Love / All Polish women can't be nutters can they? [257]

Sorry, her words, how polish are 'honest' therefore not thinking of others' feelings when saying or doing some things. Its made me feel bad from 2 people now. Maybe just me, i should see it as honesty

I don't know if you understood what I wrote. Even if you find a few Poles that are idiots, all Poles aren't.

its ok in the Polish mindset to treat people badly

Stop those generalizations. How many Polish people do you know? There are as*holes in all countries.

Language / doing / making - the difference? [20]

i am having the same kind of confusion with był and its participles for 'was' & 'were'.some come out as byłiśćie and others come out as byłyśmy, what are the rules for this use.i undertsand the various gender participles, but when this happens it makes me question myself.

You need to look at a conjugation table. There you have all the forms.

Buy Colloquial Polish by Mazur, it's the best book for learning Polish. And buy 301 Polish Verbs by Janecki. That's all you need.

Then you will understand 80% of the questions you ask here.

Love / Can't get over "the Polish experience" [21]

Plus old loves are really really tempting.

Yes, they can be.. hehe.

and you don't use it because of an "angry lady".

Maybe she's nicer now... or she's dead.

If you call, ask first; czy twoja (szalona) babcia żyje?

If you want to try to find her again and talk to her, or not, is only your decision.

There are pros and cons with everything. But I guess it's tempting.

Love / Polish boyfriend coming to visit [52]

Reality is more complicated than this.

The "love" you can buy is not real love, and should be called something else. You must understand that.

There is only 1 way that can lead to success:

Judge by the situation what you should do when you meet him.

Travel / Is it safe to travel to Poland? [194]

Warsaw

Some parts of Praga (which were once called "the Bermuda Triangle" with the highest crime rate in Warsaw). Recently I've heard that some new clubs etc. have been installed here, and have become very popular. But be careful.

Krakow

Nowa Huta is the classic place most people in Poland know about.

One should watch out for criminal gangs that think these places are theirneighborhood.

News / Freezing weather in Poland, 42 people dead in winter freeze... and no-one cares? [140]

Most shelters are full in the winter, so many homeless people must stay on the streets even if they don't want to. It's a shame that there is not enough places even for those who are not very drunk and behave well.

The first step should be to help them break their addiction, this is the key to everything. If they don't want this, there is not much we can do.

All people who really want to start a new life should get that help. Also society will save a lot of money if they help these people.

Love / Opinion from Polish men on this please (Polish men so 'spiritually' romantic?) [43]

It kind of sounds like German which I am familiar with. Then again, it also sounds like Russian. Could I literally translate English to Polish or is there specificity on Nouns, etc.? Is conjugation of Verbs complicated like French or Spanish?

It doesn't sound like German.

And Polish grammar is much more difficult than French or Spanish.
It's probably one of the 5 grammatically most difficult languages in the world.

Language / Usage rules of ł in the Polish language [30]

In Polish all sounds in a word are usually pronounced. And all letters/combinations are pronounced the same in all words.

Of course, all rules have rare exceptions. But the rules and structures of pronunciation are much easier than in English.

Language / Why in the world there are three ways to write simple U ?!?! [54]

In the beginning (when you learn a new language) a lot of sounds seem to be the same.

The only way to differentiate them is to get experience. After some time you are surprised that you once thought they sounded the same.

Love / Can't get over "the Polish experience" [21]

Just wanted to share my experience here and, hopefully get some feedback. I just thought (and still think) she was the greatest girl I'd ever met. However, I was really disappointed at how she handled it. Also, I've read a couple other threads here and couldn't help but to noticed some kind of trend.

I think this is pretty common in all countries. Many people have a love from their past they will always remember in a special way.

And many love stories involving people far away from each other end in the same way as yours. Unfortunately.

Thanks for sharing your story.

Language / Polish nouns of unpredictable gender [50]

There isn't a huge number of "strange-gender-nouns" that are useful in everyday-life for someone learning Polish. I would say < 20.

Life / Winter in Poland? [160]

The temperature in Poland change very much during the winter. The same week you can have days with 0, -10 and -20 C degrees.

The winters are usually warmer in south western Poland than in north eastern, esp. in the beginning and end of the winter.

Language / Bookstore in Warsaw - Polish in 4 weeks LEVEL 2 [19]

I would like to buy this book.

Do you know any bookstore in Warsaw that have a lot of "language books"? Where I can be able to find this one.

And does anyone have this book (or level 1) on their computer? I would like to check a few things before I buy it.

Thanks in advance! :)

Life / Do expats living in Poland speak Polish? [233]

In my experience the majority of foreign people who live and work in Poland won't even try to learn Polish.

I can't even understand how anyone can live several years in a foreign country, and not even try to learn more than 10 words.

They are denying themselves a normal life.

Travel / Ski and Snowboard - Poland 09/10 season (updated: 10/11 season) [84]

I am right footed, which foot ought to go first on a snowboard?

Most people prefer to put the left foot in the front.

It's rather painful to learn snowboarding, and then you can't sit down for a day.

But my recommendation is to exercise the muscles of the lower part of the leg (Gastrocnemius etc) before going. You will thank me.

Enjoy!
