History / The good deeds of other Nations to the Pole's [3]

Plus many families in the UK, of which Sue Ryder's is among the best known, who helped refugees who had fled from the Endecja regime back in the 30s.

Food / Which Polish milk brand is closest to UK supermarket style milk? [31]

i guess the supply chain doesn't keep it properly refridgerated.

The shops sometimes keep it on the shelves until it's all sold, despite having a new delivery going sour in the back room.

The best Polish milk is probably "Zimne mleko"

Most shops don't sell it.

The stuff in the bags is usually OK, but as I mentioned, you'll need the 3.6% stuff.

Buy the stuff in plastic bottles rather than the cartons of Uht. You'll find it in the chiller cabinet near the yoghurt etc. One brand is much the same as any other, however if you want something like Blue Top, you'll need to buy the 3.6% fat milk.

News / Jaruzelski dead / his legacy in Poland [116]

There's some debate on the internet about whether or not the rumour's true. If he isn't dead, he's certainly at death's door.

He'll be missed by some and definitely not missed by others. Whatever you think, it's a chapter in Polish history closed.

UK, Ireland / British or polish Passport ' Advice feedback [47]

OH dear someone has chip on their shoulder I feel....

Quite. Gary Glitter indeed!

I'm in a similar situation to you, except the places we want to travel to are restricted by my partner's passport. A nuisance.

UK, Ireland / British or polish Passport ' Advice feedback [47]

Don't be silly. The facts speak for themselves.

And who's talking about kidnapping?

You'd be doubtless dismayed at the number of Poles who've gone to the UK who are queuing for a British passport for themselves and especially for their kids at the earliest opportunity.

In my work, I hire people from many countries in the world. People with certain passports are at a definite disadvantage since above a certain level in the company people have to attend meetings in different countries. Not much point hiring someone if they have to apply for a visa for a 3 day business trip.

News / demonstration; What is Nowa Prawica? [30]

but there is something feminine in seeing a woman do it

You mean you associate it with women.

much like woman knitting or sawing,

Nothing to stop a man knitting or a woman picking up a saw and sawing wood. Or metal.

It is the same when men is able to fix something in a house or knows about cars or is athletic and does sports

Plenty of women can do that. Some of them even dare to play sports.

they seem more feminine

You mean they seem less threatening to you.

Well nothing stops men from learning how to cook...

As far as I know, ability (or desire) to cook has nothing to do with gender.

so without further ado here is the less known Mr Janusz Korwin-Mikke

"Less known"?? He's considerably better known here. And laughed at.

Ron Poul and Janusz Korwin-Mikke.

Did this Poul person also stab himself in a restaurant toilet and pretend it was the work of a mystery Chinese assailant?

a political preformer

He doesn't 'preform' anything. All he really does is make a disgrace of himself. Like the stabbing incident.

This website might be worth a look. I've used them before:

Locked up? but where?

In his case a mental hospital would be a good bet, which was where his fellow extremist Leszek Bubel ended up.

In this case though, Archyski was referring to the mob of hooligans who have lately tried to hijack the Independence Day celebrations in order to generate maximum disruption.

Life / Business customs in Poland - liquor gift, courtesy toward women [9]

I'm wondering if it's ok to bring some scotch as a gift for my potential business partner?

No. Unless you know them. Poland does have high levels of spirit consumption however it is also more puritanical than you might have heard about alcohol. In any case, your business contact might be a sober alcoholic going to AA meetings and who smashes the place up after one sniff of a wine gum.

If you want to bring alcohol, try a couple of bottles of good (very good) English wine.

My another doubt is about kissing the woman's hand... A friend of mine told me it's customary in Poland...s

Don't do it - it's old fashioned and would look strange. It's mostly done ironically nowadays or by the over 85s.

shall I hold the door for my female friend or will it be taken as an offence?

No problem holding doors open or not holding them open - Poland is just the same as the UK in that respect.

Wait until you come and play it by ear.

News / Little statistics about immigrants in Poland. Employment and job prospects. [25]

everybody is happier when living among their own kind, because that is the natural thing to do. Multiculturalism is an evil, not a good.

Speak for yourself.

Here in Warsaw we have a healthy increase in immigration since Poland's temporary isolation of the PRL years ended and 'everybody' is neither happier nor less happy.

There is no such thing as "racism",

Most people would disagree with you there.

cannot be a part of Polish character.

Whoever said it was or wasn't?

That whole post, so many contradictions that it makes no sense strongly suggests a certain amount of Easter Day liquid celebration.

A clown is the right description. Do you remember when he stabbed himself and told the media it was done by a mystery Chinese assailant.

Pluses and minuses for everything everywhere. You can't turn the clock back though and the world is getting smaller. It's important to see the good things that change brings instead of festering away, sniping and grumbling about the loss of a past that never happened anyway.

News / Poland and Kresy being reunited? [162]

You are engaging in forming of a theory without firm evidence.

No harm in that - there's all sorts of wild and weird things here, mostly from neo-nationalists and their feeble-minded ilk. This is not however one of those. It is a matter that has been extensively studied.

And back to topic: Silesia is Polish, because Poles live there. And the Western Ukraine is Ukrainian, because Ukrainians live there. Period.

Indeed.

Life / International newspaper availability in Gdansk? [21]

I would check the Central Railway Station in Gdańsk as wel

They don't stock much there.

In an EMPiK store you should ask at their information desk which, if any, international daily papers they stock in Gdańsk.

All the newspapers are put out on display.

The French language press is now much less available in Poland than it once was.

5 star hotels usually stock Le Monde Diplomatique and occasionally Liberation.

UK, Ireland / Do people in Poland live "better" than here in the UK? [150]

The majority of bread in the UK is made with the Chorleywood process

A post-war thing at a time when industrialisation became increasingly common. Go to smaller shops rather than buy supermarket muck. Same in Poland where the best seller is an industrialised bread made from liquid yeast, called Baltonowski.

I eat neither.

Something similar happened in the war when cheese production was standardised - now this has changes and there are 300+ varieties. In Poland it's still nearly all factory made.
