's yer man for online shopping for British goods. Perhaps he'll give you some advice once he's out of the hands of the doctors.

Ah, lamb. Lamb is not easy to get hold of in Poland. The other day I bought four tiny frozen NZ lamb cutlets from Biedronka for 20PLN. Lidl sometimes carries lamb. Makro has it for silly money. From time to time I get some through a vet contact or from someone in my village. Mutton is easier, or less difficult, to find. Lamb kebabs? Forget it. I used to use a Turkish restaurant that mixed mutton with veal for its kebabs, which worked quite well. As with everything else, the bigger cities have more of everything, so you could go to one with a cool box and stock up. I have twice bought half a lamb, butchered it (ineptly), and frozen it. Ask around. Sometimes a farmer will kill a lamb to order.

Life / Life in Poland - feeling lonely and don't want to socialize much! (anyone feeling same?) [93]

The thing I'm dreading is that by living in LA we do have great weather.

Be prepared for up to five months of cold weather, and temperatures of minus 25 or even colder (the coldest I've experienced is minus 35). I like winter in Poland, but some things are not so enjoyable: shovelling snow for two hours, and then waking up next day to find the same amount has fallen overnight; keeping the house warm if you don't use expensive oil or gas; driving on ice and snow; wearing a ton of clothes; women disappearing under a ton of clothes for half the year.

In summer the weather can be hot and sunny, but if you want that all the time, Poland is not the best place.

News / LGBT hate speech to be banned in Poland [208]

This is interesting. It contains historical depictions of heterosexual anal play going back to 3rd century Peru, and also statistics from surveys, e.g. the Universitiy of Chicago's sex in America (1994), which found 10% of men and 9% of women claiming to have had anal sex druing the past year. Another survey in 2000 found 32% of women had anal sex. You might not like it, but it happens.

News / LGBT hate speech to be banned in Poland [208]

Describing various homo sex practices accurately but in graphic detail which might seem disgusting to faint-hearted heteros --

Polonius, there is nothing that homosexual men do in bed that heterosexual couples don't.

UK, Ireland / Polish candidate for London mayor to represent 2nd-class citzens [26]

The imperialist mentality, Polonius? You have clearly never lived among ordinary British people, who are incredibly tolerant and accepting. Imaging a million Brits suddenly arriving in Poland, or even the USA. Would they get the same welcome Poles in the UK have received? That this rich fantacist quotes such a jerk as Farage just shows how out of touch he really is.

Sorry that reality doesn't fit the American stereotype of top hatted imperialists, but there it is. Perhaps a trip to the UK would open your eyes a bit.

UK, Ireland / Polish candidate for London mayor to represent 2nd-class citzens [26]

If it's true that he felt like a second class citizen, even though he was born in the UK, that says more about him than about British society. It sounds like he has a massive chip on his shoulder. As a Londoner, I've known and worked with hundreds of people who found their home there, and while some of the non-white ones may have experienced racism, they never claimed to have been very discriminated against. For someone born there to speak like this is very strange.

I've just seen a couple of YT clips about this guy. He styles himself Prince. I can't see many London Poles voting for him, let alone anyone else.

Life / How much money should I save to move to Poland? [17]

Davey, when does your contract start? Is the school sorting out your papers? Will they help you find a place to live? Will they pay enough? More details = more advice.

Same crappy furniture as in Europe... :)

IKEA has really cracked its market. Sure, if you are a prosperous middle-aged couple furnishing your upmarket home, you'll go for solid wood, but for young people on a budget IKEA sells the most stylish of the cheap MDF furniture available. (Just keep the kids away from their Malm range.)

Life / Car insurance in Poland: where's the best place to get it? [19]

Just thought I'd drop in to give an update. Today I bought insurance for an X-Type Jag of a certain age I just treated myself to. Impressed with Harry's experience with Axa, I went to my agent. She put in my details, but AXA wanted 800-odd PLN for OC (including 150PLN glass insurance). Here's why:

Last year an old bag t-boned me as I overtook her. My insurers (Interisk) refused to pay her claim against my policy and she took them to court, where, in the face of expert opinion to the effect that her version of events was physically impossible, the judge found in her favour. The next time I paid my premium I still had my 60% NCB, so I thought all was well. Today it transpired that AXA's program saw what had happened in court and lopped 30% off my NCB. So, I stayed with Interisk, kept my 60% NCB, and paid 491PLN for OC, including 120PLN for glass insurance, so 371PLN for the basic deal. The lesson is that regardless of the rights or wrongs, if a court finds against you or your insurer, you will lose if you change firms.

News / Poland have the 3rd best Education System of Europe [49]

Levi, do you actually have any experience of the Polish education system, or the "failed" British system? I'm having difficulty in reconciling the reality I know with your blind prejudice.

News / Poland have the 3rd best Education System of Europe [49]

My Polish wife never attended Religious Education classes at school. She is unindoctrinated. I, on the other hand, was thoroughly indoctrinated, first by barely sane Irish nuns, and then by perpetually ill-humoured Marist fathers. Guess who is the more balanced of the two of us.

News / Presidential elections and debates 2015 Poland [472]

I seem to have touched a nerve, Polonius. Otherwise you might have answered my specific question. Those of us who live here in Poland, and love the country, warts and all, feel, well, some us, that romantic Americans with Polish roots should either come and live here, and contribute, or stfu.

Would you agree that a person should be able to claim US citizenship because of their ancestry, despite never having lived there, and should be entitled to vote in US elections?
