Life / Do Poles drink before noon? [95]

It is when Polonian relatives are coming from America, everybody takes a day off from work to make them feel welcome, contemted, feted and at home. Thy recall old times round the tbale, chat, joke, socialise and raise a toast or two becuase...chluśniem bo uśniem!

I really do wonder what kind of circles you move in if you think people take a day off work just because of some relatives visiting. And still, drinking hard spirits at 10 or 11 is nothing less than alcoholism.

Swype does that sometimes.

I really don't like Swype, am I the only one?

and naturally a ruby-red nalewka in a crystal decanter poured into crytsal shot glasses

What kind of people are you associating with that would pour nalewka for breakfast?!

Life / Do Poles drink before noon? [95]

I dunno if its a Anglo-Saxon concept but drinking in the morning makes one feel a bit ill.

I used to do it on occasion as a student, but well - those days are behind me!

Here in Poland, daytime drunkenness is frowned upon nowadays - tramps, dole chavs and people on PGRs might do it but woe betide anyone who comes to work drunk.

Likewise - even turning up with a hangover is quite frowned upon where I work.

precisely which ethnic group do you mean.

He's claimed Moldovan, Bolivian and now Belarusian. It would seem that he's even confused about his own lies.

Assume whatever you like, it's no skin off of my *****. You can deny, dodge and meander till you're blue in the face, but refuse to acknowledge what most Poles know for a fact: The GW crowd is 'them', not 'us, and it ain't Belarusians that are calling the shots!

If it was such a fact, why are we asking you for the 29th time for a single reliable source for the following statements made by you on this thread?

That is only a partial list because many others are in denial and hiding behind good Polish-sounding names

If it's such a fact, why are you failing to provide a single source?

Life / Do Poles drink before noon? [95]

In Poland there are times when a nalewka or other strong drink is served at a festive company breakfast

There are certainly no such times in my extended family, nor in any of my friends families. Drinking before noon is what one did as a student, and certainly never at festive gatherings.

I really do question what kind of company you keep if they think that nalewka/spirits in general are acceptable before noon.

Google KPP. Case rests.

No, Polonius - we're asking for a single reliable source to the following three claims - for the 28th time

I don't want to google anything - I'm asking you for a reliable source to these statements.

If you can't provide a source, we can just assume that you're lying.

Before the war the grandparents of the GW clique were agents of a foreign power

Hey, Harry - another unsourced claim!

Could you provide us with a single reliable source as to this claim, as well as the following two claims made previously?

what is behind that unusual concentration of people of non-Polish ancestry in a single newsroom and Agora boardroom?

That is only a partial list becuase many others are in denilal and hding behind good Polish-sounding names

27 and counting.

What did you do to oppose, Polonius? Did you spend a considerable amount of time in prison, like Adam Michnik did?

Law / Bank Charges for incoming funds [4]

Good Point, though I find it hard to believe PKO would offer a half decent exchange rate

How much money are you looking at transferring? The magic point is normally 20k EUR to get a very very good rate (within 1gr to the interbank rate)

I got your message -

Yes, you'll be able to negotiate with the bank on that kind of exchange. If they say "no', just threaten to take the money elsewhere - they certainly won't want that kind of cash slipping through their hands.

Law / Bank Charges for incoming funds [4]

I'm looking to purchase PLN in the UK then transfer them by swift to my PKO BP current account. Am I right in thinking this bank will charge for incoming funds?

Wouldn't it just be easier to open a GBP account in Poland, then just transfer GBP to GBP that way, then convert within the bank?

News / Exorcist monthly goes on sale in Poland [17]

I hope so too - it is simply utterly and completely contradictory to Catholicism to believe in that stuff. I would go so far as saying that it transcends educational levels - it's certainly not the poor in villages that are paying for expensive phone calls into those programmes about this stuff!

I'm surprised that there aren't more warnings in churches about this stuff - it's an issue that they should perhaps take more seriously.

You either feel it or you don't.

Most of us don't rely on "feelings", but rather cold facts. We're not children.

Since you don't seem to catch on to things too readily, let me give you a łopatologiczny 'for instance'.

But I would never deny their Polishness, as much as it might be alien to me. I might think they're crazy, that they have no clue, that they should go drown themselves, whatever - but they are still Polish.

News / Exorcist monthly goes on sale in Poland [17]

Catholic journalist Grzegorz Gorny told Polish Radio that not very many people are aware of the dangers that may lie behind the various kinds of therapy or relaxation methods that swamp the market today.

Actually...

It is rather amusing when you hear people say "oh, I'm Catholic", then they go on to believe in fortune tellers, black magic, etc. One cannot possibly be a Catholic and believe in this stuff without - well -committing some pretty major sins.

I did read one woman online who was breaking eggs over her baby's head to protect him - then she went on to talk about going to church.

Travel / How to get from Warsaw to Belarus (ex-Polish areas)? [5]

Easiest way is train to Terespol on the border, change there for the twice-daily train to Brest (across the border) - then go to, for instance, Grodno (Hrodno in Belarusian).

The blood has to be pure...

Which is a bit of a problem considering the amount of Polish people that mixed with Germans, Czechs, Slovaks, Kashubs, Belarusians, Ukrainians, etc throughout the years. If one uses blood as a definition of Polish, then one must prove an unbroken link to the start of Poland.

Nope. Even for for the 13,456th time I'll tell you to do your own homework if this is so crucial an issue (obsession) for you. I couldn't care less!

Obviously you do care, otherwise you wouldn't make up such ridiculous lies.

Just wanted to see if others were aware of this fact. I need no proof, DNA or otherwise -- I KNOW.

That sounds to me as if there is no proof. It's a usual line by PiS supporters - they won't prove anything because THEY KNOW. Except most of us work to slightly higher standards than anonymous internet posts.

Anyone raised in a traditonal Polish setting would have sensed the alien vibes radiating from that company.

How could an American know what a traditional Polish family do, given the vast difference between Polonia and Poles?

but every real Pole or Polonian would.

Please define a "real" Pole? Is it one who has had traitorous scum for a father?

Life / Why are Poles in other countries called "Plastic Poles"? [168]

you can be Polish and pay taxes in another country, still being patriotic. I am not talking about tax avoiding while living in Poland.

Oh, we're talking about different things.

PiS voters are notorious for claiming to be patriotic, while doing all sorts of unpatriotic things.

DNA doesn't lie! If this is such a big deal for you (as it apparently is since you've been belabouring the point after most everyone else has lost interest,), then drop round the GW office and get a few hairs or flakes of skin for a DNA test. Then compare the results to the prevailing Polish halpogroup. That’s all there’s to it!

You're the one that made the following two claims, which for the 26th time on this thread, we're asking you to provide a single reliable source.

what is behind that unusual concentration of people of non-Polish ancestry in a single newsroom and Agora boardroom?

I notice he's avoiding the very muddy area of Gazeta Polska's financial backing.

Of course he's avoiding it, because it isn't publicly available information ;)

indeed the editor of Gazeta Polska not long ago refused to name certain of his backers.

Now why would he do that, unless the money was coming from certain Nazi circles?

And the reason that he cannot give a source is very simply because he was telling a racist lie.

Could it be pure jealousy on his part?

History / Janusz Korczak Year in Poland - a genuine Polish hero versus the namiotists [20]

It's very sad that a thread about Dr Korczak, a true hero and one if the greatest Poles of the Twentieth Century who gave his life to stay with the children in his charge (and he was a remarkable guy anyway, even before the war) should be hijacked by extreme right wing individuals who would denigrate his achievements and bravery, people who are the very opposite of all he stood for.

When they achieve a 10% of what Korczak did, then they can talk.

debatable!

Not debatable. He wouldn't get a whole year named after him with a multitude of organised events if it wasn't every bit as good as he was.

He was even greater than A S Milne, in my book.

UK, Ireland / Poles becoming British subjects [39]

Secondly as she has worked and paid taxes in the UK it would also mean that the "stamps" she has recieved would then be counted towards any state pension rights that she might have in the future.

Pensions in the UK are regardless of nationality, just like in Poland.

Through their NI payments they are paying for the benefits which unless they become a citizen they can not take advantage off..The problem is most people who came over are still young and do not think about it when in fact they are probably throwing away free pensions when they retire. Yes I know there is a cost associated but I would say the benefits out way the costs

It doesn't work like that. If you've accured pension rights in the UK, you're entitled to it regardless of your citizenship. The same goes for benefits - the UK system works on residency, not on citizenship.

Language / The most effective methods to learn the Polish language? [56]

I take it you were allowed to ask your teacher in English for explanations?

Of course, though sadly, much of the class was done in English anyway.

In my school, I'm debating the possibilities of banning the use of Polish in foreign language classes. Haven't made up my mind, partially because I use it occasionally too. But we're dealing with kids, so - different!

History / Janusz Korczak Year in Poland - a genuine Polish hero versus the namiotists [20]

Janusz Korczak, a genuine Polish hero

Korczak is - to say the least - one of the greatest heroes in Polish history.

Btw they were distributing free copies of gazeta polska

These guys distributing it are great fun, they routinely abuse people who don't take copies in Poznan. Their leader is a particularly nasty gentleman who doesn't take too well to being laughed at during one of his regular protests.

Language / The most effective methods to learn the Polish language? [56]

Whats the point of using a textbook to learn Polish, written in Polish, when a beginner wouldn't be able to read it?

My school textbooks for French were always written solely in French... quite common, I think?

(and - in my job - one of my requirements for textbooks for my MFL department is that they're written solely in the foreign language)
