USA, Canada / Moved back from Canada to Poland:). Here are the reasons why. [868]

languages changes

I am sure it happens all over the world. The newest word (well, maybe not so new) is

MASAKRA
Masakra this and masakra that.
"No mowie Ci, to byla masakra" . " No cos Ty, to przeciez masakra". No zobacz, ona wyglada masakrycznie". And on and on.

When something negative happens, it is MASAKRA.

eg.

the weather: masakra
the winter: masakra
the exam: masakra
the driver: masakra.
It seems that this word can be used anywhere and could be related to anything.

I hear that it is being replaced with another one, a bit less tragic.

Anyways, I have to finish the loundry, otherwise I would end up wearing dirty clothes to work and that would be MASAKRA:)

Travel / PKP (Polish National Railway) is a turn off [47]

I don't get this. In my experience customer service in general leaves a lot to be desired in Poland but people just seem to take it - do they?

I do, I even used to complain to the local newspaper, which resulted in a couple of articles sometime ago. One regarded ZUS, another one MZK. After a while I got bored and tired, so do many people.

One case regarded local public transport and I had to go the the headquarters to point out the offender. The MZK boss told me that the next time I have a problem I should complain directly to him, to which I said: where is the hotline on trams and busses to do that. That was years ago and the tram driver showed me a finger when I asked him if he was going straight or turning left to "zajezdnia".

If I was paying good money for public transport in Ireland (which I don't usually) and one of the staff was "mouthy", it certainly wouldn't be the end of it.

Basically I'd do my best to ensure that they lose their job and depending exactly how "mouthy" or insulting they were, may meet up with them outside of their work, down some alley and really upset them.

I am not going to beat some driver in the alley lol.

PS> I have already had a couple exchanges with the service people since my arrival, but it gets really bothersome after a while. Also, I have already been called a "trouble maker", so I am happy to listen to other people complaining in the Post Office and that happens on regular basis:)

Travel / PKP (Polish National Railway) is a turn off [47]

Let me put it this way: the last time I thought of taking a train in the UK it would have cost me twelve times more than a journey in Poland of a similar distance. The journey in Poland would have been on a nice new train if I'd gone Inter Regio (I missed that train and so spent an extra 20zl going first class on TLK) but in the UK I would have been standing in the aisle of an old piece of ****.

It seems that British trains are bad, but what does it have to do with the Polish rail discussion.

It is, as it has been established hit or miss with TLK and the only option is to take IC, which does not travel on all routes, so I am still stuck with dirty, late, lousy service on my route, which costs me 60 PLN per weekend. My problem is that I never know what I find:

- dirty washroom (I don't use those washrooms anymore)
- pushy passenger (well - they were too many thus far)
- mouthy PKP service (one is enough)
-rude teenager with his/her mobile phone ringing in my ears (they seem to multiply)
- slippery sidewalk on train station (the winter is NOT over yet)
- smelly of urine underground walkway (has been like that for years, not it is getting worse due to the fact that the washrooms on the stations are often out of service, or simply closed)

I am trying really hard to find something positive, but I have not been successful.

Well, it is still NOT as pricey as the rest of the European countries, but I bet it will be soon, with the same service - a big TURN OFF.

I just hope to warn other visitors who are planning to visit Poland to take another alternative while travelling, so they can actually have some found memories;)

Are you serious?

yes, I am.

You've clearly have never been on a British train!

I have not.

Przewozy Regionalne Sp. z o.o.

then I use that I believe: TLK.

But which service are you using?

Przewozy Regionalne are nothing to do with the PKP Group anymore, for instance.

przewozy or former PKP still sucks.

The Intercity trains are alright, the ones with the power outlets.

I cannot use Intercity since it does not offer services on the route I use most often.

Travel / PKP (Polish National Railway) is a turn off [47]

As I have mentioned in the past, I have been using the PKP services quite often and I would never recommend it to anyone, unless they haven't got other choice.

- expansive
- bad service
- dirty
- uncomfortable

I hate PKP.

It is amazing that they spend so much money on PR and so little on actually improving the services - a total management failure.

You still have a "barking" woman selling you a ticket. Customer service at its best.

Please don't tell me to buy a car, that is not the issue here and a topic for anther thread.

Life / The rising costs of food and fuel in Poland and the effects on disposable income/economy [177]

Commodity prices will continue to rise everywhere as people start catching on to how messed up Government spending and borrowing actually is.

there are a lot of people in Poland who are already aware of this, especially those who run their own companies. The problem is that those who are not aware usually are those who benefit from working for the government, EU found distribution centers- as I call them. There is tons of people who are still wasting public money in Poland and from what I have observed, the group is not decreasing in numbers.

I am wondering what is gonna happen once the EU funds dries up. It is not enough to patch the years of neglect of the infrastructures.

The present flood is one of the examples. It is only going to get worse, not that I am pessimistic.

I was away for over 5 years and overall, there hasn't been that much improvement in the infrastructure, I only see some cosmetic jobs done, at least in Sz-n.

I don't know how it is in other parts of Poland, but just using PKP as a reference point, I cannot see any serious improvements in Poland happening soon.

of course the gas prices are too high and Poland is expansive.

I am surprised that those who live here (Poland) don't see it.

On top of that if I drove a car to work, I would be always late trying to look for a parking spot down town - it is quite painful at the moment and it not going to improve since every Pole thinks that riving a car is a sing of his status.

That is why Poles drive on expensive gas, not to mention the fact that public transport is not sufficient in most cities. City planning is going down hill in Polish cities as well.

Absolutely off topic Kostik's remarks having one purpose only:
to improve the fading image of the wannabe superpower Matushka !

Come off it - you're lying, you know your lying, everyone else knows you're lying and your attempt to wriggle out of it failed miserably. We can only assume that any other 'facts' you post are of the same dubious value.

Torq lying- nah;)

However, he gets easily offended.

On topic.

Gazeta Wyborcza is used as a punching bag by some and I think it is very childish since the readers , such as me are not going to give it up, since it is an awesome paper.

And the phrase moherowe berety is little more than that. Hate and disdain? Hardly.

it was an observation, perhaps a simplification of a certain attitude. Berety is a their trade mark. What worries me is the fact that the owners of moherowe berety group was lately joined by another group whose trademark is not the beret, but the nasty attitude , plus the lack of ability to negotiate anything. It is a group of people who have some ambition, but no tools to negotiate, with no ability to see ahead and most of all without the ability to accept the reality.

USA, Canada / Moving back to Poland after 7 years in Canada [22]

I agree with Ashley. This way you would have a chance to see if there are possibilities for you job wise and otherwise. Nobody can make that decision for you. I have moved back 3 months ago, but it took me a long time to make that decision and I traveled in the summer for 4 weeks in order to do a research on the job market and that is how I got my job. People who hire in Poland want to see your face besides your CV - that is the way it works here and once you see your future employer in real life you can make a decision if you want to work for them too. It works both ways.

Ashley is right. I would draw pros and cons if I were you. This decision has to me both, rational and emotional and you have a lot to think about. If you return to Poland you will find a different country that you left behind and it depends on you how you deal with that.

Expect less and you will be fine.

Wait for Aphro... another poster here who did something similar.

Yes, you can check my thread on the whole returning issue from my point of view. I know at least 2 other Canadians who moved back a year ago. They are somewhat unhappy since Poland is very different, but they spent most of their lives in Canada, so you will probably have less time adjusting should you decide to move.

As for the location: if you are interested in fairly good money, then larger cities will be your target, which you probably know.

Another idea is to look for Canadian companies operating in Poland and make a connection with them.

I hope the Polish Government is now also aware of the problem of the decreasing Polish population. In addition, lots of people emigrated and are still emigrating away from Poland. Therefore, I ask: who will work for the retirement plans of the Polish citizens in future?

The government does not seem to care about that so much and I just posted an article on that in my thread from today's Rzeczpospolita.

Are there any incentive programs for people how emigrated to bring them back to Poland?
not that I know of.

Your best bet is to arrange some interviews and come to Poland for a couple of weeks. Be aware that some employers would want you to work asap. Be prepared that you need to think on your foot in Poland since planning is not the strongest point of Polish people, unlike Canadians or any other well developed country.

Prepare yourself for being disappointed many times once the novelty wears off:).

I personally achieved everything within the first couple of weeks, but moves (as you might know it are stressful.

https://polishforums.com/usa-canada/poland-moved-back-reasons-46727/14/

In general you have to be much more aggressive/assertive then in the PC Canada, since this attitude would not get me anywhere here.

Poles don't keep their word, so prepare yourself for that too - that is of course in comparison to the Canadian behaviour.

USA, Canada / Moved back from Canada to Poland:). Here are the reasons why. [868]

Be careful out there. We have devastating floods... wanna swap?

you too, no, I prefer ice, although there is a possibility of floods if the temps remain close to zero.

It all makes us tougher.

I guess so:)

Polish tendencies.

It appears that many young professionals are living larger and medium Polish cities to resettle in Warszawa, Tri_City, Wroclaw and Poznan. Since I returned to Szczecin I keep hearing the the city if getting older and less attractive to young and not so young graduates. At first I didn't pay that much attention to it, but after reading this morning RZ article, I am beginning to wonder if I made a good decision by moving to Sz-n. The city offers less then it did years ago, the wages are frozen at the moment and I keep hearing that many of my students are planing to move out and make their home elsewhere.

here is the article for the Polish readers:

Ten most desirable professions today in Poland are: civil engineers ( can rely on earnings to 15 thousand . Zł per month) , site managers (up to 20 thousand . Zł ) , machine builders (up to 16 thousand . Zł ) , experts from advertising and online sales ( to 6 thousand . zł ) , moderators of online discussion (up to 10 thousand . zł ) , programmers (up to 12 thousand . zł ) , the IT staff (up to 6 thousand . zł ) , construction workers with vocational education (up to 6 thousand . zł ) , cashiers (up to 3 thousand . zł ) , accountants and financiers (up to 10 thousand . zł ) .

Only during the first two days of January to the base Pracuj.pl - the largest job portal in Poland - received more than 1,600 listings , by 50 percent . more than a year ago. A similar dynamic record all the major recruitment agencies . The recovery in the labor market is confirmed by research conducted by Millward Brown SMG / KRC . 14 percent . of more than 500 surveyed companies adopt more employees than last year and half wants to maintain employment at the level of 2010 .

just an update on what is happening in the job market.
\whether that is true, time will tell.

lets hope that Fuzzy has left for the US and Darius is burried in snow, so I can calmly continue my my thread without silly interruptions;)

Polish trains

If one has been following the news, then one knows that recently Polish PKP (especially during the X-mas time) has proven to be an organization that has a lot to desire. In the past and in other countries I had never given so much though to travelling on the train. In seems to be different in Poland:

- the trains are often not up to the standards, they are dirty, the famous washrooms are not really suitable to be used - lack of toilet paper, dirty floors, doors don't close etc. I don't remember the last time I used toilet on the train for those reasons alone.

People on the train are often rude:
-the young guy told me not to sit in their compartment, although there was room
- another young guy called me names after I had an argument with his girlfriend who apparently was holding a sit for him
- last weekend I was travelling again and it was time to check the tickets, the PKP guy walked in and after realizing that the young girl has an expired PKP ID - started yelling at her. I told him to stop and he withdrew, so the girl - who was so scared and upset got away with the whole thing. All was good until the passenger in my compartment told me that I was making too much out of the whole thing. I told him off to and decided to buy a car asap. I have had enough of the Polish PKP.

I think some Polish people, especially the young ones are really rude.

Mobile phones are often used on the train and I would understand if they were used purposely - most often though young people - students phone their friends to chat, because they are bored - then I have to listen to their live stories etc and I am not able to read.

Did I tell you that I spent some time in Canada and I have never encounter so much rudeness as I did over the years I spent there as I did on one train ride on Polish PKP.

So if you are looking for a peaceful ride on PKP - you might not be lucky most of the time.

Ah, bring your own toilet paper too, some water and earplugs.

how would you know if your reading comprehension is close to zero?;P

And who disagree must be either intolerant, xenophobic, homophobic, islamophobic, anti-Semite, racist, or bigoted.

I have never said that, or have I ? It should be: disagrees;P

By definition, opposition to GW or their Utopian plans is only because of some primitive character defect and never because of any substance.

what definition, whose definition? There is no definition.

GW is spreading hate, general disdain and contempt for anything local. it stems out of their concentrating on whatever is 'modern, international, progressive', and results in calling half the nation 'mohair berets'

much less then you spread hate against your host country- the UK in your blog.

Back on topic.

GW is one of the best papers in Poland.

I have not said a word about Dziennik - I read it too - I read what I can and draw my own conclusions.

The truth is that all newspapers lose readers, and all radio and television stations lose listeners and viewers thanks to the internet, and those dropping numbers can also be accredited to the dwindling birth-rates of the last few decades, which is now only beginning to make a noticable difference. So I think it's pretty realistic to expect more numbers to drop in the not-so-distant future.

that is more like it.

Oh dear - but it is precisely the fault of 20 years of hate speech against their own country. 20 years of belittling everything apart from carpaccio with goat cheese, because that alone is foreign enough.

I am not sure what you are referring too.

apro is not polish, she is Ukrainian, from Poland, so, she agrees with all GW has been spreading, good for her Ukrainian complexes!

true, but I am really tired of people trying to dictate what I should read. During the communist times people read what was available.
Today there is freedom of speech in Poland and I am tired of other people telling me what I am based on what I read.

I was sarcastic. I am a reader and I can read whatever I want. So can you:).

If anyone wants to blame GW for all the bad things happening in Poland, they I suggest they grow up and look around. What is happening in Poland in a direct result of what Polish people want and can cope with. I have had enough on Poles complaining that outside sources are responsible for what is happening to the country.

They were both great men - brave, wise and patriotic, so I would be grateful if a lowlife
that you are, refrained from talking about them in a disrespective manner.

and what is the problem I ask?

GW still has one of the best written articles. I am an avid reader online and of the paper version.

I left Poland 8 year ago and I remember that it was a free country in regards to freedom of reading. Now I hear that my neighbour harasses my elderly father because he reads GW - that is a shame since he was there when her husband tried to kill her (true story).

It is interesting how some people have seen life and still don't understand what goes around them.

To make to story short: all those who think that they can stop people from reading what they want to read: fek off. It ain't gonna happen!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am still waiting for the OP to show what is wrong with GW.
