Love / Why don't Polish women treat education seriously for themselves? [130]

"Because of spamming issues you are not allowed to post the term: "J/ews". This rule is applied to all Guests and registered members who have posted less than 2 useful messages."

Would be better to restrict it to everyone, I'm sick to death of the topic.

News / PiS-PSL-LPR? [23]

Quite the contrary is true, rural folk are amongg the coutnry's most traditonalist and staunchly Catholic.

But they aren't PSL voters, they're PiS voters. The PSL power base comes from the urbanised areas in mostly rural environments - and these voters are very much middle class voters who don't want anything to do with LPR types. Look at where the PSL won seats - all in towns surrounded by rural areas.

The fact that PSL teamed up with the ex-commies and now with the liberals shows they will join any coalition just to have a foothold in power.

They're centrist, but that by nature stops them from going near PiS.

I presume Kaczyński didn't even bother to invite them because of their PRL roots

Or because it wouldn't have been a viable coalition, particularly as they still would have been 17 seats short of a majority.

History / Poland-Lithuania would we be better off together? [16]

It would have been even better if Poland had created a federation wtih Lithuania, Ukraine and Belarus as Piłsudski had wanted, effectiwely restoring the Rzplita Obojga Narodów.

It would have been, but alas, there were too many nationalistic elements within Poland to ever make it work.

They could've certainly started by granting Galicia the promised autonomy...

News / 1.3% birth rate = Poland's slow death [221]

but people were so underpaid in PRL and CCCP that one pay packet was not enough to even get by.

Oh dear Polonius... your history knowledge is lacking, yet again.

Wages were never much of an issue in those times - it was the access to goods that was the problem.

News / PiS-PSL-LPR? [23]

Had he chosen PSL (and the power-hungry Pawlak would have surely accepted the invite), it might have been a different ballgame.

Pawlak would never have accepted. The PSL vote comes from middle class rural voters - who would not want to go into any coalition with LPR types.

But Polonius, your knowledge of Polish politics is lacking, yet again. To obtain a parliamentary majority in Poland, one must obtain 231 seats out of 460. PiS-LPR-PSL would have a grand total of 214 seats and would have left them 17 short of a majority.

Life / Polish vs British vs American - Clash of cultures [390]

oh hell yeh Berlin, they didn't even understand my marvellous German at the ticket office there when I was attempting to buy a ticket to Kustrin

I had this problem too!

I was trying to buy a ticket to Kostrzyn, and the woman just wouldn't accept it as a place. I had no idea of the German name, but even on the timetables, it says Kostrzyn rather than Kustrin. And really - is the pronouncation that different between Kostrzyn and Kustrin?

Life / Polish vs British vs American - Clash of cultures [390]

When *everyone* speaks English why is it a *must* for an English person to bother with a second language if they dont want to?

Provocative ;)

Everyone doesn't speak English - I got quite a shock in Berlin after realising that many people working in customer-facing positions didn't speak a word of English - especially young people.

Is it possible to be English, yet not British?

Easily. They're undergoing somewhat of a national awakening at the minute. And me - I'm Scottish, I resent any use of the word "British" to describe me.

Wouldn't surprise me if in years to come, we see the situation where some people in Northern Ireland describe themselves as British, yet Britain doesn't exist. People still describe themselves as Yugoslavian in some Balkan states, after all - particularly those of mixed marriages and Muslims who live outside Bosnia.

Now now. We all know about how the Polish-Americans claim 4th, 5th and even 6th generations back as proof that they're Polish, so we're quite within our rights to call him an English-American accordingly.

He wasn't British, however.

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

Countries with very interlined economies - such as Poland and Germany - have very good reason to share a currency. The periphery such as Greece, Ireland, Spain and Italy should not be in the Euro.

It's not such a bad idea for Ireland - they would have to peg to something, and the alternative (the Pound) was never really in their favour. At least with the Euro, they could act as the European headquarters for businesses and do all their accounting in the same currency as they sell in.

But yes, Greece and Spain certainly should never have been in it. Italy was borderline, but given how useless the Lira was as a currency...

Personally I'd like to see the film being true to life.

I suppose that's the danger of Hollywood - although even the Polish film industry isn't immune to creative retellings of stories!

Still, I wonder why they're approaching Hollywood with all the alleged anti-Polish bias that it has when there are many other places that might be interested.

Just please, no Ben Affleck.

Delphiandomine, all moderators have the right to suspend any member, who won't comply with the forum rules after warnings are given. Please remember this.

Of course, but in this particular case - it was already dealt with (by you) - there was no need whatsoever for her to jump in here, especially as Des was getting ignored anyway.

Although I must admit - I am completely sick to death of seeing Des getting away with making repeated off-topic attacks on this forum on us.

Life / Is the 1st of November a work-free holiday in Poland? [12]

I know that there will be a long weekend from the 2nd of Nov on Friday, but howw about Thursday, will it be work and school?

1st is an official holiday, 2nd will be treated as an unofficial holiday. Which means, sadly, yet another long weekend of carnage on the roads and endless blithering idiots stopped for drink-driving outside graveyards.

(for me, thankfully, 2nd will be certainly a free day - and I'm staying at home well away from roads)

To ensure democratic rotation, the party that had won two consecutive ballots would nnt be allowed to field candidates for the third time. That would ensure a different politicla contesllation -- therefore porgresss, rotation and dynamismas oppsoed to beign in a rut.

I've heard crazy ideas, but yours is definitely the most insane one yet.

Is there no end to the crazy suggestions that the desperate opposition will come up with?

What was the nick of the guy who claimed to be adults film producer or something? EM_Wave? I have a hunch that Physicist is the same guy.

More than likely.

He certainly was dumped by a Polish girl at some point, such is his obsession.

pgtx - stay out of it. Vincent has already dealt with it and made an agreement with us - should myself or Harry reply to Des (or provoke him in any way) - then it's a long suspension. Des is also under the same agreement - he cannot reply to or provoke us in any way. You have absolutely no need to get involved here, nor were you party to the agreement between ourselves and Vincent. In fact, you weren't even a moderator at the time. Thanks :)

Law / Starting a seasonal work agency in Tricity.... [15]

Isn't it more like EUR 60 per month for the first two years and then EUR 200 per month after that?

Quite a bit more these days - closer to 100 Euro a month for the first two years, then just under 250 Euro after that. A total and utter disincentive for small businesses.

As with the president, perhaps the ruling party should also be limtied to two consecutive terms in office. That way, Poland wouldn't be saddled with w third-term Tusk clique.

Clutching at straws now, Polonius?

The 70% would still refuse to vote for Kaczynski and PiS, no matter what artificial limits you placed upon them.

Or do you mean that after two terms only the 30% will be allowed to vote?

That would be ideal for them. Of course, the rules would change after the election of the 30% to remove the limits for them and them only.

You will need to register it as a recruitment agency.

I could be wrong - but - I think it's a registered profession in Poland.

In France it's the same thing you must pay social insurance and taxes every month the rates in Poland are much more reasonable :)

Is 250 euro a month + 19% tax really reasonable by French standards?

Personally, I'd hope for the ability to vote wherever you like - all it would take would be the use of a computer to register the PESEL number of the voter and the number of their identity document. You have to show ID when voting anyway, so it wouldn't be a hardship to maintain a list of who exactly has voted so far that day.

PiS would, of course, oppose it on the grounds of it being too democratic for their liking.

This kind of action gives a warm feeling - that the 70% knew what to do.

Sanity prevailed for another 4 years and Poland was safe.

Although that does assume that both the hero's ethnicity and reasons for helping Poland remain unchanged in the film, which is a far from safe bet.

I wonder - should Poland's Jewish minority feature in the film, will the usual suspects embrace or reject it as a consequence?

The Foundation's mission is to produce a major Hollywood Movie illuminating Cooper and the Heroes of the Kosciuszko Squadron to America and the world.

Wouldn't it be better to focus on real issues rather than pointless glorification of an English-American?

History / Welcome to Lemmingrad! [59]

If anything, it very well suits PiS supporters: they know what they think is the right direction and they will continue to go in that direction no matter what and they will not listen to any views other than ones from fellow PiSites about what to do. Which is why they will never again be involved in government.

If anything, they've gone so far that they won't even consider alternative views other than the currently accepted orthodoxy. Even the loss of Ziobro did nothing to dampen their faith in the Dear Leader!

But again - the circumstances of 2005 cannot repeat themselves - not even the most dodgy right or left wing leader would consider coalition with the mentally unstable Kaczynski these days, particularly after how he dealt with Lepper.

c) That was before the electorate knew what PiS would be like. Now they do.

PiS before the 2005 election were much much more moderate than now. If you go back and read the news articles from then, you can see that they were expected to go into coalition with PO, such was their moderation. Unthinkable these days.

PiS would need to get at least 45% of the vote to form a government (as they cannot form a coalition). They won't get more than 30%, probably less as they'll lose voters to SP.

It would be a remarkable achievement, especially considering that the polls are against them.

It's more likely that PO will win a majority outright than PiS winning, to be honest.

Talk for yourself, but the majority of Poles voted for this government.

You can claim to talk for around 3 million Poles. That's a long way from 38 million.

Indeed. They have a cause to support which is stable and strong, yet that cause has no chance of ever taking power.

Win-win situation for everyone - we know exactly who the loonies are, but they can't win power.

As for the OP, instead of focusing only on Polish-American celebrities, why not contact some English-American celebrities?

Indeed, they're bound to be far more receptive to such a thing than Polish-Americans will be towards a random guy from the past.

Poeple I interviewed during and after the march.

So people associated with a fringe movement (let's be realistic - 50,000 people is very much fringe) then.

Because anyone who thinks PO shouldn't run this country CAN vote for someone else.

The problem is that they think 70% of the population is retarded and not real because they vote for someone else.

And with such arrogance, they stay very much in opposition. Forever.
