Law / Retirement laws in Poland [11]

65 seems to be the norm, although 67 is not unusual.
What I wonder about, is why the retirement age for women is earlier, if they live longer?

Love / Prevention of child abduction by Polish mother. [232]

you have to stop dreaming, Anglik, and get realistic here. She does not want you, does not need you, and if your presence is more of a pain than anything else, you're not going to 'win'.

I don't want to comment on the legal side of things, because I don't know anything about it, just remember a lawyer will always tell you to go the legal way because that's his job.

Send her a check, put the baby's name in the "for" section and see if she cashes it. But no demands with it, no expectations attached.

If she cashes it, start sending them regularly. That is a good start.

make the check substantial, so there is a better chance of her cashing it. Child support of about 1/4 of your take home pay is not unusual.

When you ask to see your child and her response is 'what's it worth in terms of money?'

That's fvcked up, but also, that was your door! What did you say?

the worst scenario is that you might loose contact with your child for a while. Find somebody that can be a conduit between you two, even if it's just to pass a Christmas or birthday present, whatever it takes. Send money if she'll take it. Keep a journal with your child's name on it, keep record of all your efforts. Write in it, if you can't talk/write to him/her directly. Life has many twists and turns, and if you don't give up and are not a threat to your ex, she might turn to you if she's in need. If she does not, a time will probably come when the child will come looking for you.

Sometimes, there is not much you can do, but stay calm and non-judgmental. You might consider swallowing your pride and start kissing her ass. At the very least she should know that if she ever needs it, you will be willing to help, no strings attached.

Thank you. But you have to remember, telling this to your mate is a waste of time. You can only change yourself. When you read it, skip the parts that apply to her, and concentrate on the ones that may apply to you.

so many people forget what parenthood really means: putting your own 'wants' in the second place, behind the child's.
Routinely, women forget that the child is not their property, men forget how important their presence is in the child's life.
Once you have a child, it doesn't matter what you want, everything becomes about the child: where you live, what jobs you can have, what you eat, what time you wake up and go to sleep, what you watch on the TV, what music you listen to, who you let into your house, who you have to be nice to, what plans you make for a weekend... all your plans are not your own any more. Forget what you want.

If you do right by your child, you will have no regrets. Remember, for the rest of your life, you will not have peace if your child does not have it.

There is no set formula, if you picked a lunatic for your mate, it's not the child's fault. Make sure that the child knows it has two parents that love him/her, because sooner or later the child will realize he/she is a genetic combination of two parents, and the questions will start. Nobody can tell you what to do, just make sure your conscience is clean, and your sacrifice apparent.

Edit: Apparent is a wrong word. I can't think of another one. Hope you all know what I mean.

Genealogy / Being ashamed of Polish ancestry? [156]

Who are your countrymen? I know several American friends

We do like to veer off point here, don't we.... We're talking about being ashamed of Polish ancestry and I gave an example of one time when I was. What does this have to do with Americans? Or Irish, for that matter? (oh, and I meant a bottle per person ;) )

The fact that you find a Pole who'se finally flown away into that grand sleep of blessed holy oblivion in which one has abandoned all cares

OK, that is funny! However, our innate ability to hold our liquor cannot compete with someone's inability to stop. The only time I was ever ashamed of my countrymen was in a bar in New Britain, Connecticut. I didn't know it was a custom there to drink a bottle of vodka BEFORE you go out.

Genealogy / Being ashamed of Polish ancestry? [156]

F-Stop I think your selective pride is rather uptight and afflicted with the unfortunate over-valorization of science that is so common amongst Americans in this day and age. That inebriated Pole could be a great artist, and even if he isn't, why not be proud of his prowess as a tippler?

oh for Jah's sake Des, talk about uptight - since when we are supposed to be proud of our shortcomings?
Over-valorization? LOL That tells me you feel inadequate about science, and think that science and art are mutually exclusive.

Being ashamed of Polish ancestry??
It strictly depends how my "Polish ancestry" is behaving at the time. At a scientific symposium, for example - very proud. Spotting one passed out it his own pee - not so much.

UK, Ireland / Are Polish people importing a new wave of ancient racism into the UK? [402]

F-Stop if your links were intended to make a case for those figurines being an example of this thread's titular "ancient racism" then you posted the wrong ones.

the links were in reply to somebody that accused me of manufacturing the dolls myself, then taking a picture so I can post it here. That idiotic accusation got booted, but the reply stayed.

Those sculptures are not intended to offend anyone. They have generally friendly face and the money attribute is to bring wealth and luck. It's a popular folk art motive (not only in carving but in painting too).

That, I can actually believe! Thank you!

UK, Ireland / Are Polish people importing a new wave of ancient racism into the UK? [402]

Here, for lazy Bieganski and the like:
"TF: Poland is beautiful, but I also have to say that I saw a wood carving of a Jew holding money.
"What is this?" I asked a Pole, who told me matter-of-factly, "Oh, the Jews are good with money."
I said, "In my country, that's called racial profiling." The Pole said to me, "Why? We'd put an Arab next to an oil well."

So this is their "compliment" to the Jews."

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

Avalon, I think that's an old video, at least 4 years. Soto del Henares is making progress, albeit slowly. A hospital has already been built.

They've learned their lesson and are not pushing it on foreign speculators any more, but cater it to local population by providing more job opportunities.

you are uncomfortable giving an answer

that's a laugh! You're the one squirming all about because of that picture. For all I know, it's a good luck charm, but stereotype it surely is!

As to what and where, do a google search on Jewish dolls holding bags of money or something, it will be faster than your silly plot to "corner me"..

Also, when you bring a point, it would be wise to at least have an example in mind, otherwise you might look foolish.

Do you really believe that all of Poland holds such stereotypes of Jews?

that's a stupid question. There is nothing that "all of Poland" does. But these dolls are fairly common there, and I don't think they would have much of a market in many other countries.

Do you believe that Jews also hold stereotypes and prejudices against non-Jews including Poles?

I'd need some examples to give an opinion on that.

Life / In case you didn't hate Polish drivers yet.... [15]

The fact that there are two cameras rolling, audio set up so their voices are heard when they were outside, makes me think it was a set-up too. Hope they got the tickets, not the bus driver.

News / American soldiers beat up in Torun, Łódź [141]

Men get in fights all the time, why is this such big news?

I'm not saying it's big news at all, but once I hear it, I like to picture in my mind what happened, and this one does not make much sense.

What does makes sense to me, and what probably happened was that this was not much of a fight and media is blowing this up for some reason.

That bothers me. Either the other 3 did not even know what was happening, they did not think it was serious, though their buddies deserved and ass kicking, or were so outnumbered, they "surrendered" without a fight. Or, as thug said, they were scared.. or simply did not want to fight. Which one?

News / Are Poles good enough for USA (to go there without a visa)? [288]

The Polish government has to change things via the official channels,

Oh, yea. Polish government has to be told of an exact number of soldiers it will have to send to the middle east to make that deal.

there were 5 American GIs in that bar? And 3 did nothing while their buddies were getting their asses kicked? Is that right? (help me here, I have no patience to read through 5 pages of bickering to see if this issue was already raised).
