Travel / Poland in photo riddles [3134]

what ingredients are you making them with?

Raw seasoned meat, finely grated potato, held together with a little potato flour, boiled then fried. According to Babcia ;-)

edit:

I think it's a different thing though, but all i find out is that the shape is different :/

kartacze

Babcia says it has three different names base on where you reside in PL. But I was close with the spelling!

Is it called pyzy in Poznan?

But it is kolduny in Bialystok. But in Canada, the potatoes come out kind of greyish...

edit 2) AKA Kartaczy ?

Off-Topic / Does anyone else find Cygans fascinating? [60]

Well, Canada ain't quite America on so many levels, but we recently changed our visitor visa policy because lot of "Czech" folks were claiming refugee status...

The Czech Republic is the second main source of refugee claims. Since Canada lifted visa requirements on Czech nationals in 2007, nearly 3,000 claims have been lodged, compared with just five in 2006.

Almost all the claimants are members of the Roma or gypsy minority, fleeing what they say is persecution in the Czech Republic where there has been a sharp rise in far-right extremism.

I would have guessed that too, but then I thought it was just a giant windbreak for the playground ;-)

Food / Is Polish food still more natural than in the West? [142]

Hmmm...something wrong with this statement.

; )

I don't think so. There is a difference between "processed" meat and cured / marinated meats. Processed foods are high in preservatives, msg, chemicals, filler, water, etc. I wouldn't call a nice polewica or proscuitto processed...

Life / Poland, maybe the world's last bastion of faith [67]

What is your explanation of the deterioration we are now experiencing?

What deterioration? Our society is progressing nicely, thanks!

UK, Ireland / Ive been in the UK for 6 days to relocate and im going back to Poland. [281]

if you could live next to an open-cast mine, or you could get it all from abroad for cheaper, which would you choose? ;)

I am of two minds on this issue, and can't see it as black or white....

Living in the expanse known as Canada, we are truly blessed with an abundance of natural resources. Fortunately, most of the population is concentrated in the south, along the US border. Ergo, most of the natural resources to be exploited tend to be north of the population band. As a city slicker, I don't have to live on top of an open pit mine, so it is not really a consideration. I am in favour of the employment opportunities that such abundant resources have the potential to generate, but am aware of the implications for the environment as a whole. I am also price conscious when it comes to shopping, but am aware of the negative fiscal impact of buying cheap imported stuff has on our local citizens. I want them to earn a decent wage, in a safe environment, so they too can go home safely to their families each night, and are aware such considerations are not taken in those economies deemed as cheap.

So, all that said, I would want to buy it at home first, if I was forced to make a choice. That choice might be different if I were in a smaller, more densely populated European country.

Most people are happy to have the mines closed (who wants mines? terrible things) and the work sent abroad, really.

Agreed.

Rebar in bridges, nails holding your home together, the train/plane/automobile/ship that brought MG (tiens.) to IRL, copper plumbing, silver solder for printed circuit boards, hydro-electric transmission wires that keep the lights on and the computer running. All over rated. Hell if the taliban can live without it all, why can't we? :-)

If she was so good, why was the unemployment rate much higher than it was before she came to power? Why was there so much social unrest? Surely not because her politics were so equal towards all Brits, small and large. I think her symapthies went more to the large ones than to the small ones.

Not a professor of UK History, but the following comes to mind...

"Some times the best medecine tastes the worst"?

UK, Ireland / Homeless Poles living on barbecued rats and alcoholic handwash? [62]

Vladimir Lipsky, 40, came from Poland in 2005. Last week he bedded down under a flyover in east London – and slept with one eye open to avoid being pelted by stones hurled by local children. "These kids attack us for no reason. No money. No life. What have I done to them?"

Is that really a Polish Name?

I am familiar with your train of thought. But it is like your home having an overflowing toilet and a fire in the kitchen at the same time. If you pay attention to the overflowing toilet and make good progress on preventing it from flooding the floor, running into the basement causing water damage etc, the kitchen fire can become an even bigger problem at a rate that makes it impossible to deal with...

Im hopeful of change, however slow it may be, the UK is not ready to give yet and let the animals run the zoo!

But if the change for the negative is happening faster than the change for the positive, it doesn't look good.

didn't react to situations as we should, but this is being dealt with.

I hope so. It would suck to see such a nation go down the drain.

I am glad when I see certain things thriving in the UK, like our ale and pub cultures. However, that only goes so far. A pint of Deuchars or top ale is just that.

Something about somebody fiddling while Rome Burns? Or was that Robbie Burns....

It is interesting to see how those living in a situation can't (or fail to) see the minute changes that happen slowly over time, that to somebody coming back after a long absence, picks up on immediately.

Whatever your decision WB, good luck.
