USA, Canada / Polish-American Hollywood Celebrities Press Release [36]

Perhaps you should think about also looking for English-American celebrities to do likewise? After all, Merian C. Cooper was English-American.

Plent of them here -

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Americans_of_English_descent#Notable_descendants_of_Mayflower_passengers

None of them will mistake the word for "grandmother", too.

Life / Fake goods in Poland [42]

My husband has said to his father- what the hell, you are not a burak- how has this happened to you?

Unbelievable, isn't it?

Thankfully, I'd never fall for this sort of thing because I have no idea about such goods ;)

You're the journalist, why don't you investigate?

that JK, as shown above, could conceivably himself be a Soviet plant?

It is not entirely beyond the realms of possibility - his brother was imprisoned and then released very quickly after all. And his father was a loyal Party man who must have had some connections in Moscow, so - well - would it really be inconceivable that JK was blackmailed into operating as a spy?

But the process of doing away with them would most certainly be highly damaging for Poland

True, mass murder is never particularly good for international relations regardless of how much it improves your country in the long run.

It is strange how the IPN appear to have not even a single piece of paper about Kaczynski the elder being a collaborator or about Kaczynski the younger's sexuality, isn't it?

It is very strange, isn't it? You would think that his homosexuality would have been remarked upon, particularly as potential blackmail material against his brother's opposition activities.

History / Welcome to Lemmingrad! [59]

Who said I wasn't at the march. I had a good view of it from the kerb and saw a placard that aptly said: 'PO złodzieje!

Except it wasn't democracy in action. Democracy means voting in representatives to represent you - not attempting a show of force on the streets. Putting people on the streets was what Hitler did to intimidate people.

And you weren't at it because you spent the whole afternoon posting on here.

As for linking TV Trwam to Westerplatte - how dare they. These people wouldn't know a fight for freedom if it slapped them around the face. I'm sure most of them were exactly the type that the Communists loved - passive, accepting and obedient. They only discovered their voice when the hard work was done and the battle for freedom won.

Love / Why don't Polish women treat education seriously for themselves? [130]

Given the relatively low wages and increasing cost of living, i think it is, also there is still some stigma to being single.

It really isn't.

As for stigma - perhaps in small villages, but no-one cares in bigger towns/cities.

I disagree, there is not enough emphasis on understanding concepts in Poland, not really enough in England either

Well, the two are about the same in my experience. The system in Poland has changed dramatically in a few years - ask Pawian, I'm sure he would never dream of 'rote learning' in his classroom!

That's great, I suspect you may mix with women in the field of education. I stand corrected if I am wrong!

Not really, most of my friends are either working in business related stuff or in something that requires certification (such as physiotherapy). But even the ones working in education are still bettering themselves - I'm teaching two of them very advanced Business English right now so they can complete an MBA.

Unfortunately, it's a problem in the UK and other countries too !

Pretty much - it's what happens when you over prescribe something. The new Scottish Curriculum for Excellence will be an interesting experiment - it returns much of the power to teachers.

Kaczynski pere was a commie

He wasn't just a commie, he was the worst kind of Communist - a Stalinist betrayer.

The PC types have got their pet fringe minorities, but you'll never hear them say a word in defence of the 160,000 Christians killed each year precisely because they are Christiasn.

160,000 killed every year only for being Christian? Source, please.

And that is their idea of balance, impartiality, fairness and justice!

Your paranoia is endlessly amusing.

Perhaps Poland would be a better place if we murdered 160,000 Radio Maryja listeners every year. Then again, we'd probably run out of people to murder after the first year.

UK, Ireland / Learning English but after reading comments in DM I feel it's no use [59]

Learning sophisticated words is useful when going abroad and expecting chatting with locals at advance level or to read fine literature.

In some respects, but don't forget that the English speaking natives will use such words freely and won't care less if the foreigners don't understand ;)

Having said that, the average DM reader is unlikely to use such words too :D

I think we know far more about the 'truth' in Poland than someone who spends his days creating endless new topics on PF. You claim to be in Warsaw, yet you didn't even bother to go out to observe the march first-hand on Saturday. That, for me - speaks wonders about you.

Incidentally, I don't recall reading homosexual hating, feminist loathing, TV Trwam loving articles in the paper that you mention. Perhaps you'd like to link us to some?

They are also considered to be failures if they don't have a man, possibly because it is often an economic necessity in Poland.

It's no more a necessity in Poland than it is in the UK.

The Polish education system is based mainly on 'rote learning' which doesn't really inspire deep thinking or understanding or even that much real interest.

No, it's not. Bad university lecturers might teach like that, but the Polish school system is very similar to the English system these days - even more so now that GCSE's are being replaced. The education in the first three years is far superior to the English system.

All in all, there are plenty of Polish females with degrees but few are actively encouraged have a real love of knowledge or to carry on learning after their 'certified education' is complete, which is why they may give the impression of not taking education seriously.

Where on earth did you get that impression from? Among my female friends that work, I can't think of one of them who isn't actively developing herself in some way. I know several who are studying a 2nd/3rd foreign language, some who are still studying part time for the love of learning, others who learn for their own interest and more.

All of what you say sounds more like the UK to me...

So hateful that I'd rather would not risk a visit to Great Britain ever.

You should. The type of people writing this rubbish are the same types who were on the streets of Warsaw on Saturday - intolerant idiots who have no place in the real world.

learning English after I had achieved the communicative level, if I'm not going to visit any English speaking country. Isn't it a waste of time?

No - think about if you attend international conferences and the like? The language of communication is pretty much English these days in Europe, and you never know what might come up in discussion.

I must admit - Poles in the UK, even the ones drinking Tyskie in the streets are 99.9% no problems at all.

UK, Ireland / Should UK Poles be forced to attend English language courses? [10]

Forced no! They shouldn't be allowed to work in this country without basic English in the first place.

Imagine the uproar if Brits were expected to learn a language to a basic level before working in a foreign country?

News / Piotr Glinski - PIS candidate for PM of Poland [9]

(including 110% of the expat vote?)

Not quite, there are some deluded people who think that PiS stand for good. Usually they're the ones who think that England has been ruined by immigration/etc.

Anyway, this guy has no chance of success. He's a nobody, no-one's ever heard of him before and he certainly is just a puppet for them to use and abuse like normal. I was expecting someone with...well, a bit more experience than a sociologist!

Now people are saying that Warsaw's name has been changed to Lemmingrad.

"people are saying" - you mean a tiny fringe minority of people who live on the internet instead of actually going to work or living their lives.

Anyway, they can say what they want, you and your sickening friends are getting nowhere near power. It doesn't belong to you and you're simply - not getting it.

News / Poland Parliamentary elections 2015 [1060]

Strzyga,Technically,if every citizen in the U.S. voted for a candidate, but said candidate didn't get enough electoral votes then he would lose.

I think quite a few states now have laws against this - they are bound to vote for the candidate that they are supposed to represent.

Never quite understood why it is mostly 'winner take all' though - wouldn't a good, simple reform be to allocate electoral college votes according to the percentage of the vote earnt?

News / Poland Parliamentary elections 2015 [1060]

Depends. Right now, the opposition seems to be permanently campaigning (they're full of nonsense about "we will win" and so on). But in an ordinary election, you could expect it to start around 2 months away. Certainly nothing like the long drawn out race that is the American presidency or congress!

His new reform proposals can be read on hoardings now:

And they are achievable.

Economically, Palikot is the most pro-business of the lot of them.

News / A new AWS (Poland Solidarity Movement)? [54]

the only way for PiS to defeat PO is to get non-political experts to prepare a good plan of badly needed reforms and move more to the center. If they keep concentrating on Rydzyk, Tusk will win 3rd time

They absolutely have to move away from that hard left socialist platform that they've adopted in recent years. It's scaring voters, people can see that Kaczynski's economic proposals are all about spend, spend, spend - and Polish voters aren't going to vote for it. They need to keep the Catholic identity while becoming social democratic - and most of all, they need to repeatedly focus on where the Government is failing (in particular, with education and health). But they also need to moderate the Catholic stuff - instead of embracing Rydzyk and the like, they need to embrace religious freedom for all.

That's how to win the next election - they will lose 5% of the vote to Solidarna Polska, but they'll be in a position to finally hurt PO electorally too. I've said it countless times - a party based on (good) Catholic values without preaching, combined with centre-left economics would win a lot of support in Poland.

But Kaczynski would have to give up power. And - he won't. The man is obsessed with the stuff, and he wants to right the alleged wrongs that he's suffered.

As it is, he's just a destructive force, luring those who might create an intelligent and competent opposition to PO and then throwing them to extreme populist positions.

He is an incredibly destructive force. He's ruined PiS as an electoral force and all but guaranteed that the other parties will work to keep them out of positions of power, such as what happened in the last Sejmik elections. The way that he deals with dissent (by expelling them from the party) also doesn't help - he's created an atmosphere of blind obedience within PiS - and it's not working. They already lost one of the most talented politicians in Ziobro - who - despite the mockery, is a very politically savvy character. His proposals for media relations with Solidarna Polska were absolutely excellent.

I only wonder how long it will take PiS to eliminate him from the party.

I could vote for a right-centered, business-oriented party and it could do a hell of a lot of good to PO too if they had to compete with another competent force.

At least some of Ruch Palikota's support came from people like me - people who like their proposals economically and believe in taking a knife to much of the regulations. I know some small business owners who are very much behind RP - because their ideas to lower the taxation burden on small businesses are incredibly attractive.

PO could only benefit from having to take the opposition seriously - as it stands, all they have to do is not alienate their voters and they've secured re-election. There's no real credible threat to their 40%.

News / A new AWS (Poland Solidarity Movement)? [54]

Does anyone else get the impression that Polonius and his type are doing a wonderful job of keeping PiS in opposition forever?

Remember people, the "decent, wholesome right" is led by a known homosexual who had a treasonous, traitorous father who betrayed his allies in the AK for the sake of a good few paydays in Communist Poland. If that's "decent and wholesome", well!

Why isn't Jaroslaw Kaczynski married with children like a good Catholic, Polonius?

When he starts living a "wholesome family life", then you can criticise others for making the same choices as he made.

Under duress, threat or various forms of blackmail you can get ordinary people to do most anything to protect their families and survive.

Making excuses for the traitor, are we?

The fact that he was trusted enough to install things in the American Embassy tells us all we need to know about what kind of man he was.

BTW what career, according to you, did Rajmund achieve in communist Poland?

The worst kind, one obtained in collaboration with the authorities.

who killed and tortured patriotic Poles. Just an engineeer. No big deal!

Just an engineer who was trusted to work on the American embassy. "Just". hahaha.

Oh Polonius, we all know that he was a filthy disgraceful traitor, you don't have to defend him :)

Polonius, nothing you say will change the fact that Kaczynski's father was a rotten, treasonous fellow who betayed his fellow men for the sake of a nice career in the PRL.

After all, Michnik is not trying to become Prime Minister, is he?
