Travel / Weekend in Katowice [25]

I see a lot of tourists in Krakow being driven around in electric carts as they listen to tape recording of the history of such and such who was born in such and such

Yiiiikes!! those are the kind of thing that I try to avoid, wherever I am.

Yes, I went, i just waited for a mate to come over, did i not tell you??
We had a great time, we did the "luxury communist tour", I even find the name hilarious.
I would recommend it to everyone, I think these guys are very clever, turning communism on it's head and making a bob.
Well worth the ride

Excellent - good to hear that it's still a good one. The guy that drove us around seemed like a genuinely nice guy.

So have you been on it yet? I remember that you said that you were going.

Handbrake-turns in a trabi LOL!!

Seriously, the steel-works were impressive. The tour is also quite sociable, so not really for people who keep themselves to themselves. Mr LC and me being driven around Nowa Huta by a very knowledgeable young chap who knew his history. We stopped off at various interesting points, including a cafe, where he showed us photos from the communist era and talked about his own experiences of family life in the 80s.

Excellent value for money - well worth doing of an afternoon.

***edited to add - I don't work for them LOL!***

A very interesting tour in Katowice is the crazy communist tours, it's good for a laugh.
URL

Seconded - I've done the Nowa Huta one in Krakow.

I recommend going to Kracow main market square, there are trams running there all the time, although you'd wanna check out when the last one is.

I also echo that - go have a few meters of beer in CK Brouwar ;)

Life / "Londynczycy" - new Polish soap [62]

Episode 1: drug dealer, slut, drunk construction worker.

Hmmm...so, how does this go down in Poland?

Honestly, I think that my life and that of close friends in my neighbourhood would make a far more interesting Polish-British soap opera....

Ahahaha... I'm glad that there's a thread about this. I'm just back from Poland, and saw loads of posters for this TV show. Tell me more about it...

Life / Polish clothing - Polish folk costumes [28]

Also, I found the modernized national costumes 'The voice of the people' by Malgorzata Magiera during the Krakow Fashion Awards display in Krakow,

This sounds interesting... do you have a link?

Re national costume, I've visited Poland many times, and the only people that I've seen wearing national costume are the characters on a bottle of Zywiec :)

Life / COMBATING "POLACK" JOKES [460]

Why combat "Polack" jokes? These are just jokes.

Exactly... and anyone who tells these kind of jokes just show themselves up to be a knob. There's no need to combat them or prepare any (not particularly in the cases above) come-backs.

Feedback / The image of Poland according to PolishForums [90]

I seems this forum paints a fairly broad picture of Poland, the good, the bad, the ugly, the beautiful.

That pretty much sums it up for me.

Does the absence of those people mean a "new era on PF"?

Not at all... just been out of town.... just going through threads from the past few days.

Nice work, by the way M :))

Life / What is the reason for POLISH jokes ? [486]

yep, I agree with you there london chick.

It's kind of like the goofy kid in the playground who's got "sticks and stones..." loaded and ready if you see what I mean.

I've been the subject of loads of jokes over the years... being female, Scottish and <pulls a look of disgust> GINGER, but my best advice is to just laugh along with it.

The jokes and banter are all part of colleagues and mates feeling comfortable with you :)

For those of you who are the recipient of Polak jokes. Do this next time...

Sorry, but I still think that this is a bit of a naff put-down.

beckyinjozefow

Hmm... I don't know if that would really be a catty put-down. I speak five languages, though not Polish (YET ha, ha) and really am not dumb.

Then again, I would not be telling anti Polish jokes in the first place, of course :)

Speak or not to speak#2

Ah yes, I forgot about this one. I'd have posted my own sweet voice, but I couldn't figure out how to record a mp3 file in the first place. You'll just have to use your imagination....

Language / I'm gonna learn Polish in a month! [86]

Good luck, Mask!!

Sorry to crash your thread, but I am seriously thinking of taking up Polish in Autumn. I'm being realistic, and just want to make a bit of an effort for my Polish friends and business contacts.

This is going to seem like a daft question, but how do you actually "learn" a language. By the time I was 20, I was fluent in a couple of languages, but don't really recall actively learning them - does that make sense? I just feel like I've always been able to speak French for instance (even though I didn't start learning until I was 11).

Now that I'm a bit older (I'll be 33 next week... woooo hoooo!!), it's going to be tougher.

Anyone got any tips and techniques for learning Polish?

I did dip my toe in Russian when I was 18, but gave up as I found it too complicated. But then again, I don't know if I really took it seriously and put the effort in at 18.

UK, Ireland / A collection of noimmigration's threads or "STAY AWAY from BRITAIN" [978]

noimmigration:
dentists lists etc would be shorter

Considering most of the dentists where I live are Polish, the waiting list would actually get longer

Exactly.

The main reason that there are long waiting lists for NHS dentists is fact that dentists make more money from private practice than doing NHS work.

Most Poles that I know in the UK head back to Poland for their dental treatment. As do many Brits - they get a better deal in Poland than they do at a private clinic in the UK.

Sympathies Szarlotka - Its only fair to tell you that I am the one who your wife has not been cheating on.

Hmmm... the plot thickens.

Szarlotka, I think that it is only fair to tell you that not only has your wife not been cheating on you with skotja2007, but I too have not enjoyed a bit of a fling with her.

Food / What's your favorite Polish beer? [870]

Maybe there's a "lite" version?

Gutted that I'd not seen or heard of it since. Is it available across Poland? I'd somehow imagined it to be a Czech beer.

Food / What's your favorite Polish beer? [870]

Ah!!! is that a Polish beer?

I had it a while ago (a bar in Hoxton, if I remember rightly) and loved it - best of all, it was like 3% so great for a school night.

Then I never saw it again, so figured that I'd maybe imagined it.

Was going to hit the gym this evening, but seeing as you're at the bar....

Love / Is it possible for Filipino gay like me to have a Polish lover? [13]

Maybe more openly gay Poles. Now that they are less repressed.

Exactly - and good on them :))

Can you get a Polish visa for a same sex relationship?

Good point, although I read about some kind of visa scam in a gay magazine a few months ago. Don't know the tecnicalities of it though.
